Please be advised that "arm and hammers new cat litter called "double duty" has a lot of perfumes that can cause very serious breathing reactions in some cats.
After switching my cat smokey over to it right after he got his diabetic diagnosis he began coughing. He was not doing this on the clay litter that was not scented. He never coughed before this. He has had some hair balls which he has coughed up but not this kind of asthma like coughing.
As soon as I found out that cat litters with dust or scents can trigger breathing issues like broncitis, or asthma I got rid of the stuff immediately.
I later read on amazon.com review and tons of people hated the scents. One other person said the cat coughed and was sick, another lady said her 3 cats got skin rashes and lost a bunch of fur. Another lady on amazon.com said after scooping the litter her asthma got really bad and she had to go to the emergency room where the doctor said he had heard this litter was a problem with other peoples breathing.
Do not get it, no matter how cheap it is. It has a lot of chemicals added to it. The vet said my cat had some signs problems on his lungs related to irritations in the radiographs they took. It was only two weeks on the "arm and hammer double duty" and the coughing started right after. so now I feel pretty sure it's the new litter since other people and cats got lung problems with the litters chemicals. My cat was maybe using it two weeks. But it did it's damage. Hopefully he will get better and it won't continue to be a problem.
The vet said cats with diabetic conditions can't easily be treated for asthma with the steriods because it makes the diabetic condition worse. Just don't use any litter with scents or much dust in the event your cat might get asthma. I am now using paper litter and it's totally dust free and Smokey is fine with it.
He is taking an antihistamine for his cough and hopefully things will clear up and it's just allergic reaction and he doesn't have regular asthma. I am praying this heals. Poor Smokey. He's been a trooper. Just be warned.
