Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62

Wow...Mocha!! 62??? :o
Well, shoot low to stay low is the saying, right?? Good luck today Devon....will be watching for your +1 and others throughout the day. Good thing you have had so much practice with this,eh? Rinse, lather, repeat.... Looking great Mocha girl!!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

well she is on her way up that's for sure ... I made a post on health about mocha and twix .. both are suffering from skin problems, each unique to themselves .. I don't know what to do for either of them  Mocha is starting to lick herself raw in her throat area so I've been trying to keep a cool washcloth nearby and help cool her down .. her skin is bright red under her fur .. I don't know what's causing it but Im thinking allergic reaction to her plastic autofeeder? Tried putting vitamin E oil on it which caused some of her scabs to come loose and come out of her fur, but the vitamin E is sticky and mocha doesn't like it so she licks and licks and licks at it and now it looks like she is losing her fur ..

can't afford a vet visit and even if we could, would the vet do a steroid shot?? most likely .. that's what she gives twix for her rodent ulcers and allergies on her ears .. don't know what to do ...

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

so many kitties seem to be allergic to the automat, hmm even my Tray has been scratching his neck area alot lately. I even checked him for fleas but I never thought it might be the plastic. Hope your cats come through okay and you get some advice.

These numbers are fantastic though, go Mocha!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Very nice amps - and yes on the shoot low to stay low. WOW - great start.

wish I could help on the skin thing - just no clue. Hope you can figure out what is causing it.

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Nice AMPS, I hope mocha stays low for you today! Have you tried an antihistimine for the allergy thing? Maybe check with the vet on that...I have no experience with it, just a thought.

I don't have an automatic feeder, looking at getting one though. Would it be possible to put some sort of coating (nail polish?) on the area she comes in contact with?

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Green AMPS!!! Nice job Mocha!!! Hope that +1 is just a food spike and you don't go any higher!!

Wish I could help with the allergy thing...as you know, I have the same rodent ulcer issue with Thunder. He got the depo shot a few weeks ago and now I'm giving him cyclosporin. Its helping, but takes a while to kick in. Hope you are able to figure something else out with the plastic feeder, I'm about to get a new one that I plan on using daily and I'm already worried about having issues with it. I use stainless steel dishes for them now, but won't be able to do anything about what the feeder is made out of.

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

someone mentioned on the health board an OTC medication .. I don't know if that is ok to use without verifying what the actual problem is though? Going to the vets at this point is not an option for us financially and calling the vet results in nothing but them wanting us to take our cats in, they do not do over the phone advice. Last weekend me and peter talked about him possibly taking apart out autofeeder, and using the motor out of it and him making a new feeder out of wood and just setting stainless steel bowls on a rotating piece of wood. I can't really explain it because honestly Im not sure how he intends to do it but ... we have to figure something out .. we did buy some aluminum tape however to cover up the actual part her neck is rubbing on but I don't feel as though it's food safe for us to cover the feeder itself and I can't seem to find any bowls that fit into those molded spots for food yet ..

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Devon, I give Tinkles 1/2 of a 4mg chlortab (generic chlor-trimeton) BID for his allergies every day. I ok'ed it with our vet, they said I could give up to 1 tab BID. I don't know if weight is taken into account for dosing, Tinkles weighs 13lb.

I did give it without checking with the vet at first because they were closed...I called the next day. I did research it on the net first. It appears to be a commonly used, relatively safe med for cats from what I found.

I obviously am not a vet, I personally always check with my vet about any meds....but my vet is wonderful about giving advice over the phone!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

laurie thank you for that advice .. I am nervous because mocha has never exhibited any signs of skin problems before and I'm not sure what to relate this red skin to other then possibly the auto feeder. I'm just not sure how long her skin has been red ... I know if I call they vet they will say why don't you go ahead and bring her in and we will check her out, at which point I will say well we can't really afford that right now and she will say well I don't feel comfortable giving advice over the phone blah blah blah ...

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Great AMPS and great Hooting! :thumbup

Have you considered just using an inset, you can get small glass bowls at most dollar stores. I made ceramic ones for Tess. which feeder do you use? I read something about stainless causing allergies to i think.

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Hi Devon, That's a mighty impressive AMPS! Sorry I can't help with the skin thing. Have you tried just putting a little vaseline on her neck? That won't hurt her and might help. We use the CatMate 2-compartment feeder, which has plastic trays, but old-fashioned plastic, not the polycarbonate that the PetMate seems to be made of. Maybe you could try the CatMate. I think that glass dishes might fit into it, too, and it is much lower than the PetMate 5-compartment feeder, so it wouldn't rub on her neck as she eats.

Good luck,
Ella & Stu

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Hi Devon. NIce amps :-D

Have you thought of everything Mocha touches with her neck, starting with new detergent, on your bedding, carpet, etc. Spray deodorizer you use on furniture, that she might lay her head on, like over the arm of a chair?

