Hi
I just got some liquid injectable cyanocobalamin for Bam Bam and Sebastian. The bottle is small 1000mcg/mL--a 10mL bottle.

How much do I put in a syringe--assuming I am going by units using an insulin syringe? And as I understand it it's typically done ...every day for a week then once a week for X weeks...or something?

Oh, my vet said this:

"The dose is 250 mcg (usually 0.25 ml of a 1000 mcg/ml concentration) once weekly for 6 weeks, then monthly. It's probably overkill to give it every day, but it's not harmful (he'll just eliminate the extra in his urine)."

But I have no idea what that dose is in terms of an insulin syringe....Can someone please refresh me?

thanks

My bottle says to give 1/4 ML which is 25 units on the U-100 syringes I am using for insulin.

Thanks Julia. Well neither cat has any visible neuropathy, and one has just been diagnosed with pancreatitis. The other, sebastian has ok B12 levels, have not checked in Bam Bam, the pancreatic/Db cat or B12 although he IS anemic...so thought I'd just give this as a start and change if there is a reason to. It will be converted to methyl B12 in the body.

My package insert says 1 mL is 1000ml...so I guess one quarter of that is 250ml...is that the same as 250mcg?

The bottle I just got is a 100 ml bottle and it says 5000mcg/ml. Much stronger concentration. My vet told me to give 5 units on the insulin syringe once a week. I was getting the doses at the vet for the last three weeks and they finally ordered me my own bottle. Vandow my pancreatitis kitty has just recently been getting it weekly. I think it is helping. Mine is 5 times stronger then yours so I would guess it would be 25 units on a u100 insulin syringe which is .25 ml. Does that sound right? My math mind is a little tired tonight.

Martica, I have the same that you have except in a 100 ml bottle and I give 25 units once a week in a U100 syringe to my diabetics. IM vet checked and it can be given twice a week in the beginning.......I just go with once a week. Also, my regular vet, not IM vet, believes in giving a shot as a starter if kitty doesn't eat before starting an appetite stimulant.

The B12 bottle I have is dark brown, liquid is a dark pink, says B 12 on front, 100 ml bottle. It does not sting.....has never bothered any of the cats that get it......I just inject 25 units once a week.

Now, I do remember a vet long ago using a B vitamin injection that said it really stings but I think it was a yellow color and is usually put in an IV bag for a cat on fluids so it is diluted down. Is there a B 12 complex that vets can use that really stings like crazy? The B 12 pink solution does not sting.
