? 7/1 Scooter is sick - med ?

Hi all,
It’s been a while and Scooter has been doing great until last night. He threw up right before his +4 snack (2 hrs after his last snack), threw up just a bit of liquid during the night and again this morning. The only thing he’s eaten since he threw up last night is about a tbs of gravy food at +6 when I came home to take him to the vet. The vet did a full blood panel and said everything is good, that Scooter is very healthy. He did send off a sample to test his thyroid, but we won’t get that back until probably Monday. My question is about the medicine he sent with us. It’s transdermal mirtzapine. The vet said it’s an appetite stimulant. If I remember from reading others’ condos, it’s not good to give an appetite stimulant to a nauseous kitty. Am I remembering right? Scooter is doing all the nauseous things. Drinking lots of water, looks at food, licks his lips and walks off etc. I’m going to keep trying to find something my little man will eat. Will appreciate any advice.

The vet didn’t give any Cerenia? It’s an anti nausea med that’s good for vomiting too. You are right on the mirtazapine, good you got the transdermal as it’s gentler than the pills and less likely to cause side effects.

Sending feel better vines for Scooter. The Health Links forum has a post on tips for getting kitty to eat.

The vet said there are no anti-nausea med labeled for kitties. I ask him about Cerenia as I know many here use it. He said it’s only been tested with dogs???
Should I go ahead and try the Mirtzapine?
I will read the eating stickies, I’ve tried everything I have. He only took a couple licks. The feral kitties will have a good bedtime snack.

Your vet is a little out of date. You may want to give him/her the link to this paper https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/1098612x16631234
It is from the International Society of Feline Medicine, and gives guidelines on treating CKD cats. On page 231 starts the section on treating inappetance. Maropitant (Cerenia) is the first one mentioned on the dosing table on the following page. Cerenia used to be for dogs only, but was approved by the FDA for cats in 2012. Ondansetron is another good option, it tackles different nausea receptors from Cerenia, so sometimes is a better option. In some cases both are needed. Neko benefitted from being on both.

Thanks Wendy! I will print this and show him. Scooter has finally eaten a pretty good snack of freeze dried chicken. I’m hoping now that he has something in his tummy, he’ll start eating.

Jill --

I've been going through something similar with Gizmo. Labs were wonderful. He was nauseated and had diarrhea. The vet sent me home with a number of meds -- Cerenia and ondansetron, along with mirtazepine. My vet is a feline specialist. Cerenia is commonly used. The only concern is that if Scooter doesn't swallow it completely, it's bitter and he'll start drooling. I usually put the tablet in a capsule so it avoids the bitterness.

Thanks Sienna! He seems a bit perkier this morning. He ate a very small amount of gravy food, stole a couple of Toby’s kibbles and ate some more freeze dried chicken. I’m hoping with some food in his tummy it will settle and he’ll eat more. If he’s not eating better by lunch I’ll try and get some Cerenia from the vet.

If you have B12 capsules empty one of those and use it to give to Cerenia. (Cause we now B12 is safe to give kitties any residual won't hurt). I learned this after purchasing capsules and then emptying B12 in the container for easy measurement and threw all the empty caps :banghead::rolleyes:.

Sorry Scooter isn't feeling well. Maybe switch foods? Might be a bad batch? Is he throwing up food or just foam/liquid?

Thanks Lizzie! The food he ate before getting sick was from the same case he had been eating from for several days. so I don't think it was the food, but who knows. He hasn't thrown up since yesterday morning, but first it was food, then foam/lqd, I guess after his stomach was empty.
