Debbie rich

My patches has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and started Vetsulin. She was always with me following me room to room or just sitting with me while she napped. Now that she started insulin. She just wants to sit/sleep in our spare bedroom and look out the window. If she does go to other rooms she leaves if we are there. My husband does the injections I don't. It breaks my heart. Feel like I've lost my Patches. Anyone have this happen. Even when she was very sick she always wanted to be with me.

Hi Debbie,

Sorry to hear that Patches isn't quite feeling herself at the moment. How long has she been on Vetsulin? Is she lethargic at all - especially during mid-cycle? Does she hide, or does she by any chance try to avoid the Vetsulin injections? Also, does she seem to be more like herself when the insulin dose is wearing off (say, 9-12 hours after the previous injection)?

She started the insulin December 30th. She 17 almost 18 years old. She sleeps but I wouldn't say lethargic. She does not hide for the injections. I don't think she even knows.

My cat is the sand type to be always following me around and sleeps with me etc.when she got sick she started sleeping off by herself and not acting like herself anymore.took a couple months of insulin before she started acting like herself again and back to snuggling.whenever she gets sick then gets better she picks up a new thing to her personality.this time she walks around ( death) meowing with her toys in her mouth all the time.i call it death meowing cause it sounds so awful when she meows like that.deep horrible meow.im new here so can't offer much advice.she doesn't have anything else going on besides her diabetes?

Thanks for the reply, Debbie.

I have read reports here that some cats don't get on with certain insulins. Saoirse certainly had such a problem when she was on Caninsulin (UK brand name for Vetsulin), hence the nature of the questioning in my first post on this thread. Saoirse felt really cruddy on Caninsulin. Since I had never had a diabetic cat before I didn't know what her clinical signs were telling me. With Saoirse (14 at time of Dx) she would seem very depressed and she used to hide most of the day when she was receiving it. She would be brighter in the hour or so after the dose was given, and then again about 9-10 hours after the injection she'd perk up a bit. As I said to my vet at the time, it was like having two different cats.

Saoirse was switched to Lantus shortly after and the difference in her on the Lantus was like night and day. She was much more herself, the hiding behaviour diminished immediately and she returned to more normal levels of sociability.

Patches hasn't been on Vetsulin very long, and it can take a little while for a kitty's body to get used to having the insulin on board. I'd suggest keeping a journal of her behaviours and also to let your vet know about the behaviour change. Also, are you home testing yet? Sometimes big swings in blood glucose levels (can be a characteristic of how Vetsulin works), it can make some cats feel a bit crummy.

Critters mom Can insulin make a cat more sleepy?

I think it could very well do. Saoirse started back on Lantus recently, and since the restart I've noticed that she gets a bit drowsy shortly after her insulin injections and without fail she has quite a long sleep. She usually perks up again 90-120 minutes after injection time. It's a pronounced change in her behaviour compared to how she is when not receiving insulin.
