Looking at his spreadsheet, he's still roller coastering. I had him to the vet a couple of weeks ago, just to check kidney values, and they did a senior panel plus fructosamine -- it was 434. The vet was going to contact the diabetes specialist at Texas A&M again, but figured we would be told he's an 18 year old diabetic cat, what do you want?

I'm feeding the same food as always, at the same time, and the same amounts. He basically licks the "juice" from the food and walks away. I usually take his food back to the bedroom - he'll eat better there (away from the bullies) and I give him his shot at that time.

He's been back on insulin since February, and we're no closer to stabilizing his numbers than we were back then. I'd increase his dose if he didn't take those nose-dives.

Is he bouncing?? I've tried everything I can think of -- we tried 3 shots a day, 4 shots a day, I've given him a drop when he's high at +7 (to hopefully keep him from going too high by +12) -- the vet says the insulin just doesn't seem to be lasting for him (that's why we've tried a bunch of stuff). He did mention adding another insulin in between, but, honestly, I really don't want to try to juggle 2 insulin schedules. And I do this by myself, because, while my husband will occasionally test Chuck, he's not at all comfortable giving him a shot or even figuring out how much to give, based on previous numbers.

I know you might not want to consider changing insulins again. But you might want to talk to nckitties3 (Debbie & Lucian) over in Relaxed Lantus. She switched Lucian to Levimir a while ago from Lantus, and is getting much better results.

I don't mind switching to a new insulin, I just don't want to add another insulin on top of the ProZinc... I'll check Lucian's spreadsheet... Thanks!

Hello,

I'll second a switch to Levemir. My Pudge (13 y/o male) went into his 2nd remission on Levemir (some 4 months ago). His first was on ProZinc (about 5 - 6 months of ProZinc followed by a remission of around 1 year) where he created a very striking rainbow of colors :(. He is very carb sensitive & did best on 3 - 4% or less of carbs & very frequent small meals. I didn't really believe that he would reach a 2nd remission. He did after a very brief stint on Levemir (I was out of Pro Zinc but had Levemir available stat). His curves were much gentler while on Levemir. Have you tried adding crumbs of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw meals on top of Chuck's food? My Pudge loves them, though thoroughly detests if reconstituted with water. I know that you're very experienced with FD.
Best wishes to you & Chuck,
Sophie

I'd agree with the vet. Something that lasts longer may work better. And with either Lantus or Levemir, you stick to the dose, no adjusting on the fly, barring unexpected lows.

Alternatively, take a look at these table diagrams to see what you think about some of the ideas. You've done several of them already, but the later pages may have some ideas for you.

I have a vial of Lantus that we were using back from February to May, when we started ProZinc. It's been refrigerated the entire time -- do you think it's still good? I'll check for "floaties," but I'd like to avoid buying a new one if possible. I guess if I don't see floaties, I can always try and see what he does.

We started with Lantus back in 2008 and I was able to get him OTJ in about 8 weeks from starting. Of course, the vet induced hypo probably helped a bit with that <smile!>... I just don't think the ProZinc is helping him at all. He was almost 500 AMPS this morning, dropped to just below renal threshold by about +3, but at +7 he was around 275. He can throw those higher numbers, get the same amount of insulin, and by +5-+7, he can be below 100. He can also throw those higher numbers and never drop below renal threshold.

Can you use U40 syringes with U100 insulin? I know we can go the other way, using U100 syringes with the U40 insulin. I don't currently have any U100 syringes...

U-40 insulin has 40 units per mL
U-100 insulin has 100 units per mL, so it is 2.5 times stronger.

Multiply the U-40 syringe mark by 2.5 to get the dose of U-100 insulin the mark indicates.
mark 1 on U-40 syringe = 2.5 U-100 insulin
mark 2 on U-40 syringe = 5.0 U-100 insulin

You can see from BJM's calculations that you can't get small doses of a U100 insulin in the U40 syringes. A box of 100 Relion U100 3/10 cc syringes at Wal-mart will cost you around $13.
