Bear has had a comfortable week. I don't know if his increased Methimazole dose is starting to kick in. His heartbeat is still racing. I had a few days off, and it was sunny and breezy, so he was feeling cuddly and enjoying the fresh air on his face coming through the open window. His BG numbers have improved, back into the yellows and blues, out of the pinks. I did something this week which I have mixed feelings about. I have started feeding him his old favorite varieties of Fancy Feast. They are loaded with phosphorus. He has been losing weight, and is so weak. He turns away in disgust when I offer him the two varieties of Friskies that he is "allowed". In desperation one day, I gave him some Tender Liver and Chicken, and he ate with real enjoyment and enthusiasm. I decided that I was not going to let him starve while there is food in the house that he likes, and that he deserves a bit of pleasure in his day. This is not good for kidneys, but it is good for his soul.

He will go back to have his T4 rechecked at the end of next week. I expect we will be looking at his anemia and renal values as well. We will find out then if we have come to the fork in the road yet. Jess and Choy-Foong have been very helpful in the thread on Health regarding Aranesp and iron supplementation.

Teddy and I were both happy to see Bear feeling a bit better this week. Here is a video of Teddy getting an ear bath:

 
What a lovely video! Bear Man must be feeling better this week or Teddy's ears are really dirty (or perhaps both? :-D ). It had to be rewarding to see him eat with such gusto even with it being higher phosphorous food.
 
I'm glad he got such enjoyment from the food.

Nice to see Bear Man had a good week. Hey, if he wanted something like Liver & Chick, it may improve his soul and body to better continue his fight. Good for you Linda. The video was darling. What a sweet video. It's so nice to see how much your boys love each other. I'm so glad that Bear is feeling a bit better this week. It's so good that he enjoyed his food. What the heck. He needs to eat so even if it isn't the ideal food its worth it to see him happy. I've been thinking of you guys every day. Take care.
 
It's good to hear that Bear had a better week. Seeing him caring for Teddy is wonderful, too.

Is adding a phosphorus binder a possibility? (I know nothing about this -- haven't done my homework yet.) Or, can you add a little bit of the foods he likes to his Friskies? Would it be an inducement for him to eat his low-phos food?

He is taking a phosphorus binder in capsule form twice daily. He won't eat it in his food, and TID dosing is difficult due to the requirement to space the binder from his other meds by two hours.

I don't think he would fall for the food mixing trick. He does still nibble at his renal dry food.

Bear Man appreciates all the devotion that Teddy shows to him and it looks as if he is thanking him....such love!! Those two boys are so close...and so wonderful!!

There comes a time when it is the soul of a cat that we need to take care of. We treat the body just enough to make sure that the cat is comfortable and can enjoy life, as it is now. Bearman engaged himself on that path for a while now, and I am so happy for him to have you. I know you are taking good care of his soul and making the right choices. Hard choices but good choices.

I am very glad Bear man had a nice week :)

Your boys are so precious together. I'm glad Bear has had a better week and that he's had some meals that he truly enjoyed. That was a great idea and I'm sure it made a difference in his attitude. (I'm certainly not looking forward to days of bland creamed vegetables and soup when I reach my sunset years.)
 
Seeing Bear and Teddy together and how they love each other makes my heart swell. I'm so glad that you take the time to post the pictures and videos Linda, I know how busy you are. Good for you to give him some of his favorite foods, it's worth the happiness he gets from it. Glad to hear he had a better week and hopefully the T 4 will be good.

what a nice video! I warms my heart to read Bear man has had a good week, that he has his fav food on the menu, and that he wants to care for Teddy. Mannie hopes that Bear man will make Luna's party today. and that they can hang out some.

Right you are - i think we all reach a point at some time that the soul needs to be given top billing.

Such a neat video, Linda. We are glad to hear that Bear had a better week and is enjoying his favorite foods again. It is so important to have good=tasting food to look forward to. Stu hopes Bear and Teddy will come to Luna's party today.

I know that this is probably medically wrong, but I'm with the others who agreed that "it may not be good for his kidneys, but it's good for his soul!" ... crappus when your enjoyments are slowly becoming few and far between... eating the food you most enjoy is heavy on the counterweight of the balance! cat_pet_icon

totally agree with you re the food. cleo's been a patient so much lately it is just time to let her be a cat every once in a while. so whatever makes her happy she gets. (well, i won't bring bobby back to the pound for her. lol.) glad bear man got his yummy food. :)
 
So glad to hear that Bear had a good week. I completely agree with you about the food. Sometimes it is important to do things for the soul. I definitely would have made the same decision. If there were anything in my house that Jake would eat on his own, I would give it to him. Best wishes to Bear and many healing vines.

I'm so glad he is enjoying eating his favorite food...I agree with you and others...feeding the soul is so very important. To see him that enthusiastic about eating, does you as much good as it does Bear Man! :mrgreen:
