Should I give him bit more food or leave well enough alone for now ? What would be a good number for him to be at at +4 and/or +5 that would show he's safe for the evening ?

Well, at this point, you don't need to offer a snack, unless he usually gets something around now. If you test at +4 and he is the same or higher, you don't need to test anymore. I usually have a couple of little mini-meals for Mav up until around +5, but not sure of your usual evening snack/meal routine with Elmo. You don't have to give him anything if you don't normally, since he isn't dropping anymore.

Also wonderful are the observable signs he is feeling better...pee less...getting up on couch... backing up to DH for a back scratch..ate a bit on his own...

All those observations of daily behaviour are so important. We tend to get so hung up on the numbers when there is progress to be seen in the little things they do.
