So Checkers ledt for Kelowna on Friday afternoon to stay with my sister in law while I go away on vacation. I noticed a day before his appetite wasn't as good as it usually was and heard him try to cough up a hairball (or so I thought). So I asked my sister in law to keep an I on that. When they arrived Friday he at fine. But Saturday and this morning he wasn't eating at all. So they took him to the 24hr vet clinic.

They did an ultrasound and found fluid in the lungs. So they are going to drain his lungs and keep him over night and run some tests:

CBC
Electrolyte/PCV
Cytology (on the fluid?)

They also want to do an xray, should they run the other tests first?

Sending healing vines for Checkers and these for you.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: Your sister did the right thing taking him to the 24 hours vet. Tagging @Jodey&Eddie&Blue who lives in Kelowna and might have ideas on the best vet to look at this. Unfortunately the closest cardiology vet is in Langley at Boundary Bay vet. And ideally he'd get a cardio vet to check him out, possibly do an echocardiogram.

Yes on the xray and cytology on the fluid. Can you find out how much they drained? The losing appetite (nausea) and coughing unfortunately sound all too familiar. He might need to go on Lasix, so checking his kidney values (Chemistry BW) might be a good idea unless you have recent ones. Lasix (removes fluid) can be hard on kidneys. Another possible b/w test is the CardioPet BNP which tests heart function and should be quicker results (though not as thorough) as a echo.

Your SIL will probably want to get ondansetron for nausea, not sure how easy Checkers will be to pill for her. You can also get injectable version, but it's harder to come by.

They will do the draining tonight. He kad is kidney values done about a year ago and they were good. When they checked his vitals they were all good.

He is at Fairfield animal hospital. So it is likely his heart? A friend of mine went to the cardiologist for her cat and she had to wait months to get in:(.
Checkers used to be my sister in laws cat so she will take very good care of him.

He is surprisingly easy to pill.

Heart is one option with the coughing and fluid. And what my experience is with Neko and one other kitty. But there is another C option and hence the cytology. There is also an option I think not likely, which is accident, hard impact. At least those are the options the ER vet talked to me about with Neko and her fluid in lungs episode.

There used to be a great cardio vet at Canada West, who was Neko's cardio vet, but he moved back to Italy. :( With emergency, we got in to see him in a few days.

Thank goodness for easy to pill cat! Lasix, if needed, also comes in liquid. Neko was NOT easy to pill.

So he is also getting a Pro-BNP, that is the cardiac test? Will he also need an echo. The cytology on the fluid, I assume is for cancer?

Either, heart problems or cancer don't seem like very good possibilities. Could there be anything with a better prognosis, I am trying to be hopeful.

Yes, the Cardio Pet ProBNP is the heart test. Depending what it says, he may or may not need an echo. Yes, big C meant cancer. :( Would be surprising if suddenly that with no other symptoms. Heart is more manageable. There may be other options, the impact was one the ER vet mentioned to me with Neko. Turns out hers was heart related, none of the above mentioned. She had fluid on the heart which drained into the lungs when they removed it from the heart. Vet error. Not relevant to checkers.

I don't know what all the possibilities are, just mentioning what was told me. The ER vet had Neko's background cause she had just been at the clinic that day for the fluids removal and her IM vet and cardio vet worked there.

I'm just coming in on this, Chris. Is Checkers still in the clinic. Fairfield is the best place ever. Please if you have any concerns phone them. They are first-rate communicators.

As Wendy has pointed out there is no cardiologist here in the Okanagan. But for IM concerns, please ask them to call upon Hans Gelens. He's often old school but he's reliable and able to speak to an IM issues. I believe they can do ultrasound at Fairfield. Please if you want, I'll speak with your sister and if I can lend a hand, I will certainly do so.

Gosh, all good thoughts for the best possible outcome here. I hope Checkers is ok.

So the vet just called me and said the xray showed small round spots around his lungs. So it is metastatic cancer. My brother and sister in law have gone back to the hospital to put him to sleep.

{{{{Chris and your sister in law}}}}.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: I am so sorry for the news. And sorry that you couldn't be there. Checkers was with someone he knew and loved him. Fly free Checkers. cat_wings>o
