I am now an acro mom.

I got Jazzy's IGF-1 results today. She is positive for acromegaly (IGF-1 = 180). That's not a really high number, but I have no idea if that means anything.

The good news is that Jazzy is doing really well on a small dose for an acro. She is on 7 units and running yellow and blue. She is flat, flat, flat and that makes things pretty easy (anti-jinx). I hope she stays this easy (anti-jinx again). Her peeing and eating and drinking are finally diminishing. She still doesn't like the other kitties, but the growling is sounding a little less threatening these days. Since I don't have to push her to go green, maybe we're near a dose that will be good for a little while.

I love all you acro moms, but I really didn't want to join your club.

Anyone who stops in to visit here, please also visit Amber/Meadow because she got the same news today.

I do like your good news better.
Having you as Jazzy's mom is even better. Very lucky girl to have found you.

Too late Libby; you're one of us now. A member of the acro club!

You know the lowish number just means that not much is happening right now; remember that Shadoe was low too with her 120. There are other acros that are small dose ones, and just look at what Shadoe's been doing lately! Her dose tonite was a 1/2 dose - 3.75u - and the highest she has been is 14u. She dropped dn to under 3u after her dental, and has been wandering around with not higher than 8u lately. Isn't KB a low dose acro?

I always like to look for the positive and in this case, you can always say Jazzy's got a healthy pancreas!

As for liking the other kitties, Shadoe still hates Oliver but tolerates him. Just like people, maybe Jazzy won't be best buddies with the others but will learn to be tolerant.

I guess you have already added Jazzy to the acro tracker yes?

((((HUGS)))) Libby we know you are going to do a great job with Jazzy and I am sure you are going to enter the land of acro learning if you were not already there anyway :YMHUG:

Aww, it's not so bad. You're great with all the sweet kitties and Jazzy knows it. She's just extra sweet now... even if she doesn't act so sweet to the other kitties.

Libby - Lanky & I want you to know that ACRO is synonymous with special. So joining our club means you guys are just very special! Since Lanky's IGF-1 is relatively low too, I'll be sure to share any information on what, if anything, that means as my vet coordinates with Dr. Lunn. I am curious to find out if it has a bearing on treatment options and/or success rates. Also, my vet said Diabetes Mellitus can cause elevated IGF-1 as did the doc at Michigan State. But nobody has answered my question of how much and are there other factors that can elevate IGF-1? Anyway, there sure is a lot to learn about ACRO for all of us. If there is anything at all we can do for you & Jazzy, just let us know.

Huggs & lots of 'em!
Susan & Lanky

Jazzy, You sure picked a good mom didn't you? I wonder if you know how lucky you are to have fallen into the arms of Libby.
Love
D

((LIbby))

but like Jojo liked to say, results, shemults. Jazzy is same today as she was last week. Happy she's got a great bean!!!

Knowing is better than not knowing.... even if we prefer not to hear it because it might mean doing something about it. Your instinct told you that maybe... uhm.. maybe she was acro... and your instinct was right. Look at it this way, you are insightful. Ok... that's not funny.... Jazzy is lucky to have you are a mom and (((((((((Libby)))))))))))

I think, too, along with the others that Jazzy is a lucky girl kitty to have you caring for her. That was meant to be, however it came about, with you fostering Jazzy, or is she now a member of the family. I'm not sure of the history. Regardless, she is in good hands.

I had read that acro often caused diabetes, not the other way around.

Acromegaly is caused by prolonged overproduction of GH by the pituitary gland. The pituitary is a small gland at the base of the brain that produces several important hormones to control body functions such as growth and development, reproduction, and metabolism. GH is part of a cascade of hormones that, as the name implies, regulates the physical growth of the body. This cascade begins in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus, which makes hormones that regulate the pituitary. One of these, growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), stimulates the pituitary gland to produce GH. Another hypothalamic hormone, somatostatin, inhibits GH production and release. Secretion of GH by the pituitary into the bloodstream causes the production of another hormone, called insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), in the liver. IGF-1 is the factor that actually causes the growth of bones and other tissues of the body. IGF-1, in turn, signals the pituitary to reduce GH production. GHRH, somatostatin, GH, and IGF-1 levels in the body are tightly regulated by each other and by sleep, exercise, stress, food intake and blood sugar levels. If the pituitary continues to make GH independent of the normal regulatory mechanisms, the level of IGF-1 continues to rise, leading to bone growth and organ enlargement. The excess GH also causes changes in sugar and lipid metabolism and can cause diabetes.

((( Libby )))

I'm so sorry, Libby. You were right on the mark when you got her tested early.

Sounds like she's fairly well regulated now. Maybe as she starts to feel better she'll be less grouchy towards the others. And I have no doubt she WILL start to feel better, and probably already has.

I'm sorry to hear that you've joined "the club". However, now, you'll sure learn how to dose an acro. Remember, Dr. Lunn has a drug trial going on (although it's not a cure); there's also SRS; there's also just treating with lots of insulin and loving her. Jazzy is lucky you found her (although it sounds like she's no longer up for adoption).

Like Jojo also used to say, Jazzy doesnt know or feel any different than yesterday, will be the same tomorrow--
What a lucky cat Jazzy is to have you!! Enjoy each other-
Yes. I feel it is better to know.

Libby and Jazzy......you are both lucky to have found each other. Libby, you may not want to be in the acro club, but I'm sure you will take the bull by the horns, so to speak, and do what you have to do, learn what you have to learn, and do the very best for your Jazzy. You have such a wonderful support team with the acro moms and they will help you learn how to best take care of Jazzy.
Now, Jazzy, I know you don't feel any different that you did yesterday or the day before yesterday and you don't quite understand what is going on and why your new mama is acting a tad strange. That's ok. Just know that your new mama will take the very best care of you that you could ever ask for!

Jazzy,
Even tho your new "title" is acro, it doesn't matter, cause you hit the JACKPOT, when you found Libby. Your going to be very well taken care of and loved!!!

Jan

((((((((((Libby)))))))))) So sorry to hear the dx. If anyone can do the best for Jazzy it is you, Now you know what you are facing, you will take the bestest care of Jazzy than anyone could do.

(((Libby))) Glad you know. You were on the mark getting the test. Jazzy could not be in better hands. Sugar Kitties are "special" Acro or not. It's just a number.

(((((Libby))))) jazzy couldn't have found a better bean than you. What a lucky kitty! You are certainly up to the challenge and Stu and I just want to wish you and Jazzy all the best.

Ella

Ah Lobby I'm sorry. I know that this is news that you didn't want to hear. I do know though that you are going to handle this like a pro. Jazzy is very lucky to have you but I'm sure right now all you are thinking is that you are so so lucky to have her and how much you love her. Hang in there.

Libby, I'm so glad Jazzy found you. How fortunate for her that you knew to even consider the acro test. I'm sending many hugs to you and Jazzy.

Knowledge IS Power, right? Great that you tested her early....so, now you know!
I am so happy that jazzy has found you Libby. I just know that the next 20 years of her life are going to be the BEST for her!!!
So, you are in a new club for yourself...along with all the other acro Mamas....at least you know what you are dealing with, right?
Wishing you well...and jazzy too! :YMHUG:

Haven't checked in in such a long time & just saw Jazzy's news.

Agreed - she's one lucky kitty to have gotten you to take care of her! Nothing like getting the best!

Donna
