Today would have been Alice's original mom Juliette's birthday. I first met Juliette 11 years ago when she came to work as a receptionist in my office. My co-workers and I are going out to her favorite restaurant for lunch in her honor today. I really miss her and I know Alice, Charlie, and John do too. :sad:

I will call the vet this morning to check on John. Without the IV, his off-the-chart kidney numbers have probably not come down much, but hopefully the subcutaneous fluids have helped some. I'm trying to "think positive" about it, but with this advanced kidney disease, it's hard to be optimistic. Hard for me anyway. Just wish this wasn't all happening on his momma's birthday. :-|

Some good news: Molly, my dry food addict, actually asked for canned food this morning! :-D I gave her a little dry, but she followed me around crying and didn't stop until I put a scoop of Fancy Feast in her bowl which she promptly gobbled up! Progress! :thumbup

Edited to add: And now the bad news. John has not improved at all and has not eaten. The vet doesn't think he will last much longer, just a matter of days at this rate. She said I could bring him home, basically to die here, or they could put him to sleep this afternoon. :cry: :cry:

i'm so sorry Geneva. If it really looks like he will not get better it is probably better to let him go peacefully at the vets. You don't want him to suffer.
sending lots of hugs to you. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

I'm sorry that the news about John is so bad. It must be very difficult to make such a hard decision about John on the same day that you're remembering your friend.

Hi Geneva
Hope you can celebrate your friend today even though John is sick. So sorry for him and you :(
Its your choise but I would set him free and let him spend his mommas birthday with her at the bridge. No need for him to suffer anymore when the outcome is so bad. But i know its not an easy decition. Is your husbond home with you soon?

I'm so sorry, Geneva. That's some rough news to get. Best of luck in deciding what's best for him, it's always so hard. Hugs.

Oh, Charlotte, thank you for these beautiful words. I needed to read this.

John is gone. I was with him at the end. He was so weak. He was so cold.
It's a comfort to think of Juliette being there to welcome him over the bridge. rb_icon

Thank you to everyone for all your kind words. I know we've all been through it but it's never any easier, is it? Thank you so much. Most of my RL friends are pretty much, oh, well, it's just a cat ... but I knew all you kind, compassionate kitty-lovers here would understand.

Looking back at these old pictures, I can see now how much weight John had lost.

oh Geneva
i'm so very sorry but please know you did the right thing. it was beautiful that you sent him along to be with his other momma on this special day. i know you will cry for a long time but we are here for you. and i will send my Cory, Munchkin, Vinny & Willy to greet John at the bridge and like i always say they will show him the best mouse watching spots. john is so happy now & no more pain. it is such a gift that we can give them to let them fly. i am always so grateful that i can love them enough to let them go when they are ready. Nadine - you always know just what to say. Thank you so so much for your sweet post. I'm crying like a baby now because of it, but thank you. I appreciate it more than I can say. {{ hugs }}
