On Zyrtec. My civvie Tripper who will be 19 in few months has always been picky eater but now barely eating.

Long story short hopefully. Only issue with her has been thyroid. Many months getting the methimazole dose straightened out. We did finally. 3 different vet practices disagree on certain aspects of labs (in signature). Marje has already reviewed.

Anyway, last couple days Tripper isn't eating, barely tablespoon a day. Impossible to pill. Have tried cerenia suspension and pill. Got a pill in her for 2 days, suspension this morning, though she spit some out. Because the methimazole is transdermal I don't have ears to use for mirtz. Talked with Primary Vet Dr N yesterday. We are going to skip her AM methimazole so I can get the mirtz going. And going back to budesonide everyday instead of every other. Starting today and call him back in Friday.

It occurred to me maybe she can't smell her food. Humidity is terribly high here. Tripper is allergic to trees, grasses, weeds and such although inside only with a/c on even my sinuses are stuffy. And she has been sneezing, though doesn't sound congested. I asked about Zyrtec in the past and Dr N isn't familiar with it in cats so won't recommend it.

I know a few of you use it. Is generic ok? And it's 1/2 tab correct? It might help with sinuses & appetite.

This morning she was pooping and started crying, this is a first for her. Only a little nugget came out. So miralax was given.

I'm on my way to pick up more cerenia and will stop at store to find some smelly food for her.

Generic Zyrtec is perfectly fine to use. I use both CVS and Walmart brand. Not sure how much Tipper weighs, but my vet recommended half of a 10mg tab for my ~9lb cat. And it definitely increases Sophie’s appetite, so maybe it will help Tipper with that as well.

Thank you Sarah. Trip now weighs 6.8 lbs. Always small. Was maintaining 7.4-7.8 for months. Started dropping after 7/13. Her highest weight was 9 lbs when younger. She was 7.2 on 8/3, 7/28, 7/21

THIS page recommends a dose “somewhere between 2.5 - 5 mg”, so not sure if you might want to start with a lower dose since she is pretty small. I usually give Sophie 1/3 of a tablet and it works pretty well for her. Also want to point out that the previous page I linked says to “use with caution” in pets with thyroid issues. Not sure exactly what that means or what the implications are, just wanted to be sure to mention it

Thanks so much Sarah. I have it here for me. Cut into quarters as best I could. Tried giving with food, she would not eat it. I was able to throw a piece down her throat. I think it was the bigger of the quarters, no big deal there.

After picking up her refills, I went to a different grocery store I normally don't use. I scored big time in cat food. They carry the Paws brand in beef!!!!!!! Normally Trippers favorite flavor. Only 1 store by me carries that brand and in chicken only, mixed grill if lucky. They also had ff beef and FF medley chicken with veggie. Also got a couple of seafood flavors. I get home, opened the paws beef and she ate 1/4 can. So something worked.

Glad to hear you got her to take it! Sophie usually turns her nose up at any meds I try to sneak in her food, but she eats the crushed Zyrtec no problem so I am definitely thankful for that, because I can’t pill her either. Hopefully it helps clear up Tipper’s nose and gets her to start eating better soon :bighug:

Since eating is critical, i would recommend to buy some CIAO liquid food. Try different favor. It is not high in carbs.

Everytime my cats are not eating due to serious illness, liquid food saves me and them. I think it is because sick cats prefer liquod food with a strong scent.
