Elliott Growltiger, the One-Eyed Wonder
Elliott+2.jpg

Elliott is a beautiful boy in shelter-sponsored foster care in Charlotte Mecklenburg, NC, that really deserves a furever home. As we all know, being one-eyed makes a cat a pirate, not a burden. It is amazing what the shelter has done to save Elliott. You can read more about him on his blog page here.

...I also want to remind folks about Isabell. Her shelter is not as kind to diabetic cats as is Elliott's shelter. She is at risk of euthanasia soon, but even more upsetting, she is not being treated by the shelter for her diabetes. We all know that a cat can decline to an ugly death without treatment.

Jacob (in foster with OLM Catnip Cottage in Summerville, SC)

I invite the foster beans of cats of the DCIN adoption list to post updates about their charges on this thread. You may see new threads during the week if cats are added to DCIN's adoption or courtesy post lists. (The courtesy post list is here.) You also may see the foster beans post about these cats on Health and the Insulin Support Groups.

Another miracle last week with Gail adopting Reagan, who was at risk of PTS. Thank you Gail for opening your home and heart to that old man. He needs alot of care, and certainly will get it from you.

Note: Last week's adoptable diabetic cats post.

I am glad they saved Elliot but I am so confused looking at the shelters web site.. its typical of an open admission govenment run shelter. The stats on euthanasia are huge for cats, but they save Elliot? Not that I am complaining but its just weird.

Well, it could be that many (most) of the cats turned in are feral. They are considered un-adoptable.
That is reflected in the statistics.

That's the way it is in Yuma...90% of cats turned in are PTS. Only the socialized ones are put
up for adoption.

We're working on it, though. Finally a TNR program has been started in Yuma.

It is so backwards there....most male dogs (pit bulls, largely) are not neutered...large
Mexican immigrant population. It's not 'macho' to neuter your dog.

True, they dont break it down.. very sad that theres no TNR programs if thats the case. Its still odd that they save half the dogs..but I see they have a lot of breed rescues listed that they work with. Even with feral cats its still awful stats.

I am spoiled by our numbers in SF.. always shocking to me when I see other stats.

aw, elliot is a doll! and not sure where to post this, so i'll do it here...

continuing thanks for getting binks started on the health path, venita. he is feeling much better and enjoying the heck out of all his new-found friends. so, to you and DCIN...the title from a song written by my brother's boss:

"I Couldn't have Done it Without You"

Thanks everyone for the views. Elliott's foster mom here. I'm sure that if Elliott had been in the shelter instead of foster care when his diabetes was discovered he would in fact have been euthanized. I was willing to continue to foster and so we are searching for his furrever home. Yes our shelter stats are tough to look at, I don't disagree. However, it is a function of capacity and still so many people who do not spay and neuter pets. It amazes me in this day and age that I still here things like "she should have a litter first before is she is spayed." Yikes!

The people at CharMeck AC&C do a great job for a municipal agency working on a municipal budget. They are compassionate and have developed a great foster program and relationships with many rescue organizations.

I hope we find this special fella a great home. Crossing my fingers that this Monday he will go off insulin completely and be able to managed strictly with diet.

Hi Angela,

Thanks for posting and thanks for being willing to continue Elliots care. I know that municipal shelters do the best they can with what they have, especially since, as you said, people are unwilling to care for their pets properly.

Congrats Isabelle! Enjoy your new furever parents.

I'm so glad someone stepped up and took you home, a pretty girl like you deserves the very best.

Mel
