Hello LL!!

Yesterday's condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=124890

Billie is acting normal - good appy, playing, normal activity level, and a nice AMPS - but she had some diarrhea a little while ago. The past two days, she had soft poos, but this was straight up diarrhea. Poor Billie. It only happened once so far. I don't know if it's from the Convenia, the Panacur, or both. I called her vet to let him know, but he is out today. Another vet called me back and told me to give her some rice, but I'm not fond of that idea. Tonight is the last dose of Panacur.

I have been giving her Fortiflora - about a packet and a half over the course of each day. Is there anything else I can/should give her that might help? I read that Pedialite can be given to help replenish electrolytes, so I'm wondering if that would be a good idea. I have tried to give her pumpkin in the past and she has said no thanks, but I can try that again.

Charlene and Amy, thanks for stopping by yesterday! Amy, to answer your question about litter, I haven't done anything different recently. I have always gotten either Fresh Step or Scoop Away, depending on what's on sale. So, I'm still stumped!

I had been sticking to Hound & Gatos and Evo, but on Saturday when she hit 47, I gave her ice cream, MC Wellness Minced Chicken (has eggs), and FF Classic Chicken (has fish). So, we got way off track as far as food allergy experiments go.

I noticed a couple new hives yesterday, but her coughing has been quiet today (super anti-jinx). I think I need to give the food allergy experiment a fair try and be really strict with it. I'm going to do a pet store run later to find more food options of varying carb levels without fish and eggs in them, and I'm going to avoid the parmesan. It's easier to avoid the parmesan now that I have Fortiflora for bribery.

I hope everyone is having a nice day!! Vines to all the cats and beans in need.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 diarrhea

Poor Billie - diarrhea is the worst for the long haired kitties. Did you ever find that Renew Ultimate the Marje suggested? I've seen a few beans use it with great success here. I have heard of people feeding rice water for diarrhea, but not rice itself.

ETA: Some kitties like baby food squash but not pumpkin. Keeping her hydrated is a good idea.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 diarrhea

Thanks Wendy! Yes, diarrhea is no fun in her pretty long hair. She needed a bit of a sponge bath which she hates. I didn't look for the Renew Ultimate because I saw Fortiflora at the vet and grabbed that, but looking at the ingredients, it sounds like the Renew is a stronger probiotic. I'll look for that today when I'm on the hunt for food. I'll also pick up baby squash along with pumpkin. I'm thinking she'll eat one of those with some Fortiflora on top since she is currently obsessed with it.

With rice water and/or Pedialyte, is there a concern of her numbers going way up? Or is that okay/worth it in this case to make sure she doesn't get dehydrated?

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 diarrhea

So sorry to hear Billie still has a few itchies and now diarrhea. I did a quick search on Pedialyte. It looks like it contains dextrose (and one also contains sucralose) so that might drive Billie's numbers up a bit. Hopefully others will have some other thoughts on it or some alternatives that might be good.

Lots of vines headed to you two! :YMHUG:

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 diarrhea

For now I'd just try making sure you've got enough water in with her food. I've not seen people use pedialyte for FD kitties, so don't know what it'll do to the numbers.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 diarrhea

Thanks Shelly and Wendy! I may be jumping the gun since she only had one diarrhea episode so far. I'll start with the pumpkin and extra water and see if that helps. Unfortunately, Miss Billie will not eat food that has water added to it, but if I make a little cocktail of water, Fortiflora sprinkles and chicken, she'd probably go for that.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 +2 216 diarrhea

Hi Deanna:

Sorry about the diarrhea. Absolutely no fun with long-haired cats. Been there, cleaned that! :?

Cinco did not like pumpkin, but he will eat the baby food squash, mixed in with his regular food, so if one doesn't go over well, be sure to try the other.

Sending good poo vines and hope it was a one-time deal.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 +2 216 diarrhea

Deanna, sorry to hear Billie is still having issues with hives coughing and now the diarrhea ohmygod_smile I sure hope as of this writing that the diarrahea has resolved itself. Tiger wasn't fond of canned pumpkin either, but she will eat organic baby food winter squash and though I use it to prevent constipation, I hear it works for diarrhea as well. Sending tons of healing and feel better vines!

Thanks Ruth! I tried pumpkin and baby squash - no go on both, even with chicken and fortiflora mixed in. Billie is picky. Brooklyn loved the pumpkin, so she got some extra fiber tonight. On the bright side, no diarrhea since this morning, so at least it's not frequent diarrhea. She hasn't gone poo again at all.

I scoured the pet store for more low carb food with minimal ingredients and no egg or fish. I brought home a few new kinds to try, so hopefully, I can find some food that Billie likes as much as Merrick for food allergy experiments. She likes the Hound & Gatos and Evo, but she doesn't love them. Also, they're only 2% carbs, so it doesn't do me any good if I need to give her MC or HC.

I didn't hear her cough all day until a few minutes ago. I feel horrible when she is coughing, but the fact that she went all day without coughing till now is still good. Better than Friday and Saturday.

I hope everyone is having a nice night!! We are on a horribly wonky shot schedule from Saturday night, so I will be shooting at midnight tonight! I guess I'm on west coast time.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 +2 216 +6 88

Ugh on the loose poo! That's not fun with a long haired kitty. Hopefully it was just a one-time thing that resolves on its own. Sending anti-itchy, anti-coughing, and good poo vines. It does look like she's starting to settle nicely into the dosecrease, or maybe one of the treatments has started to make her feel better, bringing those numbers down a bit.

Re: 9/8 Billie AMPS 163 +2 216 +6 88

Glad she is doing better. Slippery elm bark syrup is great for diarrhea. If you can find SEB powder in bulk at a health food store, you only need a small amount...1/8 to 1/4 cup.

Microwave Method

Take a glass container which holds two cups. Put one cup of water in the cup. Add 1 to 1.5 tsp of slippery elm bark powder.
Heat in the microwave on high for about 1.5 minutes. Remove from the microwave and stir, then put it back in for about another 30 seconds. Keep an eye on it because you do not want it to boil over. Remove from the microwave and stir again.
Allow to cool and give ¼ - ½ (0.25 to 0.5) teaspoon up to 4 times a day. This will keep at room temperature for a day or in the fridge for up to five days.

1 tsp = 5 mls

My vet checked to see where the closest vet is to you that does NRT.....North Andover, MA. Pretty far....

Re: 9/8 Billie PMPS 202

Thanks Jen and Marje!!

Marje, thanks so much for looking into NRT for Billie. I really appreciate that. It would be a long trip, but maybe worth it if nothing else gives us any answers. That's out near Billie's homeland! She is from the Boston area...and Brooklyn is from Brooklyn. I don't follow baseball, but the cats have a serious Red Sox/Yankees rivalry.

Billie just had quite the taste testing buffet with her PM shot. I found 4 new varieties of LCish food with no eggs, fish, or other obvious allergens. She hated the first 3 but the 4th was a hit - Hound & Gatos lamb w/ duck liver - 3%. It's a hit with Brooklyn too. Actually, all the options were approved by Brooklyn. She is very easygoing when it comes to food.

Billie did some coughing tonight, which is a bummer of course, but she had a fairly normal poo!! Soft, but definitely not diarrhea. So, that's nice. Thanks for the poo vines!

I hope everyone is having a good night!

I've been too exhausted to visit this week but wanted to check in to see how Billie was doing. Maybe a little pumpkin and or probiotics might help with the diarrhea.
