Diabetes seems to be out of control

Hello,

I was here about 18 months ago, when Irie was first diagnosed with diabetes. for the first year, he appeared to respond well to the Lantis. In fact, we thought he was going into remission....he was down to 0.5 units twice a day.

Suddently, in February he started to exhibit all the symptoms of being out of control. We weren't doing blood checks just the monthly blood check at the vet. Sure enough, his BGC was over 500. We have steadily raise his insulin up to 3.5 units twice daily and he is showing no improvement. He is still loosing weight and drinking excessively.

Our vet even had us buy new insulin, thinking that our vial was too old. We have checked our injection technique and that's okay. She is suggesting we switch insulin.

We have done a 12 hour blucose curve a month ago and are about to do another one. Quitely frankly, I'm concerned.

Hi Catherine,
it sounds as if you are trying to control Irie's dire beasties without testing her bg's everyday at home.
if this is the case you are, i am sorry to say, never going to 'control' her dire beasties.
as a matter of fact, and i think you know this if you have posted here at all, you stand a better chance of harming poor Irie than controlling her.
would you be interested at all in the very empowering and exciting prospect of testing her bg's everyday, yourself, before each shot, during the day....and TRULY get a perspective of what control really is?

I'm with Lori on this one. It may seem difficult, but home testing becomes second nature and gives you a true picture of what is going on with Irie. One curve at a stressful vet office every once in a while doesn't begin to tell the whole story. Also, many cats require much more insulin for several different reasons, so it COULD be that Irie just needs more insulin. BUT you cannot be sure of that without home testing. You are at risk of overdosing your cat if you don't know how low she is actually going in the day. High numbers could result from a need for more insulin, or stress, or chronic rebound. You really should consider home testing her bgs.

I'm goinb to post in my original post of 18 months. Anyone reading that one will get all the history.

I didn't want to make this post very long, but I left out the fact that I am blind and cannot take his BG by myself and I do not have regular help.

I'm going to continue this thread in my original posting of January 2010.

I don't know how to tell you how to find that post.

Sorry,
Catherine (Irie's mom)

Dearest Catherine, I just did read your prior post.
Sorry I did not know the history....and bless you doing your best to treat dire beasties with limited to no eye sight....bless you! I did not even know how that would be possible.
Wish you were close enough that I could help in some way.

ohmygod_smile I didn't know your situation either. I sure hope we can find someone in your area to give you a hand and helP you figure it out and feel more comfortable with home testing. That's obviously the ideal way to go, cheaper than vet visits and less stress on Irie. Please forgive my insensitivity. ohmygod_smile

Hi Catherine, We have had a similar situation with our cat. Same numbers, and same time frame. LB was down to 0.5 lantus at xmas 2010 but by Feb 2011 his numbers started heading north and north and more north. LB is now on 4 units of Lantus twice daily. Another piece to the puzzle is that LB is given an injection of long acting antibiotics and this brings his numbers back to normal range again for several weeks.

We get days where he's quite low at +6 but by +12 his numbers have shot way up again. Or he can be high all day when he's needing another antibiotic injection. Vet doesn't seem to know why the antibiotics help him.

I will write to you privately but please know that regardless of testing this problem persists and seems to be cyclical. I suspect that LB has pancreatitis or an inflammatory condition. I have become discouraged and I don't test very often as I have no expectation of getting LB into remission. I want to provide quality of life on a day by day basis. Our vet said LB could go on years like this.

I am seeing a new vet tomorrow as we have to go away for four weeks and I've found a new cattery who has demanded their vet assess LB for suitability. The new vet is better qualified than my vet so am hoping to learn more about LB's condition. Maybe some it if will be helpful for your situation.
