I had a day off, so what better way to spend it than at the vet? Lucy has been peeing on my bed. She did it 4 times in the last week. I’m 95% sure it’s behavioral, because she is tired of Jazzy being here. I wanted to get rid of that 5% of doubt, so off to the vet we go for a urinalysis. Easy, right? Ha!!!

One delightful thing about Lucy is that she gets stressed in the carrier. So stressed that she urinates the second we get outside. She pooped too, so they couldn’t even use that urine as an unsterile sample. I had to leave her at the vet all day so they could keep trying to do the cysto. They tried twice, then called and said they would try again at 5:30. That’s seven hours after I left her, surely she would have some urine by then, right? Oh no, that would be too easy. Sometime between 3:30 and 5:00, she peed in her cage. They had put NoSorb in the litter box, but leave it to Lucy to find a way to get the urine absorbed before they could get it. Yep, she laid in the box and soaked up the pee with her fur. So no urinalysis today. I’m going to try to get an unsterile sample in the morning, thinking that it’s better than nothing. I’ll just put her in the carrier, walk out to the car, then come back in and syringe the urine out of the carrier. Should work. ;-) And if we do manage to make it to the car without her peeing, I’ll drive the 4 blocks to the vet’s office and rush her in for the cysto. I know the sample really needs to be sterile and obtained via cysto, but she does this every time she gets in the carrier, so odds are that we would have the same thing happen tomorrow. Vet did get a good look at her bladder on the ultrasound and said it looked fine, just was very small.

Since she was there anyway, I went ahead and had her annual bloodwork done. All is well, a couple of things were a little out of range but the vet wasn’t concerned about any of them. I’ll have to dig out last year’s results to compare.

The one big thing the vet said is that Lucy needs to lose weight. She has actually lost since last year, but she is still 15.5 pounds and probably should be 10-11. Now, I will preface this by saying that I always tell people how much I love my vet. She doesn’t even sell prescription foods (will write a script if you really need it) and pushes EVO as the preferred diet most of the time. So what did she do today? She wrote a prescription for R/D or W/D for weight loss!!! Ummmm, do I want to feed my diet controlled diabetic food that ranges from 25-37% carbs? No, I don’t think so. I did notice on Janet & Binky’s chart a Royal Canin calorie control that is 8% carb, so I might check into that instead. Ingredients don’t look great quality, but then again neither is the Fancy Feast she is eating now. Has anyone tried that food?

Another day in the life of my diva girl. Please can I have a clean bed tonight?

Oh .. how I can sympathize with you about the trip to the vet! There is ALWAYS poop and pee in the carrier when we go ... I hope you guys make it there in the morning without incident ... and if not, I hope they can use your sample you bring them .. .great news on the lab results!!

Sorry about the wet bed and I hope you can get some urine tomorrow. I have never used Royal Canin, so no help there. But I did get my civie from 15 lbs to 11.5 lbs just by cutting his portions. It took several months and he thought he was starving and told me so every chance he got, but he is no longer a "tank". I hope this helps.

Lucy and Emma sound like they are soul mates! Little Miss Emma is prone to UTI's, and everytime they try to do a cysto she pees all over the place before they have a chance. They've only been successful when she's been sedated. They've pretty much given up trying to do one on her, and now I (very carefully) do a free catch at home. It's not ideal, but it's the best we can do with the crazy girl!

Oh gosh Libby, I hope you get to the bottom the the bed wetting.
Checkers had a vet visit last week, and for the first time EVER, he peed in his carrier...well, doc had been sqooshing his bladder. He first cursed out the doc, and then went back in the carrier and peed.
Doc was able to pull the sopped towels out fast, and get urine in a syringe. Not sterile, but good enought to look for ketones and blood.
Oops didn't mean to make this about us. :-D
I hope you're able to get some tomorrow....and sleep dry tonight.

Good luck tomorrow! I can so relate to this whole post - one of my civvies is the same way - never can get there without a present in the carrier!

No clue on the food. I've had overweights in the past, but they weren't FD, and we were able to just go with a 10% carb food, which did get rid of the extra pounds.

Nice on Lucy's labs - hope all is well, when compared to the last set. I finally last week put all of Mannie's labs (well all two of them) on one sheet. What a pain, but it is nice to be able to compare one set to another, see the differences, catch any potential problems.

Hope you make it there tomorrow... Maybe Lucy will decide that life is to good to be stressed out about a kitty carrier, a car ride, and foreigner. Maybe?

thanks Ele, it does. I've been trying to figure out how to feed cats separately so I can control portions better. That is probably worth a try to start with. I used to do better at controlling their portions, until Jazzy came along.

I looked at the RC, and it's 130 calories for a 5.8 oz. can, so then I thought she can eat a lot and still not have as many calories. But if I feed my skinny kitty something different that tastes better, then Lucy will shove him out of the way to get the "good stuff." Plus, every now and then I like to humor my vet by actually following one of her suggestions.

