9/2 Esse AMPS 124 (Contour)

Previous post!

Esse saw me brag about my beautiful Libre cover placement and thought, "would be a shame if something happened to that..." (twirling a nonexistent mustache menacingly).

To summarize my exciting weekend--
Friday (last post): Esse manages to lift up his shirt and bite at the Libre, it fails. No problem, it's day 13 and we were planning to replace it anyway. We place a new one.
Saturday: Sam flies out very early for a weekend trip.
Sunday: I wake up at 6am to the sound of Esse biting his NEW Libre *while laying directly on top of me*. (He has no shame!) So it failed too. I managed to get at least the required pre-shot tests solo. Sam gets back around midnight.
Monday: Now that we're both home, we can place a new Libre again. The last one we have on hand. And... it won't turn on. The application went fine, totally normal, but it wouldn't scan. So I think this one was just a dud. And of course it's a holiday, so the vet and the pharmacy are closed.

Just a terrible streak of bad luck! Fingers crossed we can get in touch with the vet today to get a refill for his prescription. We'll have to try out some new methods of Libre protection, maybe vet wrap + shirt?

Hi Lauren,
Ok, first of all you have the most handsome criminal! He needs to be less adorable to commit such crimes!

Secondly, please have your vet write a script so that you can renew the Libre 2 or 4 at a time, as needed with refills for the year.
I explained to my vet that the Libre can fail for any given reason (or be pulled off by a criminal cat) so we need access at all times.

I always have (minimum of 6 on hand, but I am crazy)....just because (you never know).
DO report the one that failed for no good reason and have Abbott send a replacement (but NEVER say it's for a pet, always a human!!)

Do you think you could manage to put one on him by yourself? (either you and or Sam?)

Hard to believe but I do it solo with no help (sometimes at 2 am when my house is asleep).
And Ivy is a crazy cat, but she tolerates Libre installation with no issues (anti jinx).

You guys have a great system down. Just looking for options in case of an emergency!!

WIshing you lots of luck with the next one and safe surfing, Esse, behave!! 🌊🏄‍♂️😻

Oh my goodness, Esse! What a sneaky boy… but almost not really because you were at the scene of the crime and he had no shame!

Glad you were able to get a handheld test. Hope you can get another prescription fast and then like Staci said, maybe a few back-up ones too.

Hope Esse stays safe and calm tonight 🤗😻

Aww he just thinks the Libre's are new toys. He's cute!

Yes, this weekend we used numbers 5 and 6 from the set of six we got a while ago. There were no refills on the script--we are asking for that with our next prescription, although I also asked for it when I got our previous prescription and she didn't (or forgot to) write that in.
You were the one who initially suggested having multiples on hand when we switched to the Libre in June and had that issue with the vet applying them. So I definitely have not forgotten your advice, and you were the reason we got six last time. Even if the one we applied on Friday (#5) had not been damaged and was still going strong, I would be doing the same exact thing this week trying to get ahold of the vet and get over to Costco. It's just really bad timing, if this had happened at any time in the last couple months it would have been no big deal. As it is, it was a holiday weekend and these last two devices lasted 3 days instead of 30 days.

Sorry if it seemed like this post was whiny or requesting advice, it wasn't meant that way, was just sharing our ~adventures~ and also keep folks updated in case they saw our spreadsheet and realized we weren't using the Libre for a few days. I really think we've got the situation in hand, we have learned so much previously from everyone on the forum and were (mostly) prepared for the situation. The lesson is just to start the refill process when you have TWO devices left, not one. I hope others reading learn from your advice and my mistake, though!

DO report the one that failed for no good reason and have Abbott send a replacement (but NEVER say it's for a pet, always a human!!)
Yup, already submitted the report. This will be our second time doing that process since we also did it for one of the ones the vet applied poorly.

Do you think you could manage to put one on him by yourself? (either you and or Sam?)
I'm sure we'd give it a go if it were an emergency, but really it takes one of us to do the actual skin prep/application and the other person to keep him corralled onto the counter and distracted with treats. If Sam had been out of town longer I would have sooner recruited a friend to come help than try to do it on my own and risk applying it poorly. He's just not that nice of a cat, lol. I'm glad you've had more success.

I totally understand Lauren. You and Sam are doing a wonderful job with Esse.
I hope you don’t think I was being critical in any was. I promise I was not 💞

It’s a learning curve dealing with all of this, plus the Libre.
I just try to share (mostly my mistakes) in hopes I can save newer members from some aggravation and some of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I wish I’d had someone who had warned me or given me tips, especially in the beginning.
I felt very alone and I had to figure it all out myself, which was really difficult. There were really no Libre users here offering any advice.
In fact I was constantly encouraged to ditch the Libre (if only Ivy would allow me to do so, I would’ve done it a long time ago.)

And my vets were of no help at all. So, I spent an incredible amount of time researching online, trying to find videos, information, just trying to figure it all out, and it was complete trial and error.
In fact, I submitted so many failed Libres that Abbott cut me off and wouldn’t replace anymore last year 😩

Anyway, keep doing what you’re doing because you’re doing just a great job and I hope as he continues to do well ❤️‍🩹💞❤️‍🩹💞
