Hi all I am just curious, I was looking on the Weruva Site at the Pate foods
about phosphorus percentage

Do you go by As Fed Percentage or the
Dry Matter Basis
I know absolutely nothing about
Not that Tyler needs this but just in case down the road or if I did want to feed him something with less phosphorus
Thanks guys :cat:

I calculate mg phos / 100 kcal of food using this nutrient calculator that @Tomlin once linked for me. It has come in handy a lot with Butters. I use it to make sure I'm doing my best to stay <250mg phos / 100kcal right now with her CKD. Oh I just checked the Weruva pate foods website because I was going to do an example calculation for you using the calculator, but they actually list the mg of phos and other minerals / 100 kcal of all of the pates on this page.:joyful:

:bighug:
Give Tyler some kisses from me and Butters:kiss::kiss::kiss:

Thank you Lyla and Elise this is still foreign to me lol
I did look at the Weruva site , how come the carbs are lower on the as fed percentage
But higher on the Dry matter basis
@tiffmaxee @Butters & Lyla
I am dumb when it comes to this
Not that Tyler has high phosphorus levels
So if I ever wanted to switch Tyler to Weruva the carbs are higher on the dry matter
which looks too high for a diabetic, he eats FF Pate 2 or 3 percent now

@Butters & Lyla
I'll definitely give Tyler big wet kisses from you :p
Butters looks like she's doing great on the 0.50 dose
Is she scratching getting any better, I see on your SS on 7-21 she was scratching a lot since getting home from the vet, I hope she's doing better , how the hell did this all start anyway, I totally forgot. Give her kisses from me and Tyler :bighug:

For carb %, you want the % of total calories that are carbohydrates. This is neither the As Fed (AF) numbers nor the Dry Matter Basis (DMB) numbers. However, if you have AF data or DMB data, you can plug those numbers into Marje's post Calculating % Calories from Carbohydrates.

BUT,
because Weruva is super awesome, they provide the Metabolized Energy profile (at the same link Lyla provided - it's the top table) - as Weruva says,
ME Profile measures the percentage of calories coming from protein, fat and carbohydrates and this is exactly the info we are looking for :woot: It tells us the % of total calories that are carbs and we don't have to do any math (though if you ever need to do the math and it's overwhelming, sending me a DM :bighug:). FWIW, Weruva provides this information for all of their food (not just the pates). Weruva also owns Soulistic (only available at Petco) if you want more options too.

Hi Susanne Yes I did see that, it doesn't matter how much you try to explain this to me I still don't get it and probably never will :p

I just wanted to know what darn chart on the Weruva site I would use if I ever did want to switch, I see all the carbs on there are higher than the FF Pates
@JaxBenji

Diane, they have so many different lines within the Weruva brand that you have to look at all of them. But basically what I found is their BFF PLAY pates are all low carb but not all low phos. If you go to Ruby's SS and go to the Weruva tab, I have everything sorted according to the phos level and I also have carb percentage so you can choose. Let me know if you want it sorted according to carb percentage instead, I can do that as well. I've fed Ruby lots of the Weruva so I have a lot of data copied from their website.

Thank you Katherine, I'll take a look, I used to give Perry the BFF Play Pates .
I don't know how on got on this kick today about Weruva , I saw other members talking about it today. I will definitely ask you if I ever decide to switch Tyler
Thanks so much Katherine , kiss Ruby for me ok ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:
I'm happy to see the blue PMPS for Ruby tonight

ha. IDK. Just pick a couple and see if Tyler will eat them. Go to petco (or whatever food store you have that carry Weruva) and get some individual ones. Also, I don't know if you feed Tyler fish, but A LOT of Weruva has fish so read the ingredients if you are interested in that :bighug:

I was just thinking about the same thing!

What a timely topic today as I have to switch Howie’s food and am trying out the Weruva BFF Play pates. My question is about the ones with chicken or turkey AND tuna. I know Dr. Lisa says not to feed fish. However, I struggle to find a Weruva food that has more than 50% protein, around 20-40% fat, around 5% carbs, and lower in phosphorous as she recommends for the nutritional composition based on %ME. I studied all their charts today and it seems like the ones that have some fish meet all those criteria. Howie has no teeth so must have the pates. Any thoughts/advice? Otherwise, it seems like there are only the steak frites and Press Your Lunch as the only other ones who match the criteria. He’s been on a very high protein food for many months so I hate to switch him to something that only has 30-40% protein and 60%+ fat. His current food is switching their formula so I can’t use it any more. Thanks for the good topic!

I would look at the list I linked to. I sorted the spreadsheet according to protein and checked Tiki Cat Puka Puka Luau and it's all chicken and high protein but 0 carbs. Does Howie's food need to be about 5% carbs or can it be lower?

I just got done trying that Tiki food. It’s shredded chicken and doesn’t work with no teeth and my food processor wouldn’t grind it up. I just don’t want to go above 5-6% carbs. Thanks!

Hi Diane - I’m on a CKD board on FB and one of the admins is what I call their Food Guru. He maintains a list of a zillion foods based on % and DMB phosphorus and carbs, protein, and a few other parameters. They maintain a list specifically for diabetics with CKD. We feed Weruva BFF PLAY chicken checkmate, chicken cherish, chicken n Turkey tiptoe, chicken n Turkey topsy turvy… some others we tried were Weruva chicken frick a zee, press your lunch, and fowl ball. We also feed Weruva truluxe glam n punk. These all fit under 5% carbs and under 180 something or other (sorry - not enough coffee yet and i dont have the chart in front of me) phosphorus and mostly moderate protein. The BFF PLAYs are moderate calories, the truluxe is high cal.

there are more Weruva that are acceptable for diabetics with CKD. I can let you know.

Whoa I’m gonna need to check out Ruby’s SS!!! Amazing!!

Diabetic CKD Foods (Low Carbs, Low-moderate Phosphorus) Updated, May 23, 2021

The most awesome list that is kept up to date .... for low carb/low-moderate phosphorus foods. The page for the Diabetic CKD Foods is on page, 11, so scroll down to find all the date in Metabolized Energy format. A lot of the Weruva BFF PLAY foods are low phosphorus ME. You aren't going to find any commercially available foods lower than that unless you go to a prescription renal diet (which are higher in carbs anyway).

This link is amazing! Thanks for sharing! Do people pay the most attention to the carb %s and not pay as much mind if they are higher protein and lower fat that Dr. Lisa recommends? Trying to find a low carb, lower phosphorous, high protein, moderate fat is very challenging unless I start feeding him food that has some fish in it.
I also found a link to a list last night that indicates foods and ingredients. Howie can’t have carageenan and guar gum, so this is helpful too! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1_8QYBR91quCjCL7mfmBPaJ3efyUa7nxnUxqP_m40meM/edit

Oh my gosh @Howiesmom how do you find food without those two things? Does it give Howie diarrhea or allergic skin problems

The Dr. Elseys food he’s been in for months didn’t have any carageenan or guar gum. But now that I’m on the hunt for new food, I have to read all the labels and do a lot of googling. He gets upset stomach and won’t eat.
How frustrating, I just saw the notice on their website. I was thinking of trying the pate.

cleanprotein™ canned paté update (6/21/21)

Due to a delay in production schedules regarding ingredient and labor shortages, our 5.3 oz cans of paté will not be distributed until October.

Smaller cans are currently available at Amazon.com and Chewy.com, with more formulas being added in late July.

Due to supply issues, cleanprotein™ beef paté will not be available until October in either size can.”
