We are on our 15th day without insulin. However we had 5 mornings of numbers higher than 120 although they did go down at pmps. So are we in remission ? Or does he still need insulin in the morning to help push down the numbers to green? Have not done shot below 130 before though.

That 130 is still a normal number, although at the higher end of the normal range. It may be that your kitty's body is just trying to find it's own balance. Some kitties naturally have higher BG's than others.

You may well find that the numbers creep down over time.
However, if they creep up, you may find that shooting a teensy tiny amount of insulin is helpful in inching the numbers down and securing a strong remission.

So...Jebat 'may' or 'may not' be in remission. Maybe wait another week and see what happens..?

I know the received wisdom here is that a cat is in remission if they go 14 days without insulin in normal numbers. But it doesn't always go quite that smoothly. 'Cats are cats' after all.... ;)

Incidentally, my own cat often goes 14 days at a time without insulin these days. But he never quite makes 'remission'. His is a rare case. though.....

Good luck!
And c'mon, Jebat!

Thanks Elizabeth! What I do notice is that his higher morning will happen if he eats a lot of wet food that night. But the pmps doesn't go beyond 120 cos I'm not home during the day to give him wet food and he will just graze on YA.

I'll change his food intake tonight and see if it helps. Whenever he sees me in the house, it triggers his brain to ask for wet food. Conditioning! Lol!

How are you and your fur babies, Waheeda? :bighug:
Hi Yong!
How are u? I see Maury doing really well these few days on Lantus. Looks like it's a better insulin for him.
Jebat is confusing me! 15 days without insulin and generally he stayed below 120 except for for a few occasions. This morning he gave a good number.
How do I tell if he's in remission? I've decided to limit his wet food to twice in the evening cos I noticed if he eats more often at night his amps will go higher than 120. Must he be in green for whole period to officially be in remission or as long as it's within 120?

We are in the same boat. Sparky is pretty constantly in the low to mid 100s. Technically not "normal" BG but, still low enough that 95% of the time we forego insulin. He's doing his own thing and we're just along for the ride! :)
Oh Sparky too! Guess I can't do anything much but go along with him. So far the highest he had been was 148 and it came down without any shot.

Considered in remission after 14 days with no insulin shots and as long as he's coming down on his own that means his pancreas is working :). He's going to naturally have food spikes but his own body will bring his BG back down.

Oh great! Most wonderful news ever! We wouldn't have done it without guidance and advice from you @Yong , @JanetNJ and @Kris & Teasel . Thank you so much!!!

I'll continue to take readings at amps and pmps for a week more. Just being "kiasu" - that's our local word of being overly cautious. Lol! Cos I read one kitty on this forum that was doing ok for 14 days and suddenly her bg creeps up on 15th day.

Ya it is! He's walking normally too except his tail is not straight up yet! Lol!
Oh that's fantastic!! Ya know at 13 he may have a bit of arthritis. If he remains stiff you can start giving him some cosequine. You just mix it in the food.

Ok will monitor. Would you happen to experience dry cough in your cats? We noticed once or twice before but today he had it thrice. We noticed that if we carry him and put him on another place, he will start to have the cough. Related to heart? Do you think he needs to see vet asap or can wait for his appt on Tuesday?

Is he having any trouble breathing? Like panting? Or cracking lungs, or sneezing or eye discharge?

What kind of litter do you use? Maybe he got some in his throat? Is it very dusty? If it's asthma or allergies you may want a litter with low dust.

No panting, sneezing, eye discharge etc. Using same litter except the new version is scented. Could that be it? Could it be due to dental issue? He's still making cracking sound when he eats. What's cracking lung? Is it safe to give subq ? Or should I skip today? We've been giving him for 17 straight days.

How much sub q do you give and what's his weight?

He's 10.6 pounds n we give 100ml. That should be the amount rite?
Yes... If he's not needing that much though you can reduce the amount. 100 is really the most you want to give. Does his chest or abdomen feel a little too squishy? Maybe just do 50ml for a few days.

We can see a bump after d subq. But it subsides after a while. I'm more worried if too much will affect the heart cos vet said he has a gallop rhythm. I think for my peace of mind I'll take him to the vet tmr morning just to check on the cough.
CC's bg is back to normal after dental? I'm thinking of going on a trip mid sept so am not sure if to do dental before or after the trip.

I have no experience but have read on here many times that you have to be very careful giving subQ fluids to a kitty with cardiac issues. I'd check that out with the vet for sure.

Strangely the vet knew he's on subq when she mentioned the gallop. Just told me to come back for a scan. I'll just reduce it then and confirm with her on Tuesday.

Yeah it took awhile.....her mouth was probably sore.... But it's been in normal range now thankfully.

If she still needs daily sub q's is easier on the heart to do two 50 ml than one big 100ml session.

And poke him twice? Sometimes he yelped. I feel so cruel. He's rather subdued these 2 days. Good appetite though. Could it be the high phosphorus? It was 7 a month ago. Does the binder bring down the number fast?

You can get smaller needles. What are you using now? Maybe for now then just reduce from 100 to 50-75. Not sure how fast the binder brings it down. Guess you'll find out that Tues.

18g needles. 1.2mm x 25mm. It's big but fluid moves very fast. Takes about 2 mins only for 100ml.
I'll skip tonight cos I worry he will start coughing if we handle him. Tmr morning we see the vet. I'm such a worry wort when it comes to my furbabies.
Last year was an ordeal with the other fella over his eye infection which lead to an eye graft. You can't imagine how stressful and scary it was.

Switch back to the unscented one and see if that corrects the issue. Easy fix ;). *paws crossed* for good Vet visit :bighug:
They don't do unscented ones anymore. :( Thanks Yong, hope vet can find the cause of the cough.

Do send prayers for Jebat. Hospitalised cos there's fluid in his lungs. And X-ray doesn't show a clear outline of his heart. He's giving the vet and nurses a hard time cos he's hissing and growling at everyone. Doing all the checks tmr when the internal medicine specialist works. His kidney test today showed slight improvement in crea, bun and p levels.

Fingers crossed that he improves. Sending healing energy your way. :bighug::bighug:

What brand of needles are you using?
Terumo Ultra Thin Wall are the best. Because of the thin wall, you can use a smaller needle and still get a pretty fast flow. You might want to try a 20g or a 22g (if you have a cooperative cat). I found 18g needles were very ouchy.

Oh congratulations on the remission :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Sending prayers and scritches for Jebats recovery and more hugs for you :bighug::bighug:

BD needles. From the vet. I think we only have BD brand here. I also think the 18g is too big. My boy will yelp each time I poke him. He doesn't like me lately. Hissed at me when he was at the hospital yesterday. My little lion is angry.

Well, my boy was just diagnosed with heart failure. No subQ at the moment. Taking diuretics to clear fluid in his lungs. Thanks for the link. If we need to start on subQ again, will look for the needles.
