Morning kids, hope all are doing well out there. Just wanted to tell the story of yesterday in case anyone is interested. I was just too beat to type last night.

We started the day at 2am when the phone rang and since my cell phone is the morning chicken alarm, both cats wanted to eat right then. They had us up the rest of the night asking for food.
So it was a rough start to the day. I tested Asher about an hour and a half after I usually test him and he was 300 so I chose not to shoot insulin in the morning.

We got them in the crates fairly easily, but not two miles from home Alby pooped in his crate so it was a lovely ride to the vet. (They howled the entire way also) The vet staff was so nice and understanding about the mess when I arrived tho, and wouldn’t let me clean him up, they said they would handle it. I must have looked pretty bad.

They ran the blood tests on both cats when I dropped them off and by that time Asher’s bg was up to 500+ so the doc shot 1 unit at 9am before anything was done.

I spent the day with my Mom handling various problems so that added to the stress of the day with no sleep.

Both cats got dentals, Asher had two back teeth pulled and Alby had one small front one pulled. Alby got his rabies shot since he has reactions sometimes and they wanted him to be there to be monitored. All went well.

I picked them up around 4:30pm and it was a quiet ride home. Asher looked pretty good, Alby looked terrible. Upon arrival home, both cats were a little wobbly but they did not go hide, they wanted to be with us and got head scratchins and love. We fed some food gradually, and mixed a little more water with it than usual. We ground up some chicken and shrimp for a food topping too. Both cats ate. There was preening purring and peeing later in the evening. Asher did drink from his water bowl (not much). I haven’t seen that since January.

We shot 1 unit for Asher last night since his pmps was 265 and I wanted to be safe since we all needed some sleep and I didn’t want to be up testing half the night, plus put him thru more pokes.

This morning Asher was 296 which I thought was pretty decent for only giving him 1 unit last night. So this morning we shot 1.6. I just don’t feel ready to take him back up to the 2.4 we were giving him before the dental. We’ll see what happens today, I will get a mid day check in and then make a new decision at pmps.

They sent us home with chicken flavored tramidol for the pain. Asher ate like usual this morning, maybe a little less, was up bounding around this morning looking for birds at the window, but now he’s sleeping on my desk. Alby on the other hand was not ready to get out of bed this morning (he slept in my arms and snored all night) and he would not eat this morning. He is back fast asleep on Tom’s desk. So...I have not given pain meds yet. What do you guys think about it? Do I need to try and get this into them?

Thanks again for everyone’s care on concern thru this whole thing. It is wonderful knowing you are doing the right thing and you have people rooting for you. We truly appreciate it.

It sounds like the day went as well as could be expected. Well, except maybe for the pooping part....So you would think that having two bad teeth would have impacted Asher's bg levels. The next few days should be interesting. Hope some lower numbers are the result of this adventure.

No dental experience here with drowsy aftermaths. Maybe ask on Health about Alby's reactions and whether you should force pain meds? Asher seems to feel well, but they do hide pain. I would want pain meds after having teeth pulled! How hard would it be to give it them? A battle or a possibility? If a possibility, I think I would try.....

Alby just got up and started to eat so I feel better about that. I didn’t want to even try and get any meds into him on an empty stomach.
Alby’s tooth that was removed was a tiny front one. We can try in a bit to see if we can get any meds in there.

Asher on the other hand had two big ones removed so I am gonna try to get the meds in there now. It’s “chicken flavored” but I’m not optimistic on their liking it at all.
He is in his bed now and pretty sleepy so I will try.

I’ll letcha know how I do. Prob will have a chicken tramadol decorated shirt....

Bad reaction to the tramadol with Asher. LOTS and I do mean LOTS of spit and foaming at the mouth. (vet said there would be some, this was way beyond some)

It scared him and he ran all over the house. I finally got him calmed down and back on my desk again (we had a half a shrimp to wash our mouth out). Dunno if I will give that again unless he looks like he’s having mouth troubles. It really freaked him out. If I tried that on Alby you could times the bad reaction by five since he is a real baby/drama queen.

I had to try it. Don’t want him to be in pain but he was so stressed all day yesterday so I don’t want to do it again today :(

If you are really worried, you could ask for another pain reliever. I know there are several different kinds in several different forms?

Poor Donna Mama bean and baby Asher!! It's the bad taste of the medicine - the chicken does not disguise it. Harley did that too when I tried giving him chicken flavored cyproheptadine and also chicken flavored odansetron. He frothed, foamed and vomited both medicines. It was terrible. I felt so bad for him I babied him by taking a wet paper towel and wiping all the drool and foam from his mouth and washing his head like a mama kitty would do.

