Cat Newly Diagnosed

My cat (Buddy) went to the emergency vet on Friday and was diagnosed with diabetes. His numbers are around 450-600 and he has been receiving Lantus since Friday night. His fructosamine was around 550, so guess he has had it for a while. I did not notice because in Spring he had high blood pressure out of now where he became blind. Since then he has not been as active because of his blindness, so I just thought his decreased activity had just caused some muscle wasting. On Friday, I noticed he was looking way too skinny and he was loosing clumps of hair, so I took him in the emergency vet. I am now very worried because his numbers are not getting any better and he has been on the insulin for 5 days.
I have another cat who was diabetic, it went away. Came back and went away again. She has always responded really well with insulin, so I don't know what is going on with my Buddy boy. Any advice that anyone can give to me, I am really worried about him.

For kitties with kidney disease and diabetes you want to be feeding low phosphorus foods and low carbs



. First number is carb percentage, second is mgs of phosphorus/100 cals, all less than 10% carb and less than 250 mg phos:

You want carbs under 10% and phosphorus ideally low 200's or less.

When you click on the item go all the way to the bottom left and click on detailed nutritional info



You want to look all the way at the bottom of the Weruva page where it says Minerals/100 kcal. The phos numbers need to be below 250. . Either that, or the Dry Matter needs to be less than 1%. Look at the carbs ( as fed section) and make sure you try and stay around 5% or less
 
Lantus is a long-acting, gentle insulin that doesn't "crush" numbers. In fact, it takes roughly 5 - 7 days for the insulin to form a "depot" and actually begin to work. It's just 5 days so I wouldn't be overly concerned. It's also possible that your cat will need more than the dose you started out on. Getting a spreadsheet set up will help you keep track of your cat's progress and will help us to offer suggestions.

Is your cat prescribed any medication for the hypertension? If Buddy is prescribed any medications, it would be helpful if you could include that information in your signature, as well.
 
Thanks for the advice and food recommendations. I have yet to do a glucose curve on him, the vet said to do it 7-10 days after the visit. So I think I will do it on Saturday and then figure out how to do a spreadsheet for him. So far his numbers are still high (He had one reading yesterday morning that was 390 but besides that they have been upper 500's and sometimes lower 600's before his insulin) and he is not eating any of his regular foods, which are fancy feast pates. He will only eat baby food right now and I am even giving him cerenia, so I am very concerned. Also his bp med is amlodipine, I will add it to my signature. Any foods that your kittys just cant resist??? I do not want him on the baby food for too long because I know he isn't getting the nutrients that cat's need.
 
I suspect the loss of appetite is due to the BP meds. One of the common side effects of amlodipine is loss of appetite. I linked info on amlodipine. My cat was very food motivated and lost all interest in food when prescribed amlodipine. The vet ended up switching her to telmisartan.
