constant yellow diarrhea & vomit for a long, long time

Hi All

I have written about Sampsons many issues often and now I am seeking help for what we have believed to irritable bowel disease. He has had constant bowel movements, often wet and yellow until I use the flagyl and budesonide. Usually the diarrhea passes but comes back in 3 to 5 days. I am not so sure this is IBD any longer. This has been going on for over a solid year and he is losing more and more weight. I had the vet recheck for thyroid issues but his T-4 came back at 2.4 which the grey zone for a cat his age. He is 17 years old.
He is a real fighter he eats really good but nearly every time he eats he has a large bowel movement. Either yellow diarrhea or if I treat with the flagyl really long poops.
I just don't know what to make of this. I read that the yellow vomit and diarrhea is indicative of an empty stomach. We are now trying the prozyme supplement to see if he can keep anything in his belly. He has lost so much weight and he is fighting to eat and get some nutrients.
Has anyone experienced anything like this and did you find out what was causing this?

Thanks so very much .

Off colored poo and constantly going poo is a big sign that they aren't processing their food correctly and it is just going out as soon as it comes in. Try that prozyme for a few days and see if things change.

Are you feeding grain free foods? Grains are usually a big trigger for kitties with IBD.

Hi,
My Sya has had the battle of the yellow poops as well. I've done 3 things that seem to have helped space the duration of attacks to many months apart, which is about the best I've been able to do. (our last one was 6months, so I figure that's pretty good)
1. She gets probiotics at each meal. My vet has given us one, but I've heard Fortiflora is good too.
2. I only feed her chicken or turkey cat food. I have found through trial and error that any other derivation of this always ends badly.
3. The vet has set up a standing order of short duration of metronidizole for her. We agreed on what I would see if I felt like she needed that, so I can just call in for it and dont' even need to bring her in to get it. Typically a 10 day dose of that puts her back in order again when things flare up. Apparently besides being an antibiotic it is known for its anti-inflammatory properties with kitties.

I know how frustrating it can be. Sya's numbers get wonky, she feels bad and her poops are so yucky. They can even get bloody if I don't catch it early enough. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about this problem. I hope the prozyme works. If not, consider a GI panel from Antech, about $160 with basic cultures. There is a follow on additional culture that can be done for another $150. This is what it took to diagnose a contagious diarrhea in my crew - all previous fecals and tests were clean. If it hadn't been contagious I guess we would have tried to treat for allergies, IBD, etc. It showed no sign of resolving on its own over a period of months while we went crazy trying to find out what it was. :(

You might also consider trying Diagel. Haven't used it yet but I have some coming to try to help some kittens who are post-coccidia but still having diarrhea. Also for Cole who has frequent diarrhea. No comparison to fortiflora... that has one gut bacteria where diagel has like 15 plus other stuff to help. I read a lot of vet testimonials that said it works great with only one dose. I don't think they can be on any antibiotic simultaneously though.

Hi Vicki.
I wonder if Sampson could be having the same problem as i recently had with Smokie.
I don't remember if you ever got x-rays done on Sampson.
Smokie had that bright tan diarrhea i mentioned before; and she had it several times a day for weeks and lost some weight.
The ER Vet said she had IBD or Colitis. He gave her Depo-Medrol because i couldn't get po medication down her. My Vet later gave me Baytril injections to give her.
Then one day Smokie had this hugh gush of grey liquid diarrhea stool instead of the bright tan diarrhea she had been having. In the middle of the liquid diarrhea were long clumps of something grey in color.
And in the middle of the clumps was odd looking black stuff that had the texture of jelly. After that the diarrhea stopped. No BM for 4 days. Then on
the 4th day she had her normal 6 inch bm and back to normal bm's every day since.
I am convinced that Smokie got ahold of something plastic and ate it. She goes wild over plastic bags and i always keep them away from her. But she chews on anything plastic she can get to. Something must have been hung up inside her and after it came out she was ok.
Neither Vet had wanted to do an x-ray on her. I think that may have shown up on the x-ray.

I don't know if Sampson could possibly have this type of problem as he has had the diarrhea for over a year.

I will NEVER EVER give Cortisone to Smokie again! It brought back her diabetes and she
was sick with that. It was a very stressful time and i would have never made it without
Ginger(Ginger and Calliope) She was there night and day for me and i just wouldn't have made it without her encouragement and support.

Vicki i just hope you can find out what is wrong with Sampson.
I know this is a difficult time for you. :YMHUG:

Yes I have had xrays done periodically and they show inflammation of the intestine. I just don't know if this is indicative of IBD. He is not vomiting any longer. I have given him the prozyme for 2 days, no yellow stool. However today I fed them fancy feast classic chicken and mixed in a little of chicken with gravy in it to give him some substance and he had a firm bowel movement but it was very large and long stool. He just can't seem to keep any food in his tummy.
I will speak to my vet with about all of your recommendations and see where we can go with this. It is such a mystery and my vet thinks we are missing something, but I think he is getting tired of me too.

Thanks for all of your input and keep it coming. We really appreciate it.

Hugs,

Vicki & Sampson

Best of luck. Please know it took several rounds in succession of metronidizole (flagyl) to get Sya to the point that she stopped having regular re-occurrences. I think it is kind of like a getting ahead of the inflammatory curve. I would definitely pay attention to exactly the type and flavor of food you are feeding and the response you get. I never thought I'd be so attentive to poops  The things we do for our fur babies.

Vicki, i was wondering if you have ever seen another Vet for a second opinion in trying to find out the cause of Sampson's diarrhea. I know he has so many problems that you are working on and don't know if this would be something you would be able to do.
Let us know how he is doing.
