Hi
I'm new here, and I just tried to post and I am not sure where my post went.

Our kitty, Samson (Sammy) was diagnosed 2 weeks ago. Put on Lantus incilin at 3 units and the DM Canned food. Things were going fine the first week, then Sammy had an episode and went into convolutions, it was horrible. We had to race him to the emergency clinic, then the next day to our vet. He almost died. They told us that he was probably in remission. We stopped giving him any insilin because even at 1 unit he had a severe reaction. He is now just on the DM food. We have another cat also eating the DM food - Jewel - she is non diabetic. The cats don't really like this food. I have been reading on the internet about Fancy Feast Classic and that it is a good economical food to feel diabetic cats.

I would love some feedback on this brand of cat food. I live in Canada so this food is available for me to purchase. I am concerned about changing Sammy's diet, but it is not fair to either cat to not be able to enjoy eating. Sammy is also a big cat, he has been overweight in the past. He lost 4 pounds when he was taken to the vet when we had concerns that he was sick. He will urinating constantly filling the little box.

If someone can let me know if Fancy Feast has been a good brand for their cats, I would appreciate it.
Thank you
Leslie

Hey Leslie,

Fancy Feast classics are great for diabetic kitties I know we have tons of folks here that feed it to their diabetic kitties. You just want to stick to the stuff that isn't grilled or in gravy.

I personally don't but that is only because I have 11 cats and 'm just not opening that many little bitty cans to feed the gang, but I do use just regular Friskies Pate Flavors.

Mel, Max and The Fur Gang.

Fancy Feast is just fine. I have been feeding it to my cats for years. So is Friskies. If you want a food that is a little higher quality, check out Wellness. It is the rare cat that will eat Purina DM for long. It is liver based and they seem to get tired of the taste.

It sounds like your kitty only needed insulin for a short while. If you want to understand what is going on, we can teach you to test his blood sugars at home, just like human diabetics do.

Fancy Feast Classics are all low carb and good for diabetic and non-diabetic kitties.

My cat Ginger (GA) had the same thing happen.
Then I was told she wasnt diabetic after all.

A year later I found, she actually was diabetic, but it had been so long that she ended up with other ailments and insulin did not help her.

I suggest you get a meter and test her Blood Glucose at home once a week, so you can catch it if her BG raises again.

Wow, thanks everyone for your feedback !! And so quickly. I will definately try the Fancy Feast food for our kitties.

We do have a blood glocose monitor now. Sammy has been around 3.8 so far he seems good. We compared him to our non-diabetic cat Jewel, who was 4.2 last reading. We plan to continually check Sammy's blood to ensure he is in the proper ranges.

Can you guys do me a favour and post blood glocose levels of your kitties - as we are trying to determine good levels for Sammy. My vet told me that she doesn't want him to go below 4 or above 16. But I have read that anything 2.2 and higher and below 10 is good. It's all very confusing and over whelming.

Thank you all again

Leslie

leslie, i don't know much and am new to this also, but a lot of these folks have their cat's blood glucose numbers in a spread sheet linked to the bottom of their posts. I see "Max's SS" and well, now i don't see it, but one of the previous answers to your post had a link at the bottom also. mine says "punkin SS" i think.

i also just switched my cat to fancy feast, and just started regular testing yesterday. sending you sympathy - it is hard.

We use US numbers on this board, not metric. So you multiply your numbers by 18. As a general rule, we say cats off insulin range from 40 - 120. There is no danger of them being too low if they are not on insulin. If they are continually running 120 and higher, they may need a dash of insulin or a regiment of the lowest carb food (in the 2-3% range.) to get the numbers down.

BTW, welcome to the Vampire Club! Congrats on getting blood.

Vampire - yes that is what we have felt like. Poor Sammy, but we did get blood fairly easily once we hit the vain properly. I guess it takes a lot of practice.

My cat Mali had a hypo seizure a little over a month ago too, it was terrifying! He has been off of insulin for a couple weeks now and is doing great on a strict all-wet low-carb diet (mostly Fancy Feast CLASSIC varieties). I test him every other day to make sure his BGs aren't going back up.

yeah, I have never seen anything like it before when Sammy went into his Hypo seisure, he was sleeping on an ottoman and woke up and fell off the ottoman and started randomly running around the room and looking in corners. My son knew enough to go an run and get corn syrup, but by the time we got downstairs to where Sammy was, he was on the floor seizing, jerking around. His tongue was sticking out and his eyes were huge, he had peed all over the floor. We shoved his nose in some corn syrup until he finally started to lap up the corn syrup. We fed him and then called the emergency clinic. We were very fortunate to have been home at the time. It was horrifying. I am gonig to pick up some Fancy Feast tomorrow.

My cat just had blood work done and for the glucose it said normal reference ranges are (56 - 153)
I guess that would be (3.1 - 8.5) if dividing by 18 is the conversion.

We were feeding mocha FF but it got to be to expensive for us .. even though it is one of the cheaper brands out there .. but we switched her over successfully to wal marts brand special kitty .. you get four 5.5oz cans wrapped together for 1.34 which is better for our pocketbooks .. She was still able to get her Turkey and giblets flavor she loves and it is still low carb ...