Separate diet for each kitty? Piece of cake!! Well, not really, i but i have to do that. there are times that I feel like the ring master of the circus - standing there in the middle of the kitchen controlling all. HAHA! Mani off in the corner up on the table, one in the corner with her diet food, and the other over by the water dish with her everyday stuff... which she usually fusses over. omg - it is the insanity ward... Good luck!

Frustrated much? I am totally feeling your pain, Punk pees on ME as I put her in the carrier....it's great.

Have you tried the Wellness fuds? I must say, Punk is looking rather svelte since I switched her to it.

I am happy to read that Miss. Lucy had the otherwise nice check-up, good girl. cat_pet_icon

I hope you can get to the bottom of Lucy's problems, Libby. Nothing worse than having a kitty pee on the bed...Guess I'm lucky...none of my cats have ever peed in their carrier..knock on wood.

As far as food...never tried that RC brand. My civvie, Ralph, was 19 lbs. when Spot was first dx'd with FD. At that time, everyone was free feeding on dry food. I got rid of the dry and started feeding the Sophisticat brand of food...the 0-1% carb variety. Ralph got 1/2 can in the morning and 1/2 can for dinner. He has lost 5 lbs and looks good. Of course, he's just like Blackie...thinks I'm starving him and any chance he gets he will push the others out of their bowls so that he can clean them up!

Libby's test results were good! Nice!

((Libby)) I had a wet bed to come home to when we went away many years ago. "That'll teach 'em" they must have said! I hope it is dry for you tonight... That is really a great spot to leave your message though, isn't it?

They should have curbside service for these cystos....they managed getting once from Raja last time but she is lying next to me and has read everything you just wrote. She smacked her forehead when she realized that she should have emptied her bladder like Lucy did.

Have you tried the Feliway? My two have been holding hands and singing Kumbaya ever since I plugged it in. Not! But maybe it's worth a try. What can you possibly do if it is behavioral? I am so sorry to read this...cause I can't think of an easy solution to this since Jazzy is all moved in and well, if that's the problem, gee....
Raja has slimmed down a lot since she has been off the dry...but especially since I have been mixing some Wellness, Evo 95% along with some chicken that I mix with the Feline Future powder...I get the kind that has liver included.

Some day off you had Libby! I hope things get better for Lucy..and for YOU! Good luck tomorrow. Sounds as if you have a good plan worked out....wishing you well! At least the check-up went well otherwise.... CATS!! <BIG SIGH>

I'm no expert on weight lost, on people or on cats! And I also refuse to have a bad relationship with food...

If you want to tinker around with the food brands it's up to you. Feeding multiple cats is difficult especially when snacks are better than actual meals for felines that are pancreatically challenged :-D If you allow me, I will stick my neck out and say that could try increasing the activity level of Lucy and see how that works.... as i say to myself, if you can't control the pie hole, you gotta work out!

I vote for the curbside cysto service too!

poor you, and your bed. Hope whatever issues Lucy is having gets sorted out.
Good luck with the food. I've never tried RC hope she likes it.

Oh Lucy! At least her antics make for great stories.

I hope they have better luck tomorrow and Lucy gets over her Jazzy problem.

i had been wondering how it went. not well, i gather. poor lucy. did vet try giving her some SQuids?

I looked at the RC, and it's 130 calories for a 5.8 oz. can, so then I thought she can eat a lot and still not have as many calories.
how many calories does she eat now? you can do 130 calories with about 5/8 can of wellness. add in water for extra volume, if you like, and if she'll tolerate soupy food.

Wow, you and Lucy had quite a day! Sorry about the wet bed. Doing laundry is bad enough when you aren't forced. I hope Lucy checks out okay or can be treated easily. I can't believe the trials of trying to get urine today! Sometimes I think it would be nice if kitties could watch videos of other kitties facing similar scenarios. A nice kitty Lifetime channel to make you realize that you'll be OKAY if your mom has another baby. lol

When Tess was having accidents in her sleep, I got waterproof crib sheets and put them under covers on the furniture. I she like to go in one spot you could do that or use pee pads.

I just got the TidyCats Breeze litter box with non absorbent pellets. There is a grate in the bottom so the pee goes through to a reservoir, it makes ketone testing easy. Take the pad out to collect for a sample. Not much help for tomorrow though, sorry.

Best of luck tomorrow, Libby!!!!! Back in the days years ago when Stu was almost 18 lbs. I decided simply to cut the amount of food I gave him. I was inspired by an ad (intended for people, not cats) in "Rat" magazine (an East Village rag that we used to read): "Want to weigh less? Eat less!"
It worked.

Ella & Stu

Lucy no more peeing on your mom's bed! That is not nice!! Now be good and give the nice DR a specimen tomorrow!!

Both Danger and Cosmo like to pull the pee on me and the carrier trick. Buying one of those bottles of blue "waterless" shampoo things has been one of the best purchases I've made in a long long time.

