7-10 TYLER AMBG 149 Has Upper Respiratory infection

Diane Tyler's Mom GA

Member Since 2018
Hi everyone ,I'm been really upset
As some of you know on 7-2 Friday night Tyler started vomiting all thru the night.
Took him to my vet Sat 6-3 gave him fluids and cerenia injection.
Sent home with cerenia tablets
Checked his BG that morning was 129

7-4- Sunday AMBG was 149
By 11:00 AM was looking to eat fed him his FF Pate kept it down
@+6 his BG was 67

7-4 PMBG was 81

Eating , grooming back to his old self
7-5 all good did not check his/BG

7-6 AMBG was 80
Felt fine all day and night

7-6 @+3.5 day time BG was 93

7-8 AMBG was 105. Starting to sneeze was clear and eyes tearing clear
@+6.5. 113
@+9. 171
Still eating ,drinking , peeing, pooping, grooming

7-8 @+6 BG was 100 Night cycle

Still sneezing I could hear he was stuffed up

7-9 Took him to my vet lungs were all clear, slight temp
Gave fluids and covenia long acting shot said it was good for 2 weeks

Still eating, drinking, peeing ,pooping ,grooming
Still sneezing and eyes tearing

7-10 My vet was not in today, the owner was
I called him and told him what was going on
Suggested Famciclovir antibiotic 125 mg give HALF A TABLET EVERY 8 HOURS
Then suggested Lysine, he had the soft chew ones , I asked him if there was sugar in them and he couldn't tell me so I didn't take them

7-10 AMBG 143
I just gave him 1/2 tablet of the Famciclovir

I'm thinking after the bout he had with the vomiting this might have brought on the URI?

I have no knowledge about Lysine
Don't know which brand to buy, soft chew or powder
I don't think Tyler will chew one

I'm just worried about coming out of remission
I assume his BG is higher because he doesn't feel well
I will not start insulin again, correct?

Other than sneezing and teary eyes he's still eating, peeing, popping, grooming
I can just hear he's conjested in his nose or whatever you want to call it

Any suggestions on what Lysine to buy, remember he won't chew the soft ones

Sorry I haven't been checking on all the kitties, I'm just so worried about Tyler

Pure powder lysine is fine too. I just get some in capsules and open them up. The capsules just help me know how much is in there.

Unlikely, it's also possible he picked it up at the vet. No way to know now.

If he's stuffed up, you can put him in the closed bathroom with the steamy shower running for a while.

Also, don't worry about the temporary higher numbers. :bighug:

Thank you Wendy,:bighug:
I get like a basket case when he doesn't feel good
What do you think about the antibiotic the get just gave me, if I find the lysine whetecI can pick up it up now how many mgs do I give
@Wendy&Neko

If your cat has had convenia before, it's probably OK again. And you likely would have seen a bad reaction by now. I just don't have experience with it so cannot comment on it.

Diane, I am so sorry to hear that Tyler has a URI. When Ruby came home from the hospital after her DKA she had a runny nose and sneezing for about a week or two and then it went away. The doctors didn't seem to think anything of it when I mentioned it and didn't give anything to me for it. She hasn't had the problem since even after being in and out of lots of vet clinics and hospitals in the past few months. As long as he keeps eating, I'm sure Tyler will be fine after the antibiotics and antiviral meds kick in. He's a tough kitty cat. Big hugs, cat mama. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Diane, Dolly was on L-Lysine for years, believe it’s the same as Lysine, she has herpes in her eyes. I just got her the pure powder I believe on Amazon. I will try and find my order, years old. Just added to food. Dolly had a Covenia shot weeks ago. It’s not my favorite but got rid of her infections, Dolly had chronic URI’s, she became immune to it years ago. Should make Tyler feel better in a few days. So glad he’s not coughing.
Here is the brand I used. There are so many for cats on Amazon.
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B016WG7UF8/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20
This is the link. Sending my loving healing prayers for sweet Tyler. I also use the steam shower but Dolly hates being locked up anywhere even if I am with her. I also use a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom when she sleeps. Remember though, with Dolly, her condition is chronic. BG is often elevated when there is infection. It should return to normal numbers as the antibiotic takes affect. Unfortunately, URI are common in cats. I felt something was wrong when I didn’t see any posts from you. Try to relax, easier said than done. I am here for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

PS - I also used the NOW l-lysine mentioned for humans for her. The vet gave me some powder way back and the dose was 435mg per 1/4 tsp twice a day. That probably does not help. If you have Prime it’s one day delivery. I know not everyone does. I just get lots of Dolly stuff from Amazon.

Thank you Adrienne, I see there are no other ingredients in it, like no sugar
Looks good ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

This friggin cat , lol I'll just have to wait it out ♥:bighug::bighug:

Don’t worry about the Covenia shot. If he was going to get any side affects, he would have by now. There is not a med that does not have scary side affects, be it kitty or human. I let Dolly have one knowing all the possible side affects. All of the antibiotics she’s been given have potential, scary :nailbiting:, side affects. They have to list whatever came up in their trials so they don’t get sued. Hope Ashley is okay. You probably missed your visit with your dad. Take care my friend and get those patience pants on. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

He has had no side effects at all thank god.
Yep couldn't go see my dad, and now my car is leaking anti freeze :banghead:
When it rains it pours
My mechanic can't take it until Wed and he's the only one I trust
So for now I'll just have to wait to visit my dad
At least my brother went up today and my sister is going Monday

Some one has the maloik on me lol

Poor Tyler. I hope the antibiotic helps. In addition to shutting him in the bathroom, you can also try a vaporizer. That was a big help for Baby when she was really stuffed up. Also, you can give 1/4 of a tablet of regular Zyrtec twice a day. I hope Tyler feels better soon. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you Carla, I may have explained it wrong when I said he was stuffed up.
He's sneezing thru the day and it's loose
He can breath good I can just hear that it's loose in his nose
I hope you get what I'm trying to explain :p
He's eating fine so he can still smell the food
I may try the zyrtec , thanks for mentioning it
I wish I could get one of those baby things you use to suction the snot :p :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Oh I'm sorry Tyler is sick!

