Hello!

It's Cain's one month anniversary of being OTJ!! :-D dancing_cat dancing_cat

Funny how fast I get out of habit of testing daily and making a condo here. :) Cain's doing well. A little too well. Due to how often I have to feed Brownie, he's probably around 15-16lbs right now. The scale here at home doesn't work and I haven't had the spare cash to buy another. And I just took a cat to the vet and the meowing on the way up makes me unhappy. So the taking Cain to the vet to weigh him option hasn't been appealing. But he's playing every so often, definitely running around the house a little bit after going to the litter box , and as you can see on the spread sheet, sticking to his favorite 70s. His weight is my only worry on him right now. The vet yesterday was happy to hear Cain was off insulin. I think he even quoted a statistic to me I think came right off that paperwork I gave him. The Methyl B12 I'm giving him daily seems to be helping him. He's almost tippy toes again on his legs. And his coat is looking better.

I take him outside every so often so he can eat grass and wander around a bit. I just have to be careful cause crazy ants are still out here in full force. We've managed to keep them out of the house (as far as we can tell) with the occasional intrusion. But when the grass outside looks like a ton of ants running through it when you look closely at the ground in the areas I would take him too, it doesn't make me want to take him outside. :) But during the hotter part of the day they seem to hide a bit and Cain can go out while I watch him. Diatomaceous Earth has been working well to knock them down around the house and my car, until it rained finally. Which reminds me we need to get more for when we get another dry spell. Not that we aren't currently having a dry spell, with very hot temps :-|, but it's supposed to have some rain this weekend. The baby powder is good for inside as well as the earth.

Brownie, on the other hand, has been eating a lot. I took her to the vet yesterday and the vet increased the concentration of her Methimazole a little to see if we can get her hyperthyroid under control. She's 6lbs right now which is 1 lb higher than the last time I took her to the vet last year but she's definitely lost weight. You can see it on her hind legs. As soon as the new concentration comes in, the vet says we should see results in a few weeks. I hope so. Her other options, outside of trying to get the medication to control it, is surgery or the radiation treatment. There might have been a third but I can't remember. Since she's 14 years old, I hope the medication can get her condition back under control. She's still playing and oh is she still good at meow and crying until we feed her aka the alarm without a snooze. :) So I'm doing what I can to help her.

The vet calls her ancient kitty. Poor girl.

So that's the update. Good healing wishes to the kitties & beans that need them and many hugs to Ann for her loss.

Hi Jennifer, very nice One Month Anniversary report on Cain and so good to hear how well he's doing OTJ! I bet your Vet is impressed. I hope Brownie improves with increasing the med. Sending her healing vines. Have a nice day.

Thanks so much for visiting and for your kind words of condolence. Yes, I sure was blessed to have her for almost 15 years.

HAPPY ONE MONTH!!!

YEAH CAIN!! HAPPY 1 MONTH ANNIVERSARY!!

Hope you can get Brownie to respond better to the new meds!!

14 isn't ancient!!...It's "Seasoned"!!

Thank you all for the visits and well wishes: Mary, Chris, & Ann. :D

I just realized my avatar was missing. I thought it just wasn't loading. It's back!

14 is indeed "Seasoned!"

Happy one month anniversary Cain!

Now, about all that food you are eating Cain old buddy. You may need to cut back on that if you don't want to go back on the juice. We wouldn't want to see you have to leave the falls. My foster mum only lets me eat 6-7 ounces of wet food a day. Keeps me in fighting trim and at the falls these past 4 and a half months. - Wink ;-)

Hi Jennifer,

What a great report on Cain!! If only he could share a pound or two with Brownie. Hope her new meds help.

I have seen those crazy ants on the news. They are showing up in parts of FL also - they look uncontrollable!!

I hope Cain and Cleo will be celebrating one year OTJ together next year :-D :-D

Hi Jennifer, so nice to hear from you and Cain.
What a great report!!! I'm so glad he is doing so well.

Wow, a month already, how times fly's Cain's party doesn't seem that long ago. Glad he is up on his toes again. Thanks for stopping by to see Lucky and hope you will be at his party.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY CAIN!

