8/9 Mr Kitty Update

Just for @Suzanne & Darcy ;)

I'd been waiting til there was something more of substance...we have a vet visit Friday with hopefully a final chest tap (or better yet, no tap needed!).

He's been a very happy purry sunbathing kitty. He's started grooming himself again and I'll be honest, I'm a little tired of the hairballs (the Rutin stains everything lime green). So I'm hoping regular brushing will help with that. Id been avoiding it because he seemed a little sensitive to it with the weight loss and chest taps, and I know it's also a symptom of acro and arthritis.

Oh! He started making biscuits again! I was thinking the other day that was one thing I'd wish would come back and I'd know he was really good, then the next night I woke up to back biscuits!

I do wish he'd play more, but that just feels greedy at this point. He hates the syringed Rutin with a passion now, and has learned he can just stick his tongue out and it'll fall out. Also struggling to get him to eat the low fat food, so I've been giving more higher fat food than I'd like but...balance between weight gain and possible chyle formation. Lastly, loose stools that I cant seem to fix, but I'll focus on that later.

I'm praying that his vet visit on Friday will be a positive one and no chest tap needed

Thanks for the update. We all like to know what's going on. Don't suppose you can convince Mr Kitty that the Rutin is gravy to go with his biscuits? I love (and hate, but can relate) to the image of the limp tongue with medicine dribbling out. Don't tell Minnie about that trick. All paws and fingers crossed for the vet visit on Friday. :bighug::bighug:
 
Or you could just change all of your home decor to lime green:joyful:.
I'm glad you posted an update on Mr. Kitty and happy he is making biscuits again:woot:. Paws and fingers are crossed here for NO chest tap being needed on Friday.

This all sounds good! I'm happy.

Sorry about the Rutin stains. Have you tried spraying hydrogen peroxide on them? When I've tried everything else and the stains just won't come up... hydrogen peroxide usually dose the job (it takes time to see it lighten). Of course, this is just on regular carpet and not for anything fancy like the Persian Rugs (which, since they are wool usually seem to clean up beautifully without any carpet cleaner at all... just water). But sorry... I didn't mean to get off on carpet stains!

You are doing a great job with him (or he wouldn't be doing so well at all). Have you counted his breaths per minute? Do you have anything to compare it to? It sounds like his breathing must be normal. I will keep my fingers crossed for NO chest tap. How will you know he is "cured?" What does the vet say? Does he need to be on the Rutin and low fat diet perpetually?

The stains are fairly easily removed, I really like the Woolite remover (it has the lime green cap). It's more the annoyance of having to clean that up and spot treat on top of everything else lol

I've not been counting breaths per minute exactly, just keeping an eye on him and watching his breathing (it's pretty easy with the shaved area or when he's laying next to me). I'm also using appetite as a clue, since that seems to go before anything else.

I plan to ask the vet what he thinks about "cured" and continuing the diet and rutin. I rather suspect I won't be able to rest comfortably for several months, will just have to keep an eye on breathing and appetite. Maybe slowly drop the rutin and see how he does, not sure how much longer I can force the diet on him. Problem is these are both experimental treatments so there's no solid guidance.

I have a cordless Bissell Spot and Stain Remover that is a life saver. I also have lager, corded versions, but they are a pain... I save them for the bigger messes. Is the Woolite an aerosol spray can? I may look for it.

I think, from what I have read, you are right about it taking months. It's great that the Rutin is working though it's kind of "experimental."

I have an upright Bissell cleaner, but the tank portion pops off and is a portable cleaner. Its not bad, though cordless would be nice.

The Woolite is squirt bottle. Sometimes it comes with a lime green scrubber that actually works pretty well, looks a little like a curry brush for horses if you're familiar with those. Back when Mr Kitty used to eat dyed food (:confused:) it was the only thing that would get the red and orange out of the beige carpets. It lifted a lot of the Rutin stains, will have to hit them a second time and that should do it.

I'm glad it's working too, just hoping it's more short term...or DH is going to get put on med duty for a bit :smuggrin:

What do you feed Mr. Kitty now? What are the low fat options?

Thanks, I did see that one with the curry comb/brush thing on it! I may try adding that to my arsenal!
