Tashie couldn't be sweeter this morning! She came downstairs with me and gave me little tiny meow's and was humpy backed - this is HUGE as she hasn't been like this in years! I know the Mirtazapine, along with being an appetite stimulant is also an anti depressant and it makes me wonder if she should have had this a long time ago!

So, it's a bummer that she is running HIGH this morning - although this is nothing new for her ........ BUT, there is a possibility that we may have done the dreaded "F" shot last night .... after shooting her Jim said that his left hand was a little wet and smelled like insulin (he is right handed) ...... and then, for her +2 test, when I picked her up, SHE smelled like insulin. He is SURE he shot her - and I watched him but I'm wondering if it was the needle..... We accidentally bought the wrong BD needles - they are 100U instead of 30U so I fell back to some ReliOn that we had as a back up - and they are seeming really "slippy" so it could have been something like that? Who knows! Hate the thought that WE may have screwed up the best day she's had in ages .... well, if so, I guess her insulin depot is drained by now!

Will do a +6 and report back!

Thanks to everyone that was around for me yesterday! Getting numbers in the 30's is freaky! Marje, I was so lucky to have you to hold my hand as I know you are more of a night owl! Bet you were beat last night! THANK YOU!!!

Bern

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

Nice string of greens you had there, yesterday, Tashie cat_pet_icon
I hope her bounce is a quick one. I'm glad she is feeling good despite the bounce.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

Thanks Dayna! ......sometimes I think she feels better HIGH than LOW - Low she is just sort of lethargic. And, when she's high, she EATS - not so much when she's low and you NEED them to! What can I say - she's a cat!

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

Well ... she eats when high because she can't use the calories (not enough insulin) and her body complains about that. Its a delicate balance between the food and the insulin.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

I honestly don't think the high AMPS is a surprise. While it's possible that a fur shot is involved (and it's also possible that there was some insulin on the outside of the syringe/needle from adjusting the dose and that's what you smelled and felt), I think it's far more likely that what you're seeing is a bounce.

Tashie has not spent all that much time in anywhere near to normal numbers. As a result, when she either drops into low ranges, is in a BG range that her body isn't used to, or the numbers drop fast even into say the yellows, it triggers a bounce. Bounces are simply her liver and pancreas reacting to what seems to be a "dangerous" situation (that's not really dangerous) because Tashie's body has become accustomed to the higher numbers. When this reaction occurs, a stored form of glucose along with counterregulatory hormones are released and these cause numbers to spike upward. It's a very normal response.

It also underscores why Tashie may seem to feel better in higher numbers. Her body is treating the higher numbers as her new "normal." The more time she spends in blues and greens will help her body to become readjusted to better BG ranges.

One thought that I do have is that it is entirely possible that Tashie has been bouncing like this for a long time. This is why PM tests are important.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

Sienne, I agree. I will get back on the PM testing - my vet threatened me not to - but she can take hike right now - I have plenty of prescriptions for Lantus and all other meds (some have 99 refills) ...... they are just 10 minutes away IF I have an emergency but other than that, I'm staying away.

.... funny how she (the vet) told me that IF Tashie drops low, she will "automatically" go and eat - what, wake up out of a coma and think to herself "Oh, I am at 27, I SHOULD eat but I can't be bothered......." She doesn't WANT food when she's low.

I will be more vigilant about testing! Promise!

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH!!!

Tashie! You behave and stop that bouncing! Good luck today Bern! Hopefully you will start seeing more of those good numbers!! You guys have a great day. :-D

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH/+5.5=185

Hummmm...... kind of a big drop her her from HIGH. Just fed some LC and will test in an hour or so.... all of a sudden is the insulin working?!!!

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH/+5.5=185

Tashie is hitting nadir time...fortunately you are midway through the cycle and can hopefully surf her through with LC. Do you have any MC? Like around 10%? Using Karo or HC at this time in the cycle may not be necessary which is why I ask.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH/+5.5=185

Karen, Tashie has a tendency to nadir later than +6. She has just wolfed down some LC AND some turkey. I feel "okay" about where she is - just didn't expect that much of a drop! But that's my girl, likes to keep me on my toes! She's eaten a lot today so I think that will "support" her - right? .......not even THINKING of Karo

"most" cats will go eat when they feel the dropping. Of course, this brings us to the ECID, and although Poe might do that, Tashie may not.

I'm sorry to say but I think your vet is very ill-informed on FD in general. She might know more about human diabetes, but that's not her profession.

These past 2 nights with Poe taught me ALOT about him.

Those 4 tests per 24 hours are crucial. I know Tashie does not like (ok, hates lol) to be tested, but the more of a routine you get with her, including treats, and whatever else she likes, the more she will become accustomed to it. Does she like to be handled at all? Like being held in your arms, laying on your lap, etc? Are there places on her that she don't like touched? Focus on stuff like that...sometimes that helps too. Some test the paw areas instead of the ears and maybe that will be an option?

Just some thoughts...I'm no pro by any means, just some things I was thinking about.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH/+5.5=185

Her number is good (185) and you may not have to worry about her eating if she drops a little between now and her nadir. But for me, I would test every hour which you have been, so see where she's at +6.5, which if I understand you right, puts her right around her nadir, and from there, she should start climbing back up anyway. The bouncing always throws us off..thats where I'm at now with Poe.

Re: 7/27 TASHIE AMPS - HIGH/+5.5=185/+7=197

she's come up a tad to 197 - at least she didn't bounce back HIGH :? I have a feeling I may be in for a PJ party tonight ..... we'll see - just have that feeling ........ regardless, these are actually good numbers for her. :-D

Well, she's higher than I'd hoped but at least it's a number and not a word! Baby steps! Will do a before bed test.

Tash is eating exceptionally well today, have a feeling she may have gained an ounce :RAHCAT we are calling her "piglet" and she is scarfing turkey like a maniac! NO COOKIES! NO COOKIES ALLOWED!

I really thought I was going to a PJ party tonight - that's okay, I guess you just can't plan these things - surprise parties are more fun - NOT!