Glad to hear he is well.

We had the I131 radiation treatment done on Gus when he was about the same age as Brownie. You want to have her on the MMI for about six months to allow numbers to become euthyroid and see what the kidneys do. If the thyroid levels are too high, it perfuses too much blood to the kidneys and the renal values look normal. This is called running the kidneys hot. That can wear the kidneys out.

The I131 can affect kidneys if the values aren't normal before the I131. So, use the MMI for six months, if kidney values are normal, you can have the treatment.

flip_cat CONGRATULATIONS CAIN flip_cat

I'm so happy for you and Cain!

fyi: Sammy was 14 years old when she had the radiation treatment for hyperT, and now is 17 years old and has survived FD. She was in bad shape when she had the radiation treatment, but it only took a few months for her to get strong and healthy again. It was like she was reborn. So Brownie at 14 is still young!

Like Marje says though, it's best to verify her kidney values first by putting her on the MMI. I couldn't do that with Sammy because of time constraints (moving overseas). She was lucky; her kidney values were normal a month after the treatment. But she did develop stage 1/2 CKD about a year later, probably from the stress of the hyperT.

Sorry I didn't get back to this until today. It's been busy around here.

What's an MMI? The vet did mention something about hyperthyroid affecting kidneys.

Though I think I need to see a specialist (no insurance yay), and Dad was very much iffy about doing radiation treatment (cost mostly), so I think we're going to have to work with the methimazole medication for now. Unless I manage to get the money for it, but see above. :) I can't seem to build up four hundred dollars to go on a neat trip (airfare, hotel money, spending money). Now if I win a small lottery... :-D

Though I thought the vet was going to change the concentration, but when I picked up the new medication on Friday, it's an increase in dose but not concentration. He just found out recently the pharmacy they order from does now do different concentrations. So if I can't get Brownie's ears to absorb .15ml twice daily or she doesn't improve, he'll change the concentration.

Thank y'all very much for the comments/visits about both Cain & Brownie. Particularly about the radiation treatment. Hopefully sometime in the future this is something I can try for her, but I think at my current unemployed state, it's not happening. I'm going to try slowly reducing how much food Cain eats while trying to still feed Brownie a bit more. I'm adding some water to both of their food when I remember it.

I was just so worried about both of them. It's been adding to my stress lately. Especially Brownie when she got home from the vet visit she was panting and her heart was going so fast. She calmed down after a short time at home but it was definitely worrisome.

CONGRATS ON 1 MONTH
Cain is Lucky to have you,I hope everything turns out OK
healing vines sent that way that all works out

Happy one month OTJ!

I'm glad Cain is doing so well. I hope the Methimazole helps Brownie. Once you find the right dose for her, she can live a happy, healthy life. My Callie has Hyper-T and has been on Meth for a couple of years now and is doing fine.

MMI is another name for methimazole. fyi: There's an excellent discussion of the relationship of hyperthyroid and kidney disease on Tanya's CKD site here.

I also ran across this interesting article. It's a review by Mark Peterson (noted veterinary endocrinologist) of new research that indicates the use of L-T4 supplementation after radiation treatment to minimize the worsening of kidney disease: Use of L-thyroxine supplementation after radioiodine therapy helps blunt the worsening of azotemia in hyperthyroid cats with pre-existing kidney disease.

I totally sympathize with the constraints of finances. You are doing everything you can for your babies. Hope Brownie is feeling better soon :-D

Oh! Huh I didn't know that. Thanks, Susan! :-D And thank you for the links. I will take a look at them.

Thank you, Carla and Linda!!

I think Brownie's been on the methimazole over a year now. I've had to readjust the application area once already. Now we're doing the dose increases and concentration increase if needed. I'll have to check with the vet for how long she's been on it. On the plus side, when I do get the money for it, the vet believes there is a place that can do it within 40-50 minutes of my house. Which I think is one of emergency vet numbers I wrote down in case of hypo. So that's good at least. :)

Thank y'all for all the suggestions and visits. This place continues to be awesome!

Healing wishes for the kitties & beans that need it.
