9/12 - Stoney (Diarrhea & potential vomiting?)

Long time no post! Stoney has been doing wonderful with his BG #s for the past month or so.

On Thursday, I woke up and saw that someone had vomited their breakfast. I don’t know which cat it was, we have 3, so I went on with my day. Then yesterday, it happened again while I was out of the house. I just watched Stoney go to the restroom and it is very runny, which leads me to believe that the vomits we’re from Stoney.

Is there anything that I can do to help that won’t mess with these good #’s we’re in?

Editing to add that there has been no change in his food. He is still on FF classic pates. He is not acting any different. Still running around and playing with his siblings as usual.

As for the diarrhea and vomiting, hopefully it is just a temporary condition. How many times has it happened? Are you still testing for ketones to make sure they’re low? I would be very surprised if they weren’t low, but it would make me feel better to know.
 
If you have Cerenia on hand, you can try that. I wouldn’t use it unless it’s repeated vomiting.

Slippery Elm Bark is very soothing for the entire GI tract.

Fiber like freeze dried pumpkin, Beech Nut Squash, Psyllium seed husk (like plain Metamucil) can sometimes help with diarrhea.

What I find to work really well for diarrhea is S. Boulardii. Half a capsule mixed into food twice a day is excellent. If it doesn’t stop though then you already know a vet visit is in order. They may prescribe Cerenia for vomiting and a shot course of Metronidazole for diarrhea. Metro (Flagyl) works quickly.

If my assumption is correct that it is him who is vomiting, it has only happened twice but it has been undigested food both times. 😩 As for the diarrhea, that has happened twice now (literally just happened and came to check my thread, LOL). Honestly, I have not checked his ketones since July 17th. 😳 You gave me the idea to check them since it’s time for his pre-shot. PMPS is 95 with ketones of 0.2!

We do have Zofran for him on hand, I will try that if he vomits again. Thankfully, he hasn’t done that today. 🤞

Do you think it would make his numbers soar if I give him a little bit of 100% pumpkin puree? I have some on hand… We really have never dealt with kitty diarrhea before in the 7 years we’ve had cats! I will put in a call to the vet on Monday morning if this continues….

I have spoken too soon… he just threw up again but it was mostly bile. I am going to go ahead and give him a Zofran.

How much Metamucil would you recommend that I put in his +2 snack? That is the best option I can get tonight from your list!

No. That’s the wrong kind of Metamucil and it’s not the psyllium husk kind. Don’t give him that. Inulin is a highly fermentable, prebiotic soluble fiber. It may cause gas, bloating, abdominal discomfort, or worsen diarrhea.

A small amount of unsweetened unflavored pumpkin puree is okay. It usually doesn’t raise BG. Every cat is different though. But it won’t last long. I keep plain freeze dried pumpkin on hand to mix in food at times. Sweet potato and squash are also okay.

Okay I am going to order the freeze dried pumpkin! He LOVES his freeze dried chicken treats. We’ll monitor him overnight and tomorrow and see if there are any changes. The boy still wants to eat!
 
I will be calling our vet first thing tomorrow morning. He just had diarrhea again and there was the tiniest bit of blood. I read online that it could be irritation. I am hoping they can get him in tomorrow if there is an opening.

I just gave him a small snack with a bit of pumpkin and lots of water to help keep him hydrated. I feel bad for him. He has diarrhea but looks like he is struggling a bit to get it out. I’m hoping it’s just minor irritation.

Well, if the blood is red then it’s not unusual to have that occur from a bit of intestinal irritation. But if he’s struggling to go, then it could actually be constipation where a little bit of diarrhea is escaping around the hard stool. A vet should be able to help distinguish between the two. I am glad you gave a little pumpkin. It can’t hurt. Is his appetite still good? If it is then it probably isn’t constipation.

Appetite is still good… we are headed to the emergency vet now. He went pee normally, and had pretty much all liquid stool with blood. I took a photo with flash and it looks darker than it was in person. I’m not going to include that here, but, we scooped it and are bringing it with us…. I’m nervous he may have eaten something….
 
We are headed back from the emergency vet now…. I’ve been awake for 24 hours. 😴

Bloodwork looked great. His BG was at 211 when they took it. X-rays were done and sent to radiology. They stated that there looks to be some small foreign particulates. They gave him sub q fluids to help with the dehydration. He did have an accident while we were there and there was a small amount of blood. They also did give us the Metronidazole in pill form. As soon as we get home, we will test, feed, shoot, and give the Metronidazole. Then, we are taking a good ole nap. They said that it should pass and to follow up in about 24 hours unless something changes drastically

Editing to add: is there anything we can use on his bum that will help with it being raw? It looks so uncomfortable.
