9.21.24 Pepper Hypo

Not sure what to do. Pepper went into hunting mode and was completely disoriented earlier today. Did a test and she was 3.9mmol/L at 5:20pm UK time. Gave honey. 12.2 mmol/L at 6:08pm. 14.3mmol/L at 9:03pm which is when we should have injected 2.5 units of Lantus. However we didn't because we weren't t sure if we should and the vet was closed. We have not previously done home testing due to non compliant puss, but she let us today so we have only ever gone off what the vet said previously. However she had a similar going into hunting mode incident about 3 weeks ago. Then the vet was open and we rushed her in, but they never made the connection that it might be a hypo so hence didn't test her despite the fact that reading online now, going into hunting mode is listed on at least one site as a symptom of a hypo. So what should I do? Have I done right or wrong in not giving her her Lantus insulin shot this evening? She would also be due another in the morning before our vet opens and I am able to ask professional advice. What do I do in the morning?

I will tag a couple of the people that help me. @Wendy&Neko and @tiffmaxee @Bandit's Mom There are others. I just cant think of them at the moment. I know its late there but hopefully someone will respond by morning. It looks like the BG came up nicely over that 3 1/2 hour period. I would try to get a test before you give the shot in the morning tho.

Oh thank you so much for responding. It makes me feel not so alone. I am going to bed now and will test in morning. I will check to see if anyone else replies if I wake in night. My readings were taken with a cat monitor not a human one. I don't have a human monitor. Mine is an AlphaTrak3 monitor

Information we need about Pepper
This is where you can set up what we call your signature, it's at the end of everyone's post in gray letters. Just tap on your name up top then tap on signature and add this information. You will link it to your spreadsheet

  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Bexacat or Senvelgo (if applicable) and dates
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

Thank you!

If you can set up our spreadsheet where we track our kitties BG that would be helpful, the link will also explain how to use it, it's very easy

First of all, we really do need to know a bit more information. For example, knowing you are using a pet meter may change what suggestions we give, so it's one of the items we'd like to see in your signature. On both of those types of meters, 3.9 (70) is not considered hypo but rather lower normal blood sugar numbers. We also have a couple dosing methods we use to determine how to change the dose. Based on a few things, the type of diet being one of them, you can choose or other of the dosing methods. One dosing method says you should reduce the dose to 2.25 units with a 3.9, the other dosing method would tell you to stay with the same dose.

Whether or not you should have shot also depends on a few things. Most important, when Pepper was diagnosed, did the vet mention DKA or diabetic ketoacidosis? Were ketones present? If yes to either, it becomes even more important to make sure she gets insulin.

Can anyone please tell me what this means to put in my signature:
  • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
I don't know what TR or SLGS is?

Sorry for my ignorance over this

They are the 2 different dosing methods to choose from. Both will tell you when an increase or decrease is needed. Please read the yellow sticky here and when you get your spreadsheet set up you will also put it at the top of your spreadsheet along with Date of diagnosis Insulin you use the Tr or SLGS method and the meter you are using , All this will be up at the top of the spreadsheet
Here is the link so you can read about it

If you are feeding any dry food at all then you can only follow SLGS method

I see in your signature you have Dry Food , Pepper won't eat wet food ?
@ShannonRiver

This link you can read all about Lantus here , please readhttps://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/forums/lantus-levemir-biosimilars.9/ all the yellow stickys you see there

She has 1- 2 weebox lick treats a day which is generally what is needed to bribe her into having her injections at the moment. These are wet. She will eat these and eat them straight down. But Pepper is a grazer. She will not eat food when it is put down for her (wet or dry and this includes most treats). And without going into too much detail, the humans that live in the house, mean I cannot leave wet food down. The vet said to leave her on dry food as she has never had wet food and grazing was good, even though wet food might help with diabetes. Pepper does always drink water with her kibble though. Pepper is unusually skinny for a diabetic cat. She has always been very petite, so when she got ill, diabetes wasn't really on anyone's radar.

Thanks for all your information.

Also what does AMPS and PMPS mean for the readings?

Thanks. The spreadsheet is going to take a little. I can't really even look at it till the weekend, although my monitor app is storing the readings we get. We are waiting for some results back from the vet at the minute as well. I can't remember what it was called but a blood test that kind of gives an average glucose over the last 3 weeks. But that isn't going to help us with this strange anomaly of low readings at night and high in a morning.

To be honest it was as much the google account. I do have a google account. But for complicated reasons I think I would have to set up another to share the line to the spreadsheet.
But the spreadsheet itself would save me some time trying to figure it out, so thanks so much for your help. All readings are in mmol/L
