Good morning LL,

I swear this diabetes thing is going to make me lose my mind. We're at +3 and Meadow is 37 on the AlphaTrak. Kayro and some gravy food is now on board. Will recheck again in 15 mins. I'm supposed to go give fluids to a very sick kitten at my foster home at 11am, but if Meadow is not on the rise by then, I will postpone that. Looks like this is going to be a very stressful day. And I only gave her .75u this morning because of the lower AMPS level. Damn.....

Re: 8/8/10 Meadow's AMPS 149 +3~ 37!

Sound like a plan - good catch!
Easy on the foods, not too much at a time.

Update SS when you have time to breath

Meadow is so pretty...who would think she was made of rubber!! Wow Meadow...can you bring that up to a nice surf please? :o
Always happens when we have some place to go, right? Hope she will surf nicely today....

I agree with Ronnie -- give small bites of food since you may need to feed over an extended period. Testing in 15 - 20 min. is good until you get the numbers above 50. Lather (test), rinse (feed) and repeat!

Re: 8/8/10 Meadow's AMPS 149 +3~ 37! Now at 109

Okay, here we are 20 mins later and she went up to 109. That Kayro sure works quick. She basically only licked the gravy off the food and ate a few small chunks, so not too much at one sitting. Will test again in 15 mins and if she is still rising, do you think it is safe to go care for that kitten for about an hour? I canceled the rest of my plans for today to stay home with her and keep an eye on things.

That's a big jump. Please get another test in 20 min.

Also, you didn't happen to double check that 37 to make sure is wasn't a goofy reading, did you?

No, I don't think it's safe to leave yet. Karo can act quickly but it can leave quickly, too. You need to see at least 2 numbers that are in the same range or rising and then I'd back off to testing in 30 min. When giving HC, especially if you've had a number below 40, numbers can bobble around as the HC wears off.

Actually, I did a control test and also checked on the Reli-On. Control was normal and Reli-On read 72. So I am thinking that 37 is most likely pretty accurate. :?

So, if she is still rising by say, noon, then it should be pretty safe to leave for an hour then? I really need to get fluids into this poor kitten. Should I feed Meadow again if she is starts going down?

yes offer a little food if she starts dropping

See what the next tests bring you.

Did Meadow eat much after AMPS?

She ate a good breffis at 7am and I was going to give her breffis #2 when I said, what the heck...let's do a BG check. Thank goodness I did! Doing another in 5 mins.

Okay, now we are at 160. Will wait 30 mins this time and do another check. Wonder if her liver is in panic mode now too?! ;-) :o

Re: 8/8/10 Meadow's AMPS 149 +3~ 37! Now at 109

It looks like Meadow resembles Gabby with regard to early, fast drops -- the dreaded bungee cat syndrome! Let me encourage you to get a +2 routinely. It will give you a better sense of where the cycle is going. (With some of the changes I made with Gabby's feeding cycle -- I'll explain that next), I also get a +1. Take a look at our SS today and you'll see why!

One way to offset these drops is to spread out mini-meals over the front end of the cycle. I feed Gabby (and Gizmo) at pre-shot, +1, +2, and +3. Most of the time this helps to keep her numbers from dropping too fast and it levels things out. Between feeding and testing, I have considerable control over the cycle and can add HC when I need to. If you are going to change the way you're feeding Meadow, please make a note on your SS and it can be helpful to asterisk the times when you're feeding.

How far is the kitty you're caring for and how long will you be gone? Is there anyone at home who could keep an eye on Meadow and test if you're gone for a bit?

And yes, I bet Meadow's liver went, "Yikes!"

We're still on the rise at 167. DH will watch her, but I will only be gone 30-45 mins, so it should be ok. She's catnapping now anyway. I do try and get a +2 most times, but with my schedule, it's very difficult. If I am home, I do spot checks. As for feeding, she usually gets a snack at +2 and/or +3. Doesn't really want anything at +1 even though I offer if I am here. I'll try to get DH to offer food in the early cycle if I am not here.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am calmer now! @-)

I'm back from caring for the sick kitten and just took Meadow's bg again and it's at 96. Gave her a little more low carb food and will retest in a bit. She sure seems to be feeling just fine though, which I guess is a good thing.

Well, here we are with a PMPS of 293. It was quite a day. Took a +6 and 1/2 bg at 1:30pm this afternoon and it was 96. Fed her some more food and had no choice but to leave the house on an emergency call because that kitten crashed and I had to rush her to ER. Spent 3 hours there and called hubby and told him to feed Meadow at 3:30, which he did. Got home at 5pm and immediately took a reading and it was 81. Curious why it went down after food and so late in the cycle yet. She's a strange one this cat!
BTW, the kitten is still in the emergency hospital until tomorrow and then will go to my vet. She is stable but has the doctors stumped. She had a URI but seemed to be recovering from that and then boom. So we'll keep her under doctors care for a couple of days. Thank goodness they ruled out distemper.

omg and what a day for you. And Meadow, and that kitten. Thank goodness there are people like you that can help out others. truly.

I am another one who feeds like Sienne suggested, as Mannie tends to drop quickly, and sometime very hard - he loves those bungees. It has helped him alot to have food given over the first 3-4 hours, small portions on the hour. Feel free to check out his SS too.

You did well today. And I hope all works out for the kitten.
