Wasn't going to post here until Donovan's 6 month OTJ-versary in a few weeks, but....

One of my Foldie civvies (Butthead) is at the vet right now having surgery. He developed a growth in his ear a few weeks after kicking the bejeebus out of it and making a bloody mess. Honestly I don't know that the two incidents are related, but the lump wasn't visible before he kicked it. Vet just called to let me know she removed the mass, and now she's going to work on his teeth, which are also pretty bad. There was the option of ear canal ablation to prevent the spread of any cancerous cells, but I opted to wait for a tissue biopsy to decide on further action. She found and removed a smaller mass in his other ear as well :-|.

This board is great for vines/snowflakes/blizzards, so please send a few his way. Vines especially -- Butthead does love his greens :mrgreen:

Vet just called. Teeth surgery is done. He had 6 extractions, plus some long ago broken teeth were left in his gums that she didn't remove since they didn't seem to be causing problems. *Might* be able to bring him home later tonight depending on his recovery from anesthesia, but the original plan was for him to stay overnight (there is a tech there watching them). We shall see. Thanks everyone. I'm starting to breathe normally again now. Hopefully the mass in the ear is not malignant.

Butthead (great name, hahaha!): I want you to feel better very soon and now that your teeth are clean you will enjoy eating and smiling a lot more. You flash those pretty teeth at Donovan so he will need sunglasses to look at you. :-D
 
Yeah, I gotta call in about an hour to see if he's OK to come home tonight.
He may still be stoned out of his mind :cool:
 
best wishes, Butthead! i'll send some healing vines from my yard...it's a botanical marvel! and it really attracts a lot of critters for me to watch, cuz my bean wont let me out there to patrol...

Thinking about you guys tonight! Sounds like butthead has been through the works today (as you!). But with a tough name like that, a darlin' brother, and such a wonderful bean I have a good feeling all will be okay!!!

Latte left an endless amount of vines and snowflakes for me to send as I see fit...so take as much as you want!!!! :mrgreen:

Thanks for all of the good thoughts, and sorry took so long to update. I can't post from my phone like many of you do. I was able to pick up Butthead tonight, and have been watching over him at home for a couple of hours. His eyes are still a bit weird, but he doesn't seem that groggy. Right now he's napping after pacing around for a while. Thankfully there were no stitches, so no funnel-head is necessary. The final tally was at the low end of the estimates I was given - maybe about $1600 total with initial consultation, bloodwork, ear surgery and teeth removal etc., plus meds. Should have biopsy results within a week, and he goes back for a re-check on Monday. Tomorrow I discover what it's like to give him bup. Never had that stuff before - all I know is I'm aiming for between cheek and gum and not down the the throat.

BTW, his official registered name is Linanci's Gen'Earation neXt -- but he's my Butthead :-D
Very glad to have him home.

Just got the call from the vet about the biopsy. It's malignant :YMSIGH:

I'm in shock right now. I'm leaning toward further surgery and ear canal ablation, but that is not a guaranteed cure.

Need a blizzard please.

Even if the surgery and ear canal ablation isn't a guaranteed cure, will this give you and Butthead more time... and/or a more comfortable time? I'm sure you have a zillion questions to ask your vet. But right now I'm sending hugs to you too. ((((MJ and Butthead))))

oh I am so sorry - I hope there is a treatment that can remove any more cells. I wish all the best to butthead! Healing vines, snowflakes, and many positive thoughts.
 
So sorry to hear the news. With a name like Butthead you know he's gonna be worthy of it and beat this stuff. Lot's of positive vines coming at you

Thanks everyone. Surgery is scheduled for next Thursday, but there's time between now and then to think about this some more. Butthead turned 13 last month, he's relatively healthy, he came through this past surgery with flying colors, and he seems SO happy now. How can I not give him this chance, even if it's only that - a chance? :YMSIGH:
 
You are a good Mama MJ...your heart is in the right place in trying to help him with this chance...and it is a chance.
I don't know anything about it...but I guess their are risks, always are. But what chance does he have if he doesn't have surgery? Are the risks worth it?
If you feel in your heart that it is worth the risk, then you will go forward with the procedure. I will be thinking of you as you weigh your options.
It may not be that big of a process in making that decision...it is up to you but we are here for you....
and support whatever you decide to do.

The tumor may or may not grow back and/or spread elsewhere with or without the surgery, but more aggressive removal of the area where it originated increases the chances of success. The vet has performed this type of surgery before, and because of its location, one of the possible risks is facial nerve paralysis. I can only hope that it was caught early enough. I recall her saying that chemo/radiation was not effective for this, but Googling seems to indicate otherwise. But it's hard to assimilate everything. Feeling rather brain-damaged right now.
 
It's too much all at once MJ...can you take a break? Foggy brains don't think too straight...and believe me I KNOW about that! :lol: You will sleep on it tonight...okay? When you are refreshed, then read some more. This is hard to do, but you will get through all the information soon enough.

Have you posted on Health about this? You never know...everyone seems to know so much about everything on this forum, right? :razz: That will be a little break from the reading for tonight.

Quite understandable to feel brain-damaged right now MJ. I agree with Pat, take a break, relax, enjoy Butthead, and get some rest. You can start again in the morning.
 
Golly, MJ, I'm so sorry to hear this news. I hope that you can get it all sorted out and that if you decide to go with the surgery that Butthead will come through with flying colors. He is a beautiful boy. Good thoughts, healing vines, and snowflakes are heading to Butthead tonight. Try to get some rest and clear your head.