Big hugs :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: from me for you right now! I can imagine how you must feel: you don't want them to be in any pain but you don't want them to suffer more by administering bad medicine either. It's a catch-22. After my ill fated attempts at giving Harley those 2 meds I bawled like a baby for an hour feeling like the worst kitty mama ever. It's not your fault. You couldn't not have known what would happen.

If the vet says it's important that they take this medicine, you could try asking if it comes in an injectable. It would save you and the kits a lot of stress and both you and the vet will know the medicine was administered correctly.

One of my childhood cats had three teeth pulled and it took her about 4-5 days before she felt better so here's hoping that the boyz feel better and heal much sooner!

Thanks Sue and Laura!
Honestly I am not too worried. Both cats today have eaten normally and are clingy and want to be with us. They are preening and purring (and snoring). I think if they felt bad they would be hiding. They hid like that in the past, like when Asher had a UTI, etc. We’ll take it day by day. The vet is gonna call today to check in and I will mention it to him and see what else might be out there to use.

Hey Laura, how are things going with you and Harley? Better I hope! You are the queen of awesome momma beans!

Here is the sleepy boy moments ago on my desk :)

Awwww, so adorable! Love the paw print kitty blanket.

I don't want to hijack your thread so the short story version is that Harley and I have been fighting an on and off again battle with pancreatitis for almost a month now. He is showing a few signs of starting to feel a little better (cross paws, antijinx to the max!!!!) and I'll try to make time to start his own thread sometime this weekend, 'cuz there's lots to tell.

Aw the two A boyz had a long day yesterday. Glad they seem more back to normal today. Alby's reaction yesterday may have been not only a slower time recovering from anesthesia but also because he had vacs.
One of my civvies,Kokamo, seems to not feel well for about 2 days after vacs and sleepy. I don't know if I will get his vacs this year since hes not due for rabies except if we have hurricanes this summer and have to evacuate they all have to be up to date. I really don't like any of them getting vacs, they have never been outside in their lives.
Cute pic of the sleepyhead!

Hi Donna, I'm glad the boyz came through the dental great.

If I had a tooth pulled I would want pain meds, kitties hide pain very well, when the vet calls ask him for some Bupe (sorry I don't know the long name) but it is an injectable so it's easy squeezy for us syringe saavy peeps. That is what they gave Harley after his dental.

Scritches to da boyz.

The only reason I get the rabies shot is it is required by law here in PA. I am not a big fan of vacs since none of my cats have ever gone outside. Injection site cancers are real, I know a local person that has dealt with it. Right before Alby got fixed when he was about a year old, they made me get all the vacs or wouldn’t do the procedure. (I should have left my old vet then) We got Alby home and he seizured, so rushed him back and they gave him a shot to bring him out of it. It was VERY scary. He hasn’t had shots since and my old vet was pissy about it for sure.

Anyhow, the vets get in trouble from the state if they don’t do rabies here, so that is all I will do, and with my nose pinched. My new vet put an IV in Alby then gave the rabies, and had the shot (adrenaline maybe?) ready in case he did have a reaction, but no reaction. Better safe than sorry. The thought is now that he reacted to the distemper shot most likely but we had no clue since he got 3 or 4 shots at once.

Bupe = Buprenex (buprenorphine) Whoever synthesized that drug has my vote to become a major deity. When that happens, I volunteer to become their voodoo priestess and offer vegetable sacrifices in their honor.

It could very well be the distemper shot Donna. Kelli (GA), one of my childhood kitties had a bad reaction when she got the rabies and distemper shots together. It wasn't quite as severe as Alby's but it was very scary. Since she was an outdoor kitty she needed both shots so my mom's vet gave her the two shots separately in order to determine which one she had the reaction to and it was the distemper. From then on when she got her yearly shots they were given separately and the vet administered I think a steroid along with the distemper to prevent reactions.

I only get Harley and Princess rabies shots because it's required for a pet license in my city. Otherwise I'd do without too.

 OMG that is too funny! But very true, Harley loved it, I would shoot him up and say "have a nice trip" and I swear he smiled at me.

So glad the kitties did well with the dentals, although sounds like it was a stressful time for you the mama bean. Love the sleepy pic of Asher. Every time I see him I want to squeeze him cuz he so dang cute. Hope you have a nice relaxing recovery day today. Paws crossed for nice #'s for Asher.

Yeah Bupe rules, I would absolutely ask for that. It's like a teensy amount of liquid you pop it in their mouth they barely even notice. I think it's basically morphine. Stuff works like you wouldn't believe, and as I understand it the side effects are next to none (with the doses regulated of course).

Hope they are all better very soon!!!!
