DIABETIC CAT NEEDS FINANCIAL HELP WITH MEDICAL TESTS ETC

I am the owner of a 14 year old diabetic (he's been a diabetic for about 7 years) cat named Shiva. He means the world to me. Right now my little guy is very sick and I’m in the midst of a financial crisis and don’t have the money to get a blood panel and an x-ray to determine exactly what is wrong with him. He may need surgery on his foot, but without the tests we don’t know.

I’m very depressed and cry every night trying to face the possibility that he may die. It’s killing me that I can’t do more. At this point he has a foot injury that just won’t heal. The vet thinks he may have a bone infection. I’m also having a lot of problems with him bleeding. I have to keep his foot bandaged. We don’t know for sure why he’s having the blood issues. That’s why he needs the blood panel. He is currently on antibiotics prescribed by his vet.

Solicitations for funds are not allowed on FDMB without prior approval from Rebecca. This plea has not and will not be approved by me.

Removing your personal info is just part of the policy here, but you have given Shiva's website and that gives plenty of info, including vet contact info, should folks here wish to donate.

You are in WA state, and I am in DE. It's too early to call your vet to donate now, and I will be out all day today, but I plan to send a little something to Shiva's account at the vet's tomorrow. I hope Shiva is able to get the diagnostics he needs done.

Also, I see that he will need to be on antibiotics. Please keep in mind that Target, Walmart, and other pharmacies have $4 generic programs that include antibiotics. If one of the ABs that your vet wants to put Shiva on is on those lists, perhaps the vet will write you a script and let you get the med cheaper elsewhere.

Please do let us know how this goes. We will all be rooting for Shiva Dancing.

After you are through this emergency, perhaps you can come back and we can talk about Shiva's diabetes. Many of us know about long-term diabetics. My Ennis has been diabetic since 2006. And we understand about financial difficulties. I help to run a rescue called Diabetic Cats in Need that may be able to help with Shiva's diabetes treatment. See this post.
 
I see on Shiva's site your insulin is $100 per bottle...is that right.

What insulin are you on.

If Lantus or Levemir, you can get the cartridges instead of the vial and it is
cheaper over the long run. You open one cartridge at a time instead of the
entire vial and you lose less to 'spoilage'....the insulin pooping out.
 
Thank you so much for your reply and your help.... and yes, of course I would be glad to talk about Shiva's diabetes when this is all settled. I've learned alot along the way and had only one major crisis. The more we share our stories the more we can help our cats.

Do you know about the Vaculance? It's a product made by Bayer for children. It works great a kitty ears.


All I can say is I love my Shiva Dancing so very very much.

He's on the new PZI insulin. I priced the others and in this area the prices are within 10-15 dollars of the PZI. Also his vet doesn't think Shiva would do as well on them.

Are you using the the vaculance? I can't picture how I would work that on Tucker's ear. It creates a vacuum and pulls the blood up, right? I just switched to the One Touch Delica lancet device. It's very smooth and has a fine tip that's easier on Tucker's ear.

Do you hometest?

Oh...that would be Prozinc, then ?

Have you tried calling around to different vets for different prices? Aberdeen is a long drive from Seattle, but you might be able to find a cheaper vet office in Olympia, Tacoma, or if you can make it this far, Seattle. I would try calling different vet offices and see what they charge. They will all be different. Also, ask if they would do payments. It's rare, but some do take payments!


I don't think I can help with money right now. We have a pretty large bill we are paying off at our vet right now. If I can manage it though, I will send something.

Thank you for all the sugestions, addresses, support and help. Shiva's vet will be calling me soon and we're going to discuss his tests and x-ray. I expect they'll squeeze him in early next week. The sooner we find out whats wrong with his blood and if he has a bone infection we can start getting him healthy enough to be able to handle whatever treatments his foot needs. Right now he would probably bleed to death if he had surgery.

Has anyone had any diabetic related blood issues? The vet thought it was a clotting issue, but I've seen plenty of clotting when I clean his foot... just sometimes I'll take off his bandage and he'll just start bleeding. I don't think he's anemic... I will be soooooooooooooooooooooooooo glad to be able to get that panel!

Shiva just wants the #$@# bandage off his foot!!!!!! He REALLY hates it!
 
Wouldn't it be better if she contacted a group like Diabetic Cats in Need and then people can donate via the group? There is a similiar case of a cat named Simon and it was done this way. That way there is some accountability and if the group is nonprofit the donations are tax deductable.
