Looks like Girlie is back in black; at least she's being consistent, though. If she's still in black at +4, would it be ok to stop testing til PMPS?

On the plus side (@Bron and Sheba): I couldn't believe it - she ate the raw chicken heart! Very surprised... Now I just have to get over my queasiness at cutting those up into tiny bits.

Civvie question: I've got another cat, Max, who decided to move in with us some years ago. He's currently in exile (although we do garden play dates and he occasionally comes back into our area for a little while) because a) initially Girlie was so sick post-hospital days/pneumonia/etc. and needed a lot of personal TLC; b) I'm monitoring everything that goes in and comes out - getting food in is still an issue as she's a grazer - and Max would complicate that; and c) Girlie finds him incredibly annoying (always has) and either smacks him (lightly) or nips him if he comes near so he'll go away. I'm not sure where to go with Max and all of this... Any thoughts? I'm sure I saw a Civvies thread, but I can't seem to find it...

They're both Velcro cats and want to be as close to me as possible all of the time, which is lovely, but in this situation, complicated. Girlie is happy as a clam that he's no longer in the room, but Max is feeling ignored. Sigh...

Hi there, sorry Girlie is in high numbers...she will come down...please keep testing for ketones if you are not already doing so. As for your Max, Girlie has to come first and he sounds like a needy boy--have you thought of maybe finding him a home with someone else or perhaps you know someone who could take him in for a while? Hugs, Kat and Gobbles

That's great Girlie liked the chicken hearts.
With the testing......when she is so high, there is no need to test hourly.
This is her 4 th cycle bouncing, so she will most likely start to come off the bounce sometime either in this cycle or the next two cycles.
So I would test at maybe +7 or 8 this cycle just to see if she is on the way down, otherwise I would leave it til PMPS. Then with the next two cycles if she is still high at preshot, I would get a +2 and if it is still as high, try a +6. If she has a lower +2 then she might be coming off the bounce so get a +3 just to check. Then if she is starting to drop, try and feed her high enough carbs to slow the drop.

Yes, isn't it great? For her - not for me! I don't know why those chicken hearts just do my head in... I do better with the pumpkin!
I'll give her little ears a rest, then; it doesn't seem like she's going to nose dive the way she did on 2 August.

I hope she does come down! All this time she's been negative for ketones, thank goodness, but I haven't been able to get a sample over the last couple of days. I'll get one today/tonight for sure.

Poor Max! He is a needy boy. He's more like a dog than a cat, actually: very big heart, very forgiving of any slight, always ready for love. Everybody at the vet's loves him because he will have back and forth conversations with you that are actually tonally appropriate. But life is making things complicated right now. The vet just said to let Max in and that it didn't matter if he ate Girlie's food: maybe it would encourage her to eat more in one go. That doesn't make much sense to me, really, as she's not food motivated (unlike Max) and if there's no food there, fine - she'll just sleep and do without. The vet wants me to let Max be back around her because she thinks that if Max is away and then present again, that will throw her BG levels out again as she'll be annoyed/stressed.

Honestly, I don't know what to do. Either way, he'll spend the majority of his time separate from us because of the food issue, and when I'm back at work, they'll have to be separate so I can leave enough and the right kind of food for her for the day. I don't know if either she or he would take to the Sureflap microchip-activated feeder; I've seen varying reviews of that. I wonder if anyone has tried that in situations like mine?

Max isn't the love of my life (as Girlie is) - and I feel awful saying that - but I feel responsible for him and wouldn't want any harm to come his way. Living in exile isn't making him happy, though. Sigh, sigh, sigh...

I seem to recall someone talking about one of those micro-chip activated feeders recently on here, just can't recall who it was. Maybe add that to you subject.

I am thinking that with Max, during the 2 hours prior to shot time when you take food away from Girlie, maybe have them together, and make it play time for Max and tire him out a bit. Having them seperated when your not home maybe ok, since he seems to want your time. I have to keep Marvin separate, cause of my dog during food time, so he is isolated alot, but he isn't a lap cat, he doesn't mind much, and will let me know when he wants attention :)

Problem is, Max ALWAYS wants attention! Girlie will be under the covers sleeping in the crook of my arm (her usual spot), and Max will come up and sit on her head in an effort to get as close to me as possible. Sigh!

I bought Max a DaBird out of guilt the other day: I was quite surprised that Max wasn't interested; I thought he'd go for it.

Jackson, come soon! :-)

Girlie is Hi PMPS and HI @+2. At least no ketones, but when will we get out of black?

I smelled her fur after I gave her her PM shot: no smell of insulin, so she got her shot...hmmm...

Since you are using the AlphaTrack2 meter I thought I'd throw some experience out there for you to consider as a possibility...

Early in our dance with diabetes we were using the AlphaTrack 2 meter and at one point we got some really really high black numbers and were so confused because our cat's behavior didn't go with those icky black numbers. When we put a new battery in the meter, the numbers weren't black any more. It may be worth a try ??

Like Jan, I started getting high numbers presumably when the battery started petering out on the AT2 (and the Freestyle Freedom Lite too) but before the battery icon showed a battery change was needed. Battery change fixed the problem. I always keep an extra battery or two in the test kit now!
