Batten the hatches...Pumbaa is diving again.

I am so tempted to put a tiny drop of honey in his food to slow down this dive.

I've read both the positives and negatives for doing this, and I'm torn. To me, I know that he's now capable of hitting blues and greens with this dose, and I don't need any further proof. I would like to prevent days on end of bounces, due to his 65 reading at +2 tonight. I'm not going to reduce his dose if he goes below 50, I am going to continue this dose until he really settles into it. So, to me, there is really no sense in letting him continue to dive and causing his liver to flood his body with sugar in response to this low number.

Anyone have any input before I try and slow down the dive? I've tried pure protein and higher carbed food so far, and that didn't work. Pumbaa's morning food had 4% carbs and his evening food had 8% carbs. He's been given cooked chicken breast and sardines for pure protein.

Just let him eat normally what he wants. That's what I did with Chip. You already know the bounce will be horrendous, but with the shed getting there and no reduction, the bounce shouldn't last near as long. If he goes lower then go on hypo watch.

Are we tired of Lantus yet?

(just kidding)

(tired from Lantus for sure) @-)

Just did a +3 and he's down to 54. I did put a teeny drop of honey in his food, but he ran from me before eating it, and is now hiding under my bed.

He just doesn't understand why I poke at him all the time, and why I try to get him to eat all the time. I can't blame him...he's a cat. I just wish he understood that I am doing all of this for him and his health and longevity.

So tiring and frustrating. Sometimes I just want to cry.

Hugs Suz I can imagine how your feeling poor Pummbaa. Feel like that with Missy these days with everything else, still not home testing. Know I don't participate here much, usually don't have much to say

Cheryl, thank you. I know that many of us commiserate with each other, for good reasons! That's why I had wondered where you had gone.

I'm sure you still have lots of questions, and I have one for you. How come you aren't home testing yet?

Pumbaa is now fighting me because he feels better, overall, and knows the routines. And I need to stay a step ahead of him. He doesn't like getting poked/injected now, any more than I like poking/injecting him. But it must be done.

Did you try all of the suggestions to get Missy (and you) comfy with home testing? I might be doing the kitty taco routine soon, and wrapping Pumbaa in a towel since he's not happy with our current routine.

(((HUGS))) to you. I hope that everything gets better in your world, including dealing with Missy's diabetes!

At +4, Pumbaa was down to 51, but he finally ate the FF Classics, beef & chicken I had put a small drop of honey in.

He's still very active/feisty, and not showing any signs of being hypo. For that I am thankful! Except for when it comes to catching him to test his BG levels! *LOL*

You are doing good, you know the drill.

Guess Pumbaa is trying to tell you your Friday night social life is here?

How sad is that, but hey where is Carl?

+5 and Pumbaa is up to 55. Thankfully.

That is due to the miniscule drop of honey I put in with his food. No matter what anyone else says, I am now sold on using a teeny (smaller than tiny) bit of honey in Pumbaa's food to slow down a dive. I know his history, and now know that getting him to eat additional LC foods, including protein-rich sardines and plain cooked chicken, isn't enough to slow down/reverse his dives.

I will check him again at +6 and +7 to make sure he doesn't start diving again. Please, God, don't let my little boy bounce too high after these beautiful low numbers. I would love for him to start tomorrow morning with nothing more than a yellow number. :)

Thank you, Dale. Wash, rinse, repeat, eh? *LOL* At least I do know the routine now. *sigh*

Carl must be on duty tonight, because he's normally here for hand-holding. What a great guy! And thank you for holding my hand tonight!

Not to change the subject, but round steak is on sale down here, at Basha's, for $1.87/lb. (that is amazing!) and I just finished grinding 4 lbs. to make my mom her favorite meatloaf, as well as 12 lbs. to make my mom Italian meatballs. The meatloaf I slice into single serving pieces and freeze, which Mom can then take out of the freezer and enjoy for dinner any night. The meatballs I pre-freeze on cookie sheets, then bag and give my mom a huge bag to take out any amount she needs for dinner. The last time I made the meatballs was last November because that was the last time beef was on sale like this. I may have to go back and buy more of the roundsteak just to have hamburger meat handy in the freezer. I freeze the ground beef in single patties, which can then be used for hamburgers, or defrosted and mingled together for the correct amount for any recipe. I have not purchased packaged hamburger meat in over a decade...at least I know that my ground beef doesn't have pink slime in it!

+6 = 65. I won't go to bed yet, but will nap on the couch and set my cell phone alarm to wake me up in one hour increments to test Pumbaa and make sure that he is on the rise, for the right reasons, and not just due to honey being added to his food.

Are we having fun yet? *sigh*

It's a good looking green run.

And of course it sounds like you are all set to make your own raw cat food.

I mean if you can grind steak. What kind of grinder?

I have a meat grinder attachment for my Kitchen Aid Mixer. But I don't trust it to be able to handle the bones without burning out the motor if I make ground raw chicken for the cats.

Some day I'll order a Tasin TS-108, as recommended on the catinfo.org website.

Sorry Suze, I missed this last night. I wasn't on the late shift, which is why I wasn't around. (I had to get up earlier today). Looks like Dale was here to help, and it looks like you made it through the night okay!

Carl,

No need to apologize! You also have a life/demanding job/commitments and you helped me through Pumbaa's dive a week ago yesterday, and so last night was just a routine wash/rinse/repeat. :)

Dale kept me company and helped keep me awake, and somehow, whether due to my intervention or due to Pumbaa's own biology, the brakes went on at 51. Whew!

Thank you for caring!

Hi, Suze, Hope Pumbaa is doing better today.

Have you thought about buying bonemeal? I don't know if you could find organic, but you could use it instead of grinding the chicken bones.

Yes, thank you, I have researched this. :)

The company listed on catinfo.org, which supplies TC Feline, only ships within Canada.

Natascha at TC Feline referred me to Jim at knowbonespetsupply.com, which is here in the states, as they are a supplier of the TC Feline additive, but they don't sell retail, and there aren't any retailers in my area who carry this.

Then, since my cats did not like the Instinct Raw frozen food I tried giving them, I kind of gave up on the raw diet for a while. My concentration has been on lowering Pumbaa's numbers and changing the diet for my Border Collie so that she will lose some weight. I now cook chicken for Beck, the Border Collie, and give her ground cooked chicken as well as ground veggies, instead of kibble. Beck is doing great on this new diet, and I am happy about that!

Then, I also cook for my mom, and make sure she has low fat, low salt meals all week long.

*sigh* I wind up eating less than healthy foods frequently because I'm too pooped after doing all of the above to still take time to cook healthy for me, too!

Anyway, if I wind up doing raw for my cats and dog, I will invest in the recommended Tasin TS-108 Electric Meat Grinder.
