Constipation

Hi everyone,

I haven't been on here in a long time...again, but am going to update Corduroy's SS this week when I get some time (we always keep his numbers and shot times recorded on paper). His numbers have been kind of all over the place lately, with his nadir being at the end of the 12 hours, which is strange. We've still been giving him .50 though and he doesn't seem to go too low.

The main reason I'm posting though is because it seems that, no matter what I do, he's always constipated. I feel so bad for him! Actually, both of them don't seem to ever poop, but Corduroy is the one I see straining to go, and it's pretty much always not in the litter box. However, he very rarely produces a bowel movement. I gave them each an 1/8 teaspoon of Miralax per day with their morning meals a few weeks ago for a few days with no difference. I've constantly been giving them each a 1/2 teaspoon of olive oil per day (this has been ongoing for about two months now). As of February 16th, I started giving them each a 1/4 teaspoon of Miralax per day, but still no difference yet. And, like I said, although I don't see any poop in the litter boxes from either one of them, Corduroy is the one I see straining all of the time.

I started making raw food from Dr. Lisa Pierson's recipe about a month ago, and I even add way more water than it calls for. I know that with the raw food diet, I shouldn't expect to see as much poop from them, but it makes me worry when I see Corduroy straining to go and can't. BTW, for all other accounts, I feel like the raw food diet has been making them feel much better. Corduroy occasionally even does flips off the wall like he used to when he was a kitten!

Has anyone ever experience this pooping problem with their diabetic kitties, and if so, did you find a solution?

Thanks,

Brigitte

I've never experienced a problem like you have, but I have experienced diarrhea. I've used 100% psyllium, which is only fiber, and it comes in capsules that you can break apart, and mix into their food. I don't have any experience using Miralax, either. If it doesn't happen very soon, you may need to take him to the vet to have him checked out. There may be other issues going on there that may be potentially causing him to strain so much to go.

I would talk to your vet. At the very least, you'll be reassured that there's nothing wrong.

You could try adding some baby food squash which will add some fiber and see if that helps.

I agree with talking to the vet. Perhaps an ultra sound or x-ray to make sure there isn't some type of growth or blockage.
His anal glands could also be bothering him, very painful, which would lead to going outside the box too.

my vet suggested adding either oat bran or wheat bran to help punkin get regulated when he was having diarrhea. fiber helps both constipation and diarrhea. i bought some in bulk for pennies and added it to his food. lots of water, too, as you already know.

but i would also be concerned about him straining and not being able to go. i think i'd vote with the vet visit just to make sure all is as it should be.

Both my kitties are on raw food, and we usually see poops every other day. I do add lots of water to their raw food - adding warm water to warm it up a bit and I'm adding 1/2 tsp babyfood squash per meal for fiber. For a previous cat, vetty had suggested psyillium fiber. As the other said, the straining is a concern, especially as it's just the one cat.

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the responses. I appreciate your input! I'm going to call my vet today to get him in. The only thing is, the last time this was a problem, the vet took x-rays and everything and could find nothing, but I guess it's worth another shot. BJM, I actually read through that whole website you mentioned. Very interesting information there! Thanks for that! I may even go back to canned cat food actually because I'm afraid I'm not giving them enough of the supplements they need. I mean, I'm going strictly by Dr. Lisa Pierson's recipe, but who's to say that she is right?! Thinking about going back to M/D even though I've heard that it's not the best choice out there. It seems like the only one that helped him get his blood sugar regulated and didn't come along with all of these other problems. Not sure what to do, but I'll keep working on it.

This issue could definitely be in conjunction with his not sitting down issue. If he is arthritic (as my Mario was), it can cause constipation. Or, it could be the reverse - maybe the constipation is making it painful for him to sit. Either way, it does sound like a vetty visit is in order.