Good luck with catching some pee tomorrow. Silly cat. Doesn't she know it would be much easier if she either stopped peeing on the bed OR just cooperated?

ps. Cosmo lost 2 lbs by switching to Wellness. they're super low carb.

Libby, I don't suppose you like sleeping on plastic tarps??

I sympathize about both the pee and the food issues! I have just given up trying to shift Kitty to Evo. The more Evo I mixed into his FF, the less he liked it. He lost weight, alright, but it was probably because he was walking away from his dish. (He rejected Wellness outright.)

Here's what I noticed, though: While he was on half Evo, his energy was WAY better. Much friskier, playing more. After barely a week on all FF, he's moving more slowly again.

So if you find the magic food that kitties will like that is not junk food (and doesn't require cooking because I flunked Kitchen), please let me know!

p.s. Cyn, what is a blue "waterless" shampoo thing?

Aww, sorry the Lovely Lucy is having some, um, issues. I'm glad you can keep your sense of humor about it. I hope the next attempt yields something to test.

HI Libby and Lucy!!! So sorry to hear about your crazy day!!! I had to laugh reading your story but I know it must have not been too funny for you! HOpe you can get a urine sample soon! I have been switching my kitties over to wellness since Scrabble was having some liquid poo issues with the FF. Both my kitties have lost weight since the switch to wet food. After Scrabble went OTJ I started slimming their portions a little bit. Have not heard anything about the Royal Canin. Hope things get better!!!

Sorry about you vetty day!! Moonie usually pees on the vet techs--They are her target after all they're the ones that pick her up!!
Copper also peed in his carrier but vet was able to get a sample, he always pees in the carrier--
Dopey cats, they just let it all out when they go to the dreaded vet visit!
I also need to get a sample of Moonie's--would prefer a C & S, but need to do Copper's dental first..
Hope you get some results soon--It is very frustrating to bring them there & nothing you need gets done!
Abetter tomorrow--Hugs!!

thanks everybody! My cats don't like Wellness, though they do seem kind of into the Turkey & Salmon right now. I bought half a case this weekend in hopes of using it to help switch my kitties onto better food - I have one extremely picky civvie who will only eat FF. We'll keep working at it. I don't usually like to feed that much fish, but if that's what it takes during the transition... Lucy likes EVO, but of course if I put out one dish of FF for Mickey, they all can smell that and will shove him out of the way to get to the FF crack.

CF - yes, they tried squids.

Roni - I know!!! $200 today, and I didn't get the test I actually went there for.

My bed is dry, so I'd better hurry and get in it.

Gee Libby I guess I really did'nt have it that bad with Sara peeing on the towel in the bathroom. :-| At least its not my bed. Hope you can rule some things out. I understand about the carrier. I had a cat that did the same thing every time.

Your taking Lucy out in the carrier to get urine, reminds me of taking a baby out for a fake car ride so they would go to sleep.

Good luck and keep us posted. You really have had a time of it.

jan and sara

Good luck, Libby, today with Lucy and getting the sample. My GA Siamese used to do the same thing when I took him to the Vet, but usually right on the exam table taking an aim at the Vet. Maggie is overweight, too, and I've not had much luck with getting her to eat the good stuff. She loves Sophisticat Supreme. Hope you can get that sample.

Libby I tried the RC once for DL but he was not FD at the time so I was not concerned about carbs he did not lose weight but then again he just sleeps all the time Lucy sounds a lot like him he has gained I weighed him yesterday and he is up to 16.9 ohmygod_smile and he should be about 11lbs so I really need to do something for him he is on a feeding schedule but I do notice the freeze dried I use some is higher in fat so I wonder if this makes a diff or it could be all he does is sleep he has needed to lose weight ever since neutering almost he got fat on w/d dry. Good luck with the urine sample today

Hi Libby,

Jackson has had The Royal Canin Weight Control foods. Both of them. As a matter of fact, Alex had them too.(hard to believe). The high fiber and the calorie control that you're talking about. Unfortunately, while they both liked the high fiber...the one high in carbs, neither would touch the other one. And i don't blame them it smelled fishy or something and awful. To be quite honest, Jackson has lost more weight being on Alex's diet now(FF) than he ever did on any weight control diet he was ever given by the vet....
Glad Lucy's blood work was good

ETA: when I want a non sterile sample I put a wee wee pad down blue side up in a litter pan (no litter of course). It seems that cats like the puppy attracting scent also because no matter who I do this for I always get a sample and it floats on top. (Jackson uses wee wee pads all the time and monkey see monkey do, so I always have them in the house which is how I came up with this nutty idea)

Libby--We have a plastic sheet on our guest bed that goes right over the mattress, as we had some company that had problems in that area
(I dont want to talk bout it) --But it did keep the mattress clean & dry--In any bed, bath & beyond-
Hope Lucy will be just fine--Moonie will be going too...
