Hello,

Djoko has not been eating a lot in the past few days. He seems hungry but cannot touch his food. Yesterday afternoon, he has diarhee. He has been having multiple diarrheas for 24 hours in large quantity.
He has been eaten a bit and drinking water but it seems that as soon as he puts something in his body, he cannot keep it. Otherwise, he is quiet but acts fine e.g. able to jump on the bed for instance.
I gave him Gapapentin (2 X0.5) last night and today around 2PM (12 hours apart).
If possible, due to the Covid19 and the cost, I would like to avoid going to the vet. I understand that if he keeps going, he may become dehysdrated. He received insulin this morning because he was at 29, but I don't think I will be able to give him his shot today due to his poor appetite.

It looks like a flare-up of pancreatits. I tested for ketones and it came back negative.

Should I stop giving him food for a bit?
Any advice?

Thanks,
Marjorie

Do you have any antinausea medication such as cerenia or ondansetron? If he seems hungry but won’t eat, that sounds like nausea. can you ring the vet, explain the symptoms and get them to let you pick up some antinausea medication if you don’t have any?

For the diarrhoea you could try giving cooked mashed pumpkin. It is very good for diarrhoea. If you can’t buy some in a can ( it needs to have nothing else added except pumpkin), you can make your own. It is simple. Just cook some pumpkin in water until soft. Nothing else added. Then drain well, mash well. Give 1/2 teaspoon a couple of times a day in food to start with and increase as needed up to a teaspoon. My cats eat it fine and seem to not notice it is there.
You can freeze the rest of the pumpkin in ice cube trays and use as needed
You can also give a probiotic such as S. Boulardii. It should work within 2 days. Brands are ReNew and Floraster and are available on Amazon. Start with 1/4 cap mixed in canned food twice a day and you can increase to 1/2 cap twice a day.

well done testing for ketones. While he is like this keep testing daily.

Hello,
I tried to ring the vet but not in today. I wanted to get some meds. They will ask me to come in and it takes forever when you get there (spent 5 hrs last time) so this is not great.
It looks like pancreatits again (although I am not a vet). Forgot to say he vomitted twice.

I will try to get a pumpkin can. Thank you. I hope he will eat it.
Poor Djoko :(

Hi Marj, I see you said the following

. He is not on Lantus since February 17 and started on ProZinc.
You might want to note that on your spreadsheet, and your signature, just so when you ask for hello they know what insulin he is on

I think it is in my SS already. Isn't?
He has been on ProZinc for a month so not sure it is relevant to put the emphasis on this.

It could be pancreatitis. Is there anywhere else you can get some antinausea medications such as another vet or ER?
If he has vomiting and diarrhoea and not wanting to eat, that is of concern and needs attention.

I called back and they said they would rather to wait for the vet on file for anti nausea but they will prepare pro biotics.
The vet said to give him rice and boiled ground beef or chicken.
I will try them again..

I think that is crazy. Not to give a diabetic cat that has vomiting and diarrhoea and a history of pancreatitis some antinausea meds is irresponsible. I would persist and insist on having the antinausea meds today. Make a fuss. Will they give you some if you take him into see them?

Rice is high carb so will raise the BG levels so just be aware if that.
Do you have any pumpkin at home?
If you can’t get canned, the fresh pumpkin is very simple to make and takes only 5 minutes. If you could slow down the diarrhoea that would help.

Just remove the Lantus from the signature. That would make it clearer.
Hey there Bron, now I'm really confused look, the way she just changed it on her signature, it looks like her cat was only on prozinc from

. (ProZin Jan. 18, 20 to Feb 17,20) this is what she just added
so is her cat on lantus or prozinc , didn't want to make a big deal about thus, just looking out for her cat, so that members can give her the correct advice
We are questioning the same thing lol
Only reason I picked it up was because of what she wrote on her profile under information where it says About @Bron and Sheba (GA)

If you can order it online, there's a specific probiotic that helps with diarrhea, S. boulardii. You would start with 1/4 of a capsule twice a day mixed into food. If Djoko isn't eating, dissolve it in a bit of water and syringe it into his mouth but. you'll need a syringe that doesn't have a needle at the tip

@Diane Tyler's Mom Yes the info in the profile does indicate Djoko is on Prozinc, but I think Marj has just not updated it since she went back to Lantus.
I've been helping her and have always thought she was on Lantus so was a bit alarmed that I'd missed she had swapped to Prozinc.
Hopefully she will clarify soon.

They don't feel comfortable. They want me to check in and I can't. I know it is silly given that it would be the fourth time since Jan. 18.2020. It is all over his file but you know, it can be a business.

We are on Lantus. Prozinc lasted a month at the beginning.
They said they could leave us pro biotic but no other meds without consultation..
My bf tried to get pumpkin at the grocery store in a can but could not find any. I am leaning towards boil him some ground beef and add a bit of rice water so that it does not spike his BGL. He is weak so he needs to eat something and FF have fat so not sure it is the best diet for him today. They will probably give them to me if I go but that means 500$ minimum because they will want to test for keto and get him some fluids plus consultation and I can't afford that these days (COVID19 and job security is not guaranteed).
I will go get the probiotic Floraster at the vet.

He vomitted twice last night and it has been diarrhea only. Let's hope it stays like that.
He urinated one time today. I guess this is due to dehydration. If he is not better tomorrow, I will go to the vet. Normally, pancreatits episodes last 24-48 hours.

What about insulin? If he eats some ground boiled beef, could I give him his insulin?
He is about 4-5 kilos, how much beef would he need so that I can give him his shot?
Merci

How long until insulin is due?
Cats that are fasting for surgery are given a 1/2 dose so you could give at least that.
Try and get him to eat what you can then post and ask for advice.
Try putting some Parmesan cheese on top of the food to tempt him.
Did you manage to get some pumpkin mash?
Try and get some extra fluids into him as well, especially if you think he is dehydrated..
Do you have honey and high carb food in case you need it if he drops low ...then you could rub some on his gums.
I see you give him temptations that look as if they are high carb.
At this point I would give him anything to eat that he will eat even if it is high carb...we need him to eat.

Insulin was due 15 minutes ago. He is eating boiled ground beef now.
No pumpkin no. We tried to buy some for ourselves not a long time ago and it was very difficult to find it at the grocery store.
I do have maple syrup and temptations if he goes low yes.
Yes I agree. He ate the first portion of ground beef in 20 secondes! I will give him more! Thank you very much.

No problem! DJoko has eaten. Hopefully he won't vomit / have diarrhea during the night.
Fingers and paws crossed.
Can you update the SS please Marj and put in the dose you gave, also put in any BGs you get this cycle please? Thanks.
I'd get a + 2 as the PMPS was a bit lower than normal.
