Bowie - newly diagnosed with Pancreatitis

Bowie was diagnosed about a month ago. After a failed trial on Bexacat and a trip to the ER he was started on .5u of Lantus, oral Cerenia and Mirataz because of the additional diagnosis of Pancreatits.

Following instructions from the vet, he did well for a couple of days and then had a bottoming out of his BG and spent two nights in the hospital.

Released and feeling better he started having diarrhea a couple of days later. We skipped two Lantus shots during this time.

We have had some challenges in these early stages.

Bup and Zofran were added recently and he seems to be a bit better. Not eating as much as we’d like, but eating with no more diarrhea.

He is back on 1u of Lantus BID, with the vet asking us to up that to 1.5u. Did 1.5 last night and BG dropped almost dangerously low. Scaled it back to 1u tonight.

Any other CG with experience managing this along with newly diagnosed diabetes at the same time?? Any insights on how long it lasted? Vet says we are doing everything we can and we’re wondering what else can we do. Thanks.

Pancreatitis is common with diabetic cats. My diabetic is currently in a long stretch of pancreatitis - well over 2 weeks and counting now BUT he has other health issues going on. Most diabetics get over pancreatitis in a few days with home treatment. Some combo of Cerenia, odansetron, appetite stimulant, and pain meds are needed. Fluids can be helpful.

Do you test blood glucose levels at home?

You might also want to take a look at the sticky notes at the top of the Lantus forum. There's lots of information about Lantus along with a post on dosing methods. One thing to note is that we change doses in 0.25u amounts. You will have to approximate the dose since syringes do not come marked in 0.25u increments. We've found that it's safer to change doses in small amount so you don't fly by what could be a good dose for your cat.
