Bibo is still with no appetite!

Today is the fourth day that Bibo doesn't want to eat. The only thing that he's been eating is the Temptation treats 6 or 7 pieces at a time couple of times a day. I fed him a little bit of chicken baby food with a syringe. His bg is 50. The vet told me that he'll be allright today, but doesn't seem like it. I was wondering if there are any other tests besides the blood test that the vet should do. His blood test was perfect. I am so worried, because it's not like him to not want food. Any suggestions? The vet wanted me to stop by today and get some medicine for Bibo's stomach.
 
Your vet needs to get a bit more worried. Stomach meds for sure, but you need to start monitoring his urine for ketones - 4 days without eating is very dangerous for a diabetic cat, and the last thing you need is for him to start throwing ketones. Please continue to feed him the meat baby food with a syringe, or ask the vet for some a/d and syringe feed him that. Watch for dehydration - perhaps fluids at the vets is needed.

I know the bloodwork came back OK, but please get the vet to check his tongue, throat and teeth for problems. And an appetite stimulant would not be a bad idea.

He has to eat ... and the little buggers can get out of the "habit" of eating very quickly!!
 
Thanks Karen again for your advice. He ate a little of dry food (which I"m against), but considering his situation now, I'm letting it happen. He drank a little of water too. And by tomorrow morning, if he's still the same, I'm gonna take him back to the vet.
I wanted to ask you about a/d and what it meant. Bibo was on insulin, very low dosage for only 15 days and his diabetes was in remission. Could ketones develop even if his bg is very low in numbers?

A/D is a food oftentimes used in syringe feeding. You have to get it from your vet. It can be made into a paste for easier feeding via syringe. I have heard of people mixing it with a little no sodium chicken broth. Ask your vet.

Since you say he is in remission, I wouldn't worry about ketones developing since he is producing his own insulin. One of the reasons ketones develop is because of a lack of insulin which also result in high bg numbers.

But if he isn't eating much the bigger worry would be developing fatty liver disease (hepatic lipidosis). Dehydration is also a potential problem like Karen mentioned. Again, ask your vet if he needs to give him some fluids.

So nice to hear from you. Hope all is well with you. I will ask the vet for a/d syringe food tomorrow. But I really wanna know the reason why his appetiteis so low. It seems like, he gets excited when I open a new can, but once I put it in front of him, he smells it and turns around. He seems to like only dry food right now. He could be nautious but not to the point of vomiting perhaps. Thank you so much for responding to my post. As always...
 
Not infrequently cats stop eating for no know reason. Donna's Shiloh stopped eating and had a feeding tube for six months? before Shiloh started eating again. I would not hesitate with drying dry. My Patches stopped eating well which I might have been due to a UTI. Once she was over the UTI she still would not eat and I syringe feed her until no she is at least eating FF dry. Since Bilbo shows interest in food an appetite stimulant may work. Talk to your vet about using them. They require a script. Cyproheptadine has to be used twice daily while mirtazapine is once every three days.

Also ask your vet to show you exactly how to syringe feed so as not to aspirate him. Not sure if you have already been given instructions on how to do that.

On the other hand, I wonder if he is just being a holdout for the dry food? They are so smart sometimes and tend to read us like a book and manipulate us with all our worry. ;)

How much dry food is he eating? Is he acting normal otherwise?

You might also ask your vet about trying an appetite stimulant. In the site I gave you in my last post Tanya talks about the different appetite stimulants. Maybe that will be all it takes to turn him around.

Also another good product to sprinkle on their food is Fortiflora. I believe I ordered mine online but your vet might carry it. You can search this site for what others have said about it.

He's actually active and ok. He doesn't show any other symptoms except not asking for food, which he used to do it especailly at nights. He's lost 3/4pounds in 5 days, and I don't want him to loose more. I will discuss all this with the vet again, and have him look at his throat and teeth, maybe there is a clue somewhere. Thank you Larry and Pamela for your caring responses. I'll keep you guys posted.

I also agree in trying to get an appy stimulant.
Fatty liver can be very serious and possibly deadly if not caught in time.
My Max has had it twice.
You have been given great advice so far. He also could be nausious, wanting to eat
but just can't.
I had to give Max mirtazapine last year to get him to eat
 
did you get urine test done (remove urine via cystocentesis and run a culture & sensitivity test on it)?
probably should check for infection, too.

i just got some a/d from vet and frankly wellness or evo are similar consistency to be syringe fed. just mix in some water to thin it for the syringe. you could ask the vet for a little 6ml feeding syringe -- normally they don't charge for it. cleo's had a bladder infection so i've been syringe feeding her every 2 hrs while we're awake. so she's getting close to a 5.5oz can of food daily. a lot of times it'll jump start their appetite so they begin eating again. but if there's nausea or pain bibo should probably have some meds to help with that.

i really worry if cat stops eating for more than a day. cleo's had fatty liver from it. very important to get them eating even if it's via syringe feeding or feeding tube.