Mr Kitty had the Convenia before I knew more about it, and he was fine. Like Wendy said you probably would have seen a reaction by now, I'm sure he's ok :bighug:

I hope he feels better soon. I don't know anything about any of the other medications

Convenia is not a good drug to address an upper respiratory infection. Interesting that they suggested famcyciclovir - it’s anti-viral and is used to treat herpes infections. I wonder if he doesn’t need an antibiotic like clavamox or another broad spectrum antibiotic. Hopefully his own immune system will kick this infection! As for Lysine, I buy Vetoquinol Viralys L-Lysine powder and mix it in several of my cats (one with FIV) food. They eat it just fine. I believe it is chicken liver flavored. L-Lysine is an amino acid that inhibits replication of the herpes virus. You probably already know that. The vet can’t know for sure it’s a herpes infection, but it can’t hurt to try it. Hugs. So glad Tyler is still eating. That’s a great sign.

Your kitties do not go outside do they? I’m thinking of the deadly antifreeze. It tastes sweet and is deadly poison, as you probably already know. Sorry you are having so many problems. This happened to me last week (car problems).

Hi Suzanne, when it comes to meds or antibiotics I know nothing
Now I am starting to get pissed off at my vet and the vet owner who prescribed the famcyciclovir
I will be on the phone first thing Monday morning with them
I don't think he has a herpes infection at all. He's the only cat I have now

This is what In googled, the vet today said it would help with sneezing
Does lysine help sneezing cat?

Viralys contains L-Lysine, which has been shown to help manage the symptoms of upper respiratory infections including sneezing, squinting, watery or inflamed eyes, conjunctivitis, a runny nose and/or nasal congestion.

Lol you made me laugh
Tyler is still sneezing maybe a little less
Just ate a good amount of food
Who knows what this cat has
Ashley is a little bit better, it's just that the physician assistant from the pain management group is making her go to physical therapy to strengthen her arms and legs which only make her pain worse from the neck up.
Her ears, eyes, temples .
This guy just doesn't understand!!!!!!
She was supposed to go 3 times a week but has only gone once a week because one thing it made her worse
Second of all she has to wear a winter coat with the hood because the air conditioning in there will set the pain in her ears off, it's a strange disease and everyone has different things that will cause them pain

So when she gets home she's sweating like a pig and the only thing that might calm the pain down is a shower

That's another ordeal
So 2 days/ago he calls her up and said he called the place and knows she has not been going 3 times a week and if she doesn't start going she will be dropped as a patient.
He just doesn't want to listen to anything
She could care less about strengthening her muscles
With the way the FDC is , it's impossible to find a doctor to prescribe pain meds
Believe me I called around 7 already
So now she has to go Min, Tues and Thurs to PT
which will kill her
I just can't stand this guy
@Our Dolly Girl

Interesting that they suggested famcyciclovir - it’

I googled this med and found they use it for this
The onset of feline viral rhinotracheitis is marked by fever, frequent sneezing, inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis), inflammation of the lining of the nose (rhinitis), and often salivation. Excitement or movement may cause sneezing.
Famciclovir is an antiviral drug used in veterinary medicine predominantly to treat cats suffering from feline herpes virus and FHV (feline viral rhinotracheitis).

So I have no idea , I'm calling them on Monday

Is Ashley not getting any pain meds? That is crazy if that’s the case.

I’m not saying the famciclovir won’t help or isn’t appropriate. Many feline upper respiratory infections are caused by herpes virus. There are other viruses that are possible too.

Regarding herpes, it’s my understanding that cats can become infected with it and it remains in their system and can flare up and cause illness at a later time. They are “carriers” if you will. The virus remains in their nerve cells. Apparently, calicivirus and herpesvirus are the two major viruses that cause URIs in cats. The calicivirus is the letter “c” in the FVRCP vaccine that our cats get (sometimes called a distemper shot).

Hi Suzanne here's a dumb question , do you mean they can get it from the distemper shot. Both vets where I go never said he had a herpes infection.
I'm going to call them tomorrow and ask.
It just baffles me how did he catch something when he's an indoor cat.
Like I said the week before this infection he was vomiting for a day and a half , got rid of that, then 4 or 5 days later this happened. Thanks for the info :bighug::bighug:
@Suzanne & Darcy

I highly recommend getting a cold mist humidifier! When one of my cats got pneumonia I got that, a water fountain, and a little grass pad for dogs just so she could lay on it lol. I'll like the humidifier I got, I love it and use it for myself now!

The one I got is unavailable but this is similar!

Hi Katrina yes I have one and using it :bighug:

Well today Tyler's AMBG was 97. His ears and nose feel cooler . I would say less sneezing. It's not that he's stuffed up because when he sneezes it's very loose.
He still has to finish the antibiotic , I'll see how it goes and am going to call my vet tomorrow anyway. Still eating and drinking good.
