7March2020/Maxi/AMPS403/Update and Question

Well, yes and no. The problem is we never really know how much insulin YOUR cat is going to need before the pancreas begins to respond and help get those blood sugars down. In the meantime, the insulin you provide is all that he's getting since his numbers aren't coming down he needs every drop.

You will have to be patient and help him along during this time - and let's hope that the next dose is the right dose to start seeing better numbers. I know it's difficult but not getting any tests at night and then having a red number this morning makes me wonder if he went lower than he's used to last night - or the night before.

Without getting at least a test before going to bed it's very difficult to tell what he's doing at night. Many cats prefer going lower only at night...

Could you please try to get a test or two at night? It might be the 'window' you've been looking for as to whether this dose is helping him at all...

Have a great day Karen!

Hi Karen, Maxi just hasn’t reached the best dose yet. When he gets close to it you should see the numbers start to lower.
Try and always get a before bed test in. That helps with the puzzle.
Is he still eating a low carb diet? With no chance he’s getting into any other food?

Thank you, Sue.

Please see Maxi's spread sheet; I have tested him all through the night many nights.

Why would a high number in the morning suggest that his number went lower than usual during the night?

Since tonight he's had a dose increase, it will be another night of testing him all through the night.

By the way, Maxi's AM&PMPS is 9:30.

Thank you, Bron.

On Maxi's spread sheet you can see that I have gotten post PMPS tests in many a night. Tonight I'll test him several times, too, since it's a dose increase night.

Maxi gets his shots at 9:30 am and pm.

Yes, only low carbs and he's not got into any other food.

One would expect that at 3.5 units his glucose numbers would budge a little, wouldn't one?

Every cats insulin needs are different. I know it is very frustrating for you. Just keep doing what you are doing and you will get there.

does Maxi have any other issues such as bad teeth or pain that could contribute to higher numbers?

The vet very recently checked his teeth (he doesn't have many left) (and gave him a once over), and he doesn't seem to be in any pain. He's in very good spirits, very active and affectionate. He does also have kidney disease, but at the last vet visit, it was still early stage.

Thank you, Bron!
