Bossy Ritchie

Ritchie is back to behaving like the king of the house. It's such a relief. I thought he was dying last week. Thank you all for your advice.

He woke me up meowing and demanding to be fed this morning so I tried the one package of Weruva chicken and gravy that I have and... he licked up the gravy which was promising but left all of the chicken. Then he started demanding dry food so I gave him some more of the Dr. Elsey's. Oh well.

He tested 391 which is the highest yet but I'll be patient and wait another day or two and then do a full glucose curve like the instructions say to do. I am confused about all of the discussion of the percent carbs but I will try buying some of those Weruva and Tiki wet foods when I'm in the city today. He probably won't eat them but I'll try.

It's such a relief to have my fussy, bossy cat back. It's amazing that all it took was potassium supplements for a few days.

That’s great news! I’m glad to hear Ritchie is feeling better. Many people do find a good response within a few days of using the K supplement. I’m wondering a bit about the diagnosis of early CKD, it may be that the labs that were run had the info and you just didn’t get it over into the SS, but from what was there, it didn’t scream early CKD, but I didn’t see an SDMA test result, or a value in USG (Urine Specific Gravity) both which help to diagnose early CKD. If I remember correctly, for USG under 1.040- particularly if other blood work values like BUN and creatinine are in normal ranges. And SDMA of 15-20 ug/dl would also be an indication of early CKD. These tests should be run in conjunction to help diagnose. In any case, if it were me, since the phosphorus levels were pretty good, I’d let the dust settle, see if you can get some more good days under your belt, and evaluate food changes in a bit of a more near term rather than “must do” immediately.

Keeping him eating is important, and getting his BG levels better as well. It may have been mentioned before, but I’ll suggest again getting some spot checks in mid cycle, since with this insulin dosing is based on nadirs, not preshots, so it really helps to determine what the dose is doing. None of us really can be sure where the kitty is going based on preshots alone.

I was wrong about the chicken and gravy. It was called Chick Magnet, Chicken and Mackeral in Gravy. I'll try the other flavors.

His SDMA was 21.3. The urine specific gravity is 1.017.

I was gone all day yesterday but I will try to do a proper glucose curve today. He is still testing in the 300's which makes me uncomfortable. But he acts like he's the boss again which is a huge relief.
