Hello,
I am following up with an updated SS for Boo the outside cat after his low blood sugar readings on 08/25/2013. He has not had any insulin since 08/25/2013 am when he got 5 units Prozinc in am which cause very low blood sugar readings early on after the insulin. His preshot glucose 08/26/2013 was up at 141 as I was told it would be but no insulin was given as this was the rebond bounce. I have taken away all dry food and only feeding him FF classic wet food which he is tolerating well. The first few days he seemed like he was starving. I am giving him 2 cans in am and 2 in pm which he seems to be ready for when I feed him. Not sure if this is too much??? His numbers look very good so far and he is acting very good. So far, 5 days of no insulin. I am testing his glucose levels before feeding in am and pm. Should I also be testing at other times during the day after feeding??? If he is able to get OTJ-how often should he be tested??? Keeping his paws crossed that OTJ is in our near future. His next vet visit is mid September at which time he will be weighed again. Any information would greatly be appreciated.

Those are some great numbers to see without any insulin! Most people still take the AMBG and the PMBG during the OTJ Trial and some people also grab the occasional spot-check. After 14 days, most people will continue testing once a day for a while and then eventually once a week and then a couple of times a month.

As to feeding, a lot of the time, it's recommended to feed multiple small meals throughout the day to help support the pancreas by triggering it to naturally produce insulin to keep those numbers down.

I think it would be a good thing to feed small meals throughout the day but I am not sure how I would do this. I work outside the home and Boo is an outside cat with access to the garage through a pet door along with another non-sugar cat and 2 dogs. I am afraid if I left food out all day, someone else may eat it or it would draw flies. Any ideas or remedies that are out there would greatly be appreciated.

Looks like Boo has decided he's had enough of the insulin shots!

OTJ Trial instructions

Here are the instructions for an OTJ trial:
  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas). The morning test is now called the AMBG. The evening test is now called the PMBG.
  • If your cat is green (0-99 human meter) at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If the numbers are blue (100-199 human meter), feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. Food raises BG's. So if the number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • After 2 weeks, if everything is looking good, we have a party! And boy, do we party hearty.

Sometimes, the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support by starting the cat with a tiny dose of insulin again. I had to do that with Wink. We simply start the cat back on a tiny dose of insulin to support the pancreas with healing for a bit longer. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to be safe now then sorry later that you rushed it. With just a little more time we will probably get that strong remission we are looking for.

My only idea is to spread the meals out, even if it's only by 1 hour would help. Here is what I do. My cats gobble up their meals so there is no way to leave some food out for one cat, without my other cats eating the food.

My cats all get fed 4 times a day. Sometimes, their first and second breakfast may only be 1 hour apart, because I have to leave for work. Other days, the morning meals may be more like 2-3 hours apart. The two evening feedings are a bit easier to separate by several hours. These are usually only 3-4 hours apart. It's a routine that I use that works with my erratic work schedule and life responsibilities.

You might want to try something like this, working around your schedule.

yay OTJ trial!!!!. You want 14 days of normal numbers 50-130 to be officially in remission! Keep us updated!

Also we have tips for you on how to stay OTJ
