BB 05/27 gets her insulin tomorrow

Well here we go! I'm in need of some moral support. BB's vet called in her prescription tonight but I won't be able to get it in time to start until tomorrow evening. I guess I will be going low and slow since the vet wants me to start with 1 unit. He only wants me to test her BG 6 hours after each shot, which seems terribly wrong to me and would be less testing then I have been doing pre insulin. I'm planning to disregard that and test before giving her shots.

Definitely test before every shot to see it is safe to give the insulin. If in doubt, stall don’t feed and post and ask for help. Test 20 mins later to see if BG is rising.

What are you feeding now?

Starting with 1 unit is good.

We are here for you!

Having a sick BB has me so stressed out that all three of my cats have started sleeping with me to comfort me.

First shot did not go well! I unit and she dropped to 49. We decided to try the first in the evening to get it started and since we would be here all night. Well one of us fell asleep and the other thought I had it under control. So I missed the 6 hr test and am so so so glad my BB survived the night.

You need to reduce the dose to 0.75 units after the fall below 50.
Did you feed some high carb food with the drop below 50? And test again in20 mins
Would you mind putting Lantus in the signature please so we know what you are using? .

Only 14 minutes until AMPS. I am just in shock, I thought I was super prepared and that 1 unit was so tiny I wouldn't see much change.

Well, definitely can't shoot at the regular time, anyway! How off-schedule can you get? That is, if you shot an hour or two late this morning, would you be OK shooting 12hrs later tonight and then slowly moving the shot time back to the usual?

For what it's worth, Amber did basically the same thing to me on her very first shot of insulin. I tried diet change alone and she stayed stubbornly high, so I finally did a shot and she plummetted to green immediately! Thought I got lucky and she'd go to remission immediately-- sadly it was not to be.

Well she is back up now! My guy an EMT was with her all day but unable to get a sample. So I popped home at lunch to do it and she is at 322. I'm nervous to even give her .75 would it be silly to try .5 tonight instead? I have already set alarms for every hour to make sure to test her more often.

Does anyone give less at night since they eat less during the night?

Lantus likes the same dose both am and pm doses, otherwise you mess up the depot.
We don’t know how low she got during the night last night....she could have dropped lower than the 49.
At the moment she is bouncing from the low numbers last night. That is quite normal for newly diagnosed cats to do this.
Bounces happen when the cat drops too fast, too low or lower than they are used to and they dump stored glucose and regulatory hormones into their system to ‘save themselves’. Bounces can last from 1 to 6 cycles so don’t be concerned if BB stays higher for a few cycles.
As you are just starting insulin and BB had a strong reaction to the first dose of insulin, you could go back to 0.5 units as her dose.
You would have to stay at this dose for a week though, to let the depot fill. Chopping and changing messes with the depot.

Have you thought of an auto feeder for overnight? I found them invaluable.
Cats often drop lower at night and it is best if you can feed the same way for both cycles and an auto feeder allows this.
Are you offering snacks during the first half of the cycle?

Have a look at the two dosing methods at the top of the Lantus page in the yellow stickies and see which one suits you better.
There is the Tight Regulation and the Start Low Go Slow.
When you decide which one suits you can you put it into the signature please so we know, as it makes a difference when we are offering advice.. Thanks:)

I chose the low and slow as the tight regulation scares me.
I am giving treats when I test as well as offering her food every 3-4 hours through out the day, then I have been leaving as bowl of food out for her at night but she is a cuddler and sleeps when I sleep.

I will look into a food dispenser, they have them for soft food?

Most of us used the Petsafe 5. There is a spot below the tray where you can fit a very small gel pack. Or add an ice cube on top of the food. It'll keep it cool, then melt and add water which is good for diabetics.

I personally gave BB her shot this morning for the first time, funny its what I dreaded the most but after all the ear pricking it was nothing

238 PMPS!! I think she is getting past the bounce and hopefully will just not need much juice. She was also a little more active today, wandered around the house and napped in multiple places rather then staying in her room.

Hi Dawn, tomorrow, could you start a new post with the link to this one. Our convention here is one post per day that you post.

Tonight is the 5th cycle after the skip - it can take up to six cycles for the depot to build up after a skip, so that's a factor too. So hopefully tonight or tomorrow she'll come down for you.
