Yesterday...

Yesterday, someone called the bank with one of my credit card numbers and changed the address on my account, then called back later to report both credit cards as lost. Fortunately, the bank called me for more information and I was able to change it back, but both cards have been cancelled and there's a hurricane on the way.

Years ago, I was traveling a lot for work and got another card for the airline perks, so I was able to use that to book a pet-friendly room 3 hours north for 9/8-11. (Though it might be more of a 6-hour drive on 9/08.) I've never traveled with the cats before, but I don't want to end up in a situation where we're ordered to evacuate and I have to leave them behind. They need to be crated, so I've ordered a playpen (to arrive tomorrow) and will get a sheet of vinyl to set under it. It won't be much fun for them... but at least they'll have room to stretch out.

If anyone has traveled with cats before and can think of something I've left something off this list, please let me know!

towels/cloths
gloves
paper towels
cleaner for bio-fluid stains
travel crate
pee pads
playpen (ETA 9/6)
litterbox
cat litter
scoop
grocery bags
trash bags
food/water bowls
water jug
canned food
spoons
insulin (R and L)
syringes
sharps container
cabergoline
methimazole
toys
treats
feliway
both cats
ALMOST FORGOT - TESTING SUPPLIES
and HC

I just bought a second playpen (and spent $9 to make sure I get it by 9/7). I was reading through reviews and saw a picture of how one person had connected 2 of them so beds/food could go in one and the litterbox could go in the other. It will be ironic if the storm direction/intensity changes before they arrive... but if we end up having to leave, I'm sure they'll be happy to have some extra room.

Added to the list:

Safety pins
Scratching post/board

I am not at home right now, but will look at my travelling list when I get there. In addition to Feliway, see if you can get Rescue Remedy for pets. Add beds and anything that smells like home.

Good plan to get away from it all. I hope it turns out to be nothing. :bighug:

Oh, before I forget, can you get Cerenia from the vet? Or see what they suggest for travel?

They've never experienced motion sickness. I've moved with them twice, a 3-hour drive each time. I put them together in a large dog crate lined with a towel and both times, they were a lot calmer/quieter than they are when I take them to the vet! And I do have 2 types of treats with natural calming agents.

Small insulated cooler and ice packs for the insulins for the car trip there and back and if the hotel room doesn't have a fridge. I'm assuming the hotel will have an ice machine.
All rooms have a mini fridge! :cat: I made sure of that before booking.

I don't know how bad things will get, but you might want copies of prescriptions. @LizzieInTexas found out her vet was closed after Harvey. Think about what you might need for a couple weeks after you return.

This. I went through Katrina. Have a Katrina cat I adopted in 2006 who got left behind by his previous people and I cannot stress enough the need for medical records, but especially RXs. I couldn't get any of mine for 5 months. It's usually not a worst case scenario but if things are closed long term you need to be prepared.

Just realized that there's also a chance I'll be stuck here with the cats if the streets start flooding before Friday morning. My car is almost 13 years old and if I drive through high water, the battery light comes on and the steering wheel locks up. Tomorrow I'll see if a rental car or a room for Thursday is possible.

Bring a small cooler and ice packs anyway.
Better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Medical records! Thanks, I just stuck them in the bag with food, syringes, lancets, and treats. I ordered 80 days of methimazole a few days ago; hopefully it will arrive in the next day or two. I also have 10 Levemir pens and 1.5 pens of Lantus left.

Oh, please be safe. Luckily I have actual prescription for all meds Gizmo takes. I have them scanned and saved on Google drive. I also emailed them to myself,

Honey/karo
Paper towels
Wash clothes
Food bowls/water bowls
*toppers to encourage eating

These are in my go pile. Disposable litter boxes (don't forget the litter) I purchased the silicon type (litter) for convince and cleanliness. Plus it is lighter.

OK, here is the document a member wrote that was a compilation of a bunch of suggestions she got on travelling.

Other random things I thought of, flashlights (in case power goes out), harness and leash. I got a tag made for Neko with my phone number and "diabetic" on it. Petsmart can do those quickly. Take a copy of their microchip number or tattoo number, whichever they have. Note the phone number and address of the closest ER vet.
  • Paper log book in case you don't have power.
  • Extra batteries for your BG monitor, plus a back up monitor if you have one. Lots of extra test strips, lancets. I planned for being away a lot longer than expected.
  • Febreeze for the car.
  • Supplements if he gets them. Those small packets of pumpkin from the pet store travel well.

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA) takes here kitty on road trips and is a good resource for travel info as well.

If there's any way possible for you to leave before the storm hits, that may be better than being trapped at home. I'd also pack the car in advance so you're not panicked and forget something.

Please stay safe and update us when you can.

I hope you and the kitties will stay out of harms way. Rusty has a "Road ID" with our name, contact numbers, his vet's contact, and the info. that he is diabetic and on insulin. You won't have time to get one from Road ID this time, but keep it in mind for the future. The small pet ID (called the "scout") fits on a cat's collar.
I think your list and the other suggestions you have received are first rate. I would only add that newspaper works as well as, or even better than, pee pads. You can simply tear off the soiled part and dispose of it easily. Take along some of the small dog-poop bags that people carry when they walk their dogs. They are great for collecting cat pee from the litterbox and they really cancel out any odor.

Stay safe!
