Yesterday's flat yellow day, AMPS not considering

Good Tuesday to all in LL. Zener had some improved appy last night, then had a slow yellow slide until this morning. I think the "kitties are starving in the world" suggestion from Tricia and Cinco did the appy trick. ;-) We had to add a few dollops of high carb fuds to get him started in the early parts of the evening cycle, so I suspect we are seeing the after effects of that at mid-cycle today. Tummy massage sure helps when his little tummy gets so tight and bloated and he isn't interested in eating. Fluids coming up later this afternoon.

Is anyone having trouble getting the DEHP-free subQ fluids in the US? There appears to be a shortage in the US and my usual source, ThrivingPets.com, has none right now. I did some searching and the few places that do have the fluids do not have the DEHP ones, and you have to order 12 bags. We can get some from our vet in the meantime. Any suggestions from those with kitties on fluids?

I am getting organized to pack for Germany in bits and pieces. No suitcase until everything is ready to go in, and all have to be above pee level. Thanks Julie and all for keeping an eye on Liz and Zener while I am away. I leave tomorrow afternoon and return Monday evening . It's a short trip this time = 5 darks.

Wishing all a calm and drama free Tuesday,
anne

We started fluids after the shortage began, so we've never been able to get DEHP free bags. This is from Tanya's site:

The plastic of some fluid bags contain a chemical called DEHP, which softens the bags. Some people prefer not to use bags containing DEHP because they are concerned that some of the DEHP may leach into the fluids themselves, especially if the bag is warmed before use.

Health Canada mentions that studies into the effect of DEHP on mice and rats found that they developed liver tumours, but this was after they were fed DEHP in high doses. I am not aware of any studies into the effect of DEHP on cats. The US Food & Drug Administration has concluded that "there is little or no risk posed by patient exposure to the amount of DEHP released from PVC IV bags during the infusion of crystalloid fluids (e.g., normal saline, D5W, Ringer's Lactate)".

I would probably avoid DEHP bags myself if I could find an alternative. I understand that the B Braun, Baxter and Hospira brands in the USA offer DEHP-free bags which cost around $0.50 a bag more. As at June 2014 it was virtually impossible to obtain DEHP-free fluids in the USA because of supply problems, and I know some people are very concerned about this. Personally, if I couldn't find or afford DEHP-free bags, it is not something I would lose sleep over - in my opinion, it is more important that a cat who needs fluids receives them.

She also lists a wide variety of sources. We got ours from Valley Vets last time...at that point, they were the cheapest we could find.

Sending appy vines...keep eating, Z - it's good for you!! Have a safe trip, Anne!

Sending appy vines to Zener. I hope his tummy feels better this evening. Sending safe travel prayers for Anne.

Uh, wrong way Z-man. How about turning around nice and slow.

Have you checked w/ you local Walgreens or Costco for the Ringers? Marje said she gets hers from Walgreens.

Just caught up on the condo from yesterday. Have a great trip, Anne. I went to Berlin for a weekend when I was studying in Copenhagen. The wall was still up and the train was stopped in the middle of the night for passport check. There was a man removed from the train! That woke us up. When we were going into Berlin they found a "problem" w/ one of my friends passport, something about the spelling of his middle name. He was allowed into Berlin, but we had to spend half the weekend tracking down the American Consul in is suburban home to get it fixed before he could leave. I found the bombed out buildings a sobering reminder, but very apropos, especially the church right in the center of downtown.

I'm glad you guys found a source. This shortage has driven me crazy...I can't stand hearing how others can get them for $22 a case and I can't get them around here at all - and the cheapest online is far more than $22 per case. But what can ya do? Kitty's gotta have the juice....

BTW... DON'T order the lines from Valley Vet! I got them there...they were way expensive, but even worse, they leaked! Stick with Thriving Pets for the lines (I hope I'm not too late with that tidbit!)

Drat, too late.... we can always send them back!

Sorry I didn't think of it sooner. Maybe you'll have better luck than we did. We used one line then sent the rest back and reordered from Thriving Pets. As long as you return them within 30 days, I think you'll get a full refund. We didn't....had to pay a restocking fee.

Hi guys,
I hope you are able to get the fluids in the safe bags. Sorry I can't add to that conversation. Z Man and Tillie, try to help out MamaLizBean for the next 5 days. She needs you to be extra fine kitties!

Safe trip, Anne,
How exciting to be staying in the Potsdamer Platz, the new center of Berlin. When we lived there it was just over the border in East Berlin. And in West Berlin in the early 1960s they built the new Philharmonic hall adjacent to Potsdamer Platz (which, as I recall, was sort of a no-man's land). This "gesture" was not lost on the powers that be in East Berlin!
Interesting on Ann's story of her visit to Berlin during the DDR era. A friend of ours was grilled for hours at the Friedrichstrasse checkpoint because he had bought an expensive art book on the black market and couldn't produce a receipt for changing that much money. Finally they let him go, but confiscated his book!
Have you seen the 2006 German movie "The Lives of Others"? It is a sobering and accurate picture of life in East Berlin during the DDR era. You can rent it on Netflix.

Anyway, have a great trip and a good 25-year celebration. Edward and I like to equate Berlin with New York: both have fantastic energy.

I read the condo to both kitties so now they know their instructions. Fortunately, Z-man has excellent appy today, so it makes it a bit easier to be leaving. Of course, his appy could change at any minute.

Funny, "the new center of Berlin" is part of the advertising for the Scandic hotel where we are staying and all the meetings are taking place. There is a bit of history in the story of the hotel, "formerly in 'no man's land". And yes, we have seen "The Lives of Others". We watched it in our 2nd year German class, then I have watched it two or three other times. One of my top five movies of all times.

@Amy & Trixie - thanks for the reminder on the 30-day returns. We had some of the wrong size of syringes from American Diabetes Wholesale. I usually order 3 boxes at a time and don't always check them closely when they arrive. When we finally opened a box, they were the wrong size and we had passed the return deadline. Drat! Now, I always check.

@Ann & Tess - we don't have Costco in our small town, wish we did! We do have Walgreens but the staff at the one closest to us are so unpleasant to deal with we don't shop there anymore. And just like any small town, we don't want to drive "all the way across town" to the other one. Amazing the adventures many here in LL have had in Berlin. It will be my first visit. I appreciate the sobering reminders of that time in history, and hope to have a little time to see a bit of it.

@carla - thanks for the appy vines and safe travel assistance! Z's tummy is better today.

Looks like he is coming down again, and slowly. How nice!

Anne
