Good day folks. Our 8yr old male kitty named Darth was diagnosed in May. After trying Senvelgo with no luck, and now on Prozinc, slowly increasing doses now to 4units twice a day, we have been unable to regulate his glucose. He sometimes reads a normal range for a day or two and then spikes for many days. The last couple days he's hovering between 25ml and 31ml. We test at home mornings and evenings before feeding and insulin. He is still eating normal (prescription diabetic food from vet) but he is drinking a lot! Has signs of neuropathy and only walks short distances. He also has been peeing throughout the house and recently its increased! We are at our at our wits end! He is not seemingly adverse to using his litterbox as he still uses it much of the time, but has also just started peeing on furniture. He was checked in May for uti but was clear. Perhaps another uti check? Off for yet another vet trip today. We've been going to vet so often its getting a bit crazy. We have spent nearly $2500 treating him so far and can't afford much more. He has been a lovely affectionate cat whom we love but it is getting quite overwhelming. Do you think another type of insulin would be effective? Our vet suggested perhaps doing an ultrasound but at $1200 this is unaffordable. Any advice appreciated! Thanks folks!

Which "prescription" diabetic food is he eating? Wet or dry? A lot of the "prescription" vet foods are nothing special and too high in carbs for a diabetic. Go figure!

Here is a post on neuropathy and how you can help it. Feline Diabetic Neuropathy Maybe the wonky back legs is making it hard to make it into the litter box. Do you have a low sided litter box? I'd put some pee pads surrounding the box as well.

Are you home testing his blood sugars? Which meter? The answers to those questions and more can be put in your signature. Details on what to do in this post: New? How You Can Help Us Help You!

Oh my goodness. That sounds so difficult! I also understand the financial strain. 😞 It sounds like his numbers are really high. I can understand this as well. Have you been keeping a log of his BG numbers? It sounds like, from what you say,
He sometimes reads a normal range for a day or two and then spikes for many days.
that he may be bouncing from the lower/more normal numbers. If you can get a spreadsheet set up I would be better able to help you.

If you have not yet switched to a low carb wet food diet, this could really help your baby. The blood glucose will go down with a low carb wet food diet compared to a dry food diet or a higher carb wet food diet. I would recommend doing this first (if you haven’t already.)