I just bought a very large carpet remnant for my hallway. Not knowing what kind of chemicals might be in/on it, I laid it outside and hosed it......omigosh, It sudsed like crazy. I kept rinsing til the water ran clear, who knows what they coated it with.
Just a thought. I have not idea what might calm the redness. Doc gave....uh, sold me a cortisone lotion to put on my Samantha for her itches. I don't know the strength offhand. Gave it to my DD.

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141

Hi Devon,

I saw that your vet won't answer questions over the phone (that's so infuriating, isn't it?). I looked up "phone vet" online to see if anything came up. You know we have phone a nurse type things for humans, so there's gotta be a vet somewhere that does it too. And sure enough, there is! http://www.phonethevet.com/ I've never used them, but you could discuss the issue with them and see if they have any ideas for you. I doubt giving an antihistamine would hurt for a few days just to see if the redness goes away, but I understand wanting a professional's advice. Good Luck!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172

No problem! IMO, the internet can solve anything! ;-) I hope they help you out!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172

hmm well I went to the ask a vet online page, and for "medium urgency" and "medium detail" they are saying most people pay $38.00 for that kind of information "IF" we are satisfied ... if not, we don't pay anything .. I'm not sure I want to proceed ..

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172

Oh, that BLOWS! I didn't realize they charged. Is there a vet hospital near you that you could call for dosing info? I know there is a 24-hr vet hospital in the next largest city near us, and you can call them and just ask if there is an antihistamine you can give your cat for what you believe is an allergic reaction and they'd tell you what to give and how much--at that clinic they're all about how to help you not have to pay ER/walk-in fees. I called them the first time Max's bg dropped to 60 because it was after hours and I was freaked out. They were really nice about it. If you don't have a hospital near you, let me know and I can find the number for the one near me. It should only cost you the price of a long-distance phone call. Mind you, they won't try to diagnose Mocha's issue, but if you tell them you just can't remember the dosing for the antihistamine, they won't question that you have talked with your vet about it. They were also super nice with helping us figure out if the dog had managed to eat a lethal dose of hershey kisses (darn dog got a whole bag of the dark chocolate cherry cordial ones! and he did end up being fine, btw.).

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172 +10 279

barb, I did not notice your questions earlier but no, nothing new in the house .. I washed both her blankets and our sheets like I always do. I may have used a new fabric softener or detergent, but not anything I would not have used in the past since I normally stick to one to two kinds (whichever are on sale) Nothing is sprayed on our furniture and I vacuum the floors and the furniture almost daily. Nothing new came into our house either ... I just don't know what it is ...

We don't have any Vaseline in the house .. I was thinking of putting on some of our neo cream that we use on her ears, but I don't know if that would irritate her more. To me it seems like it is something that her neck area must come in contact with because no where else on her body is her skin red like that. I feel really bad for her .. I know it has to be uncomfortable ...

Mindy, thank you for your help on this .. someone on the health board suggested trying Chlor-Trimenton? It is an OTC drug for allergies .. I think we are going to try that and see if it helps her. Im also picking up her auto feeder tonight and going to get up and feed her out of her bowl at her feeding times until we figure this out.

My poor girls ... does anyone know what it's like to wake up each day and NOT have the weight of the world laying on your shoulders? I know I'm being dramatic but it seems like it is always something ..

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172 +10 279

Oh Mocha, that is quite far enough to bounce. You slipped up and let momma bean know that you can get the good numbers, back down please.

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172 +10 279

You're more than welcome Devon! I would try the Chlortrimeton as well. It is one of the few anthistamines that is safe for asthmatics (of which I am one) to take--it's a pretty mild one. The Claritin or Zyrtec would be something to go to if you need/want a 24-hr med that doesn't involve drowsiness, but like I said, I'm not sure if it is safe for cats. I just know it's safe for dogs. Benedryl is also safe for cats--dosing is usually a 1/2 tablet (weight dosing is 1mg per pound), but may or may not make them drowsy. It does mellow my cats out quite a bit, but if Max has it, he sounds like he's drunk when he meows. And my dog is allergic to benedryl, hence the need to give him claritin or zyrtec instead.

Good luck, and let us know if it works out!

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172 +10 279

thanks mindy, we are going to try and get to town tonight and get the chlor trimenton, if we don't make it tonight, it will be tomorrow night definitely. Her throat is still red .. I feel really bad for her ..she starts purring when I rub it so I don't know if she does that cause it hurts and I heard they purr when they are in pain, or if she is purring because it feels good .. so I try not to do it often .. I just wish I knew what caused this

Re: 9/1 mocha amps 62 +1 141 +4 172 +10 279

Devon, I saw your post in health. I've seen L-lysine at the drugstore in the vitamin/ supplement section.

not a bad day for mocha who has an irritation thing going on on her throat .. we just ordered some wash on amazon but it won't be here for a few days so we are going to head to wal mart tonight to buy some allergy meds for her .. I keep telling myself it's an allergic reaction to something but of course every time I convince myself of that I turn around and start panicking that it's something else .. I wish I was not a worrier ..
