Yesterday's Happy Dance

Another long day. Cinco had his Dermatology appointment at UCD this morning. I was only 5 minutes late, which is really good for me, especially at that ungodly hour. It was quite an experience. There was one student that was "in charge", but when the vet came in, there was a whole group of students with her, and they had a lesson right there. Cinco was pretty good, only growling once or twice when he was being manhandled for the thousandth time. At one point I was holding him in my lap and he really wanted to get down. As we struggled, one of the students realized that the problem was he had to go poo - and did!

Three people jumped, grabbing towels, etc. and they caught it before it hit my dress (phew), then they cleaned him up and even deodorized him! He was much calmer after that. They took scrapings from his hotspots and looked at slides and the conclusion was that they aren't sure what it is.

They are going with the theory that it is either a bacterial infection, as there was some bacteria on one of the slides, or allergies. They are submitting one of the samples for a fungal culture, and that will take 2-4 weeks to get results. Meanwhile, we came home with an AB (Simplicef), and Revolution, which they want me to switch to from Advantage Multi, as they feel it kills the fleas more quickly (not that he had, or has ever had, any evidence of fleas, but just in case). I am also to give him Zyrtec daily, and bring him back in a month for a recheck. We talked about leaving the Cover Me off of him when I am around to monitor, to see if the meds are helping, so I'll start doing that after a couple of days on the meds. They also did not rule out a food allergy, but that was a ways down the list, to be explored later if current measures don't take care of it.

When we finally got home, I took him out of his carrier and put the outfit back on him, and he was really upset with me, struggling, and scratched my hand (from flailing around, not swatting at me). I got it on and left him alone for about 30 minutes and then fed and tested him (he was perfectly calm and normal). That's when I got that 101! Obviously, stress does not raise his BG!

Minka only ate about half her breakfast this morning at first, but finished it off within an hour. She asked for, and got a snack when I got home, and ate it all. She doesn't seem as eager as yesterday, but she is eating, so I'm pleased. Tomorrow is acupuncture.

Sasha's still got that summer appy, but she eventually cleans the plate, with a little FD salmon added. Harvey got a slow start but has been eating better as the day has gone on.

Another hot day, although not as bad as yesterday. The A/C and ceiling fans have been going non-stop. The Delta breeze, which will cool us off, has returned this evening (it was a HOT wind all day), so I hope to be able to open the windows and turn off the A/C soon. The kitties are all pretty lazy in this heat, although Cinco did go walkabout after his lunch, which caused Harvey some angst. I had to remain on guard the whole time, telling Harvey what a good boy he was and staying within arm's reach of one or the other. He didn't grown or hiss once, just made this little sound I can't really describe, which is usually a precursor to a growl. Cinco returned to his favorite spot unharmed and Harvey went back to this favorite chair in the living room. Crisis averted!

I picked up a copy of Cinco's B/W while I was at UCD and will get those numbers on his SS soon. Hope all are having a good Tuesday.

Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans. Extra vines for Michelle's Elsa and Jamye's Fred. :bighug: Prayers and vines to Amy's DF, Marje's DM, Chris' DM and Elise's DM.

How great to have the observant students there! Why do they always need to go when they get to the vet??? I need ht have Izzy checked ou, she has had realy dry flaky skin although her fur is fine. But she kepp scratching herself and then scratching off the scabs.

It has been unusually warm here too, not as hot as you though!

It sounds like Cinco's appointment went well overall. I hope the AB helps his hot spot heal. I'm glad Minka ate pretty good today. Sending appy vines for Sasha.

I was so pleased with myself (and him) because I put him in the lb before we left, and he peed. The other activity never occurred to me.

Oh, I forgot to mention that last night/this morning, after I cleaned up the wet pee pads and put the second litter box back, Cinco climbed into that smaller box and proceeded to pee over the side, all over the fresh pee pads. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Oh No!! There's a fungus among us?....LOL

Sounds like Cinco showed those students exactly how he felt about being used as a teaching dummy!!

Kind of disappointing that they couldn't give you an exact cause for the hotspots. In 2-4 weeks to grow a culture, he'll probably be cured anyway, but it'll be nice if they can come up with a definite diagnosis in case it happens again so you might have someplace to start

Good to hear Minka is still eating for you...even if some days are better than others, at least she's eating!!

Hey Cinco! I really scared mama good today! I swimmed way out among da sharks and didn't get ate! I haven't made up my mind about going for a swim tonight..I may just stay by the fire and roast me some weenies (since mama hasn't got me my food yet) ~ China

Wow, that was quite a day! I hope they can figure out what is causing Cinco's hot spots. Maybe a reaction to the hot weather??
Wishing you all a calm, happy evening.

Ella & Rusty

Yo Cinco, you take it easy tonight after your long day. Maybe a cooling dip in the lagoon later. Tess and China are on duty, and I'm always watching.

Poor Cinco, no wonder he was restless. Wanting to go to the LB with all those people there ........What a predicament for the poor fellow to be in. Good catch by the students! Hope the new treatments work.
I don't know how you do it all....you must be exhausted!:bighug:

What a day! I know people on Tanta's use Zurtec as an appetite stimulant. It will be interesting to see if it happens for Cinco.

I hope Cinco can get some relief from his hot spots. Wishing you and your kitties all the best.
Take Care, Peg and Toby

What an exhausting day for you both, but Cinco sounds none the worse for his visit and has soon settled down. Hope the new meds bring him some relief.

Thanks for the visits, Liz, Ann, Rhiannon, Carla, Chris, Ella, Bron, Elise, Peg and Suki.

Cinco does not appear to be in a hurry to get to the lagoon tonight. I don't mind - much - but it makes me start worrying about a failed reduction. I need a new pair of patience pants. I outgrew my old ones.

@tiffmaxee, I know he's had a bit of a summer appy lately, but I'm not sure Cinco needs an appy stimulant. I think he's close to being overweight, although the oncologists think he's perfect. I hope the Zyrtec just cures the itching. I'll be sure to let you know of any interesting side effects.

@Ella & Rusty & Stu(GA), good guess, but the weather was quite cool when the first hot spot appeared.

Minka ate all her dinner and just finished a snack. :)

OT: Update on the honeybees (forgot about those, didn't you?). The beekeeper finally took the trap away today. He had the queen and most of the bees. Those left behind will soon die, or hopefully, find a new home. We are still finding dead or dying bees in the house - vacuumed up 5 on Sunday and two today. I am sooo ready for this to be over!

The cooling Delta breezes have arrived. A/C is off and windows are open. :) I have a glass of wine in hand and am ready to relax. Got an hour until it's time for the kitties' meds.

Phew...what a day! Stress never bothers Trix's BG, either...in fact, it tends to send her down! I hope you're able to get to the bottom of the hot spot issue...it's frustrating when there are many possibilities and nothing pointing in any one specific direction.

Yay, Minka! Keep eating!!
