I spoke with the specialist today about how Todd's appetite has been coming and going, and how it appears he is unable to take the Mirtazapine without throwing up. (See this post for more info: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27653 )

He suggested we could try Cyproheptadine once a day for a few days. He said I could start it tonight, but since it's so late, I think I should start in the morning. I was given ten 4mg tablets that have been broken in half. The directions he gave me say to give him 1/2 a tablet once a day for three days, and if there is no improvement, to give him 1/2 a tab every 12 hours.

I was told there are no side effects, so I shouldn't worry and he will be fine. I'm just curious if anyone else has used this and how it helped (or didn't help) your kitty.

Todd is in early stages of kidney disease and of course, is a Diabetic. He has lost 4lbs since July, so he is skin and bones. I don't want to push him too hard with meds. I will also be starting him on Sub-Q fluids tomorrow. 100ml every other day. His current mediction list is as follows:

Lantus 1.5 units twice a day
Tumil-K tablet one tablet a day, broken into two
Prednisolone 2mg once a day, for week, then 2mg every other day for a week and then he will be off it.
B-12 injection every Wed. morning

Thank you!!
Sarah

In some cats, it can have the same hyper effect that Mirtazipine can. Merlyn couldnt take much cypro, was better on mirtazipine. If you are worried, you could start with 1/4 tab first to see how he does.

cleo was fine on both cypro and mirtz. mirtz got her hungrier and was definitely an antidepressant, which helped a lot. some cat owners report extreme nervousness in kitties after mirtz dosing, tho. i haven't heard about as many such reactions to cypro.

I would start with 1/2 mg of the Cyproheptadine since, as other said, it makes some cats spacey. I have never had luck with Cyproheptadine.

Thanks folks! I took the 2mg tablet and cut it in half and gave that to him a little over an hour ago. I didn't want to over do it, in case he had a bad reaction to it. I also gave him 100ml of Sub-Q. Right now he is just sitting in front of the back window, soaking up some sun. I can't tell if he is feeling ok or not. I haven't seen any difference yet. I guess we'll just wait and see how he does.

My boy Do Lou takes 1/4 a pill as needed and has no problem but I have had some cats in the past that it made them vocal and kinda hyper so as always ECID

The only thing I have noticed after taking this med, is he has been rather.. tired all day. Not moving around a whole lot, and I don't see a difference in his appetite. Perhaps he needs a higher dose, I just don't know. He has a follow up appointment at 8am tomorrow with our regular vet, so I'm sure we will talk about this.

I actually think his insulin dose needs to be higher as well. I usually only check his BG in the evening, before his last shot. But the last few times I'v checked this week, it's been in the mid 300's, and one evening it was 292. The specialist did a fructosamine test almost two weeks ago. He told me that the numbers were in the 200's and he didn't feel the Lantus should be higher. But I really think it should. he gets 1.5 units. I think we should try 2 units. I'll post this in another thread, because I'm curious what others think.

Thank you!

I've had good luck with cypro in my foster cats & kittens. Sick & not eating.. cypro works a lot actually! It's the first med they try when kitties are losing weight.

As for the Tumil-K though.. are you giving a pill? Tablet? Cudldes was on a potassium supplement, but it was a powder that I'd mix into a little bit of baby food. She'd eat it like a treat! So it was her daily 'treat' that only she got. ;-)
