Good evening. I’m posting an update on Max and welcome any feedback. I took Max yesterday for repeat labs and follow up on high blood pressure from the NCSU visit earlier this month. His blood pressure is still high at 173. Basically same number at NCSU. He has been taking Amlodipine 1.25 mg and Enalapril 2.5 mg daily. His vet wants to consult with NCSU before altering the meds. Still waiting to hear back on that. His labs still show an increased BUN at 39, creatinine is 2.2 (upper limits of normal). He had a SDMA done this time which was 11.3, and the vet said he has early kidney disease. I’m sad to hear that. I lost a cat to kidney failure before and it broke my heart. I didn’t really know much about caring for a cat with kidney disease at the time. I’m feeding Max Weruva foods with low phosphorus, but alternate between Weruva and Instinct GF because of his IBD. Weruva will upset his tummy if he eats too much of that. What phosphorus level should I be feeding him now? Any recommendations for feeding a cat with diabetes, CKD, IBD and chronic pancreatitis? I’ve looked into making my own food/raw diet, but other than the grocery store, I don’t know where to purchase meat for making cat food? Any suggestions or recommendations? I’m doing my best with Max, but man is it hard to balance it all. I know I say that all the time, but I love my boy and I’d do anything for him. Please give me some opinions on his labs and suggestions. His labs are posted on his SS. Thanks so much.:)

Sorry to hear Max's BP is being stubborn.:bighug: It's good to catch kidney disease early, we've had some cats here with it for many years. Acro is hard on kidneys, so it's a common issue.

Neko had diabetes, CKD and either IBD or small cell lymphoma, and the odd pancreatitis that goes with that. I mostly made her raw food, or bought some premanufactured that I knew were lower protein. Looks like Max's last phosphorus was 5.2? That's not too bad. Tanya's sites says action needed at 6 or above. http://felinecrf.org/phosphorus.htm but a good goal is 5 or lower. I used EZComplete with meat I got at a couple different places. I have an exotic meat butcher near me. I got buffalo there, but they have others too. I also have a pet food store that specializes in just raw food. They also sell just frozen meats, for those who prepare their own food. That includes elk, ostrich, kangaroo, water buffalo, goat, etc. as well as the more common ones. Lots of options. Tip: don't buy the most expensive meat first. Kitty will decide that's all they want to eat. Any farms nearby? I've also seen people get meats there. In the US HareToday sells options with or without bones. You want without.

The diabetes/CKD list here contains some options that might work for Max. There are some non chicken options.

Is Max getting prebiotics as well as probiotics? Important for IBD cats. More info here. I feed and have seen recommended psyllium husk powder for IBD cats.

Max and I thank you for the love @Deb and Sylvester and @Mikanmama ! @Wendy&Neko I’m giving Max Visbiome as far as probiotics. I’m not sure if there’s a prebiotic in that? What is a good prebiotic and probiotic to give?
Yes, Max’s phosphorus was a little higher this time so that’s why I’m looking for what to feed him. I don’t know of any place that sells meat like that around here. I may have to order it online. I will check out that HareToday. I’ve used the EZ premix with cooked ground turkey from the grocery store before. Is that okay? He can eat chicken in small amounts but turkey seems to be better tolerated so I’ve just gotten that. I’ve seen ground pork and ground beef at the grocery store but haven’t tried that with Max. The Instinct rabbit that he loves, is good for his IBD but I think it has a lot of phosphorus in it. Thanks for all the suggestions! I will look through these lists and see what I can find. Hopefully the vet can go ahead and get his BP meds adjusted because I know hypertension certainly isn’t good for kidneys either. Oh and I forgot to mention, she said he could have 50 ml sub Q fluids three times per week. I really don’t want to do that. I give him 25-50 mls at times when he has a flare of pancreatitis, but I’m still worried about his heart condition worsening. I will just keep adding water to his food as much as possible. Any other supplements that I should be giving Max? Thanks again.

Visbiome is a good probiotic. 1/2-1 tsp of psyllium husk a day for prebiotic. Start low and work your way up.

The turkey with EZ premix is low phosphorus. Not sure if they still do, but they did have a sample breakdown on the website using turkey as an example.

Not sure about supplements. I too was wary about fluids, was given the OK to give a low amount like you have been told is OK, and CHF resulted. Max's kidneys aren't nearly as bad as Neko's were at the time, so I don't think you need to do fluids right now. Somewhere on the Tanya's site is says at which point fluids should be started.

Sounds good. I’m going to read through on Tanya’s website tomorrow and search for cat food. I have some EZ premix here, so I will make him some of that with the turkey. Thank you Wendy.:)
