? 8/24 Xena Fur Shot

So life has been extremely crazy lately but as far as Xena treatment goes, it’s been pretty much the same. I literally just caught her numbers up on her chart last night and it was planning on posting today anyway… Her numbers have seem to come down since I increased her to 15 units, she just went up to 16 yesterday.
Then this morning I was giving her her shot, and I just started using these syringes that have longer needles, because that’s all I have. After her shot, I noticed her fur was wet. I swore I would never let myself give a fur shot but here we are. I’m assuming it went in one side of her skin and out the other, when I plunged it, I couldn’t be sure how much I missed, but it seems like quite a bit. I hope it wasn’t the whole shot. I’m positive. It was at least 5ml, so I gave her another 4ML shot. I’ve read on here that people generally don’t do that but since she’s on such a high dose and I could tell it was quite a bit that missed. I felt I should give her something. I will be testing her much more today than usual obviously
Did I do the wrong thing giving her another 4 ml?

and I had just shaved her again…to try to avoid this.

In the future please don’t ever give another shot even if sure it was a fur shot because you have no idea how much did get in. Just test like you plan and post if you need help. You might need more testing tonight as well it it could be totally uneventful.

Thank you for the feedback. I was pretty sure that’s what people were going to say. And I totally understand it’s just that I’m positive at least half of the dose did not get in. There was a lot on her fur, and since she’s on 16 units, that would mean approximately at least eight units missed if not the whole shot, so I wanted to give her some thing. And I understand maybe it wasn’t the right thing, but I’ll be testing very regularly for the next 24 hours and keeping an eye on her.
It just figures because this was her first blue pre-shot in like forever. I feel like I’m cursed sometimes.

Hi there

Does Xena have a high dose condition?

I'm adding my voice to Elises. There is no way to know how much insulin got into your kitty.
Never attempt to correct a fur shot by giving another shot - just chalk it up to bad luck and wait out the cycle. Safety first.
Better a day too high than an hour too low

Once my Black Kittys' dose got over 7u or so the fur shots increased (my hands are very slow and unsteady thanks to Parkinsons). What worked for me was to split the Lantus dose into 2 separate syringes.

Thank you everybody for your feedback. When I gave her the shot, I knew that this would be what everybody said, because in general better to be safe. The only reason I gave her the shot is because the amount of insulin that was on her fur was enough that I was absolutely positive at least half of her dose did not get in her, if any. That being said, my own reasoning made me feel comfortable with giving her 25% of her normal dose. She’s on a pretty high dose at 16 units. I totally understand if a cat is on like just a few units, it would be really hard to tell how much insulin they might’ve gotten but with the amount of insulin on her fur I was sure that giving her four units was less than what didn’t get in her by quite a bit.
Again, I would never suggest to anyone to do it, and totally understand the reasoning why that is the protocol, but under these circumstances, that’s why I made that decision.
As far as this being her first first fur shot, Xena is really good with shots. She’s so preoccupied with eating, and that’s when I give her her shot. I just started using this 8 mm syringes, instead of the 6 mm ones. It’s ironic, because when I first started giving her shots, I thought the 6 mm syringes were too short, and then I might have a problem with them, pulling out or some thing, but they wound up being much better for this reason. I have to be real careful with these syringes that the tip does not go out the other side of the skin tent. You bet your butt. I’ll be even more careful now.
Again, thank you for all your feedback and I definitely agree with the advice.

What Wendy said is correct. However, I do intend to get her tested for IAA and acro. I imagine it’s pretty safe to say she has at least one of those conditions I’m hoping to be able to get the test done in the next couple weeks.
God bless you… I cannot imagine trying to do all of this with such a condition as Parkinson’s. It’s so much as it is.
Thank you again.
