I'm just going to assume this is still part of her bounce. I shot the new dose (1.25 u) because I'm not going to be home to monitor and it's Blue's surgery day and I can't take any more drama today. It's stressful enough. Just finding a way to confine Blue this morning so I could feed Kasha was tough. He sooo doesn't understand why he doesn't get fed today.

Kasha ate nearly all her breakfast - nearly 2 Tbsp. I'll try more in a little while. Maybe I'll put her in the dog cage with some food - she seems to like hanging out in there.

Very, very worried about Blue. Worried I'll get a call saying they can't do the surgery because they find something on the tests they are doing pre-surgery. Worried that they'll do the surgery and it will be a horrendous, ugly mess when Blue tries to learn to walk on 3 legs.

I'm scared. Appreciate any good vibes anyone sends our way...

Prayers for Blue coming his and your way. When will you hear from the Doctor?

Krys and Blue, I'm sending positive thoughts and prayers your way. It's understandable you're scared. Let us know when you can about Blue as I'm sure you will, okay.

((((Krys)))) ((((Blue))))
I'm sending good thoughts for an easy, uneventful surgery and a very speedy recovery. Please update us when you can.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day

I will carry Blue in my thoughts all day. Many snowflakes for you Blue.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day

Sending lots of healing vines to Blue. I have an amputee kitty (hind leg) who gets around really well. I will be hoping Blue has an uncomplicated surgery and a quick recovery.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4!

I took some videos of Blue running through the house, up the stairs, etc. this morning. Wish I'd thought to vacuum first...

I dropped Blue off at the vet at 9:00. Talked to the surgeon first. He was going over aftercare info and mentioned Metacam. I flipped out, because I know that Latte (Carolyn) is a survivor of Metacam induced kidney failure. I mentioned that to the vet and he said the alternatives were an issue because ideally they could prescribe bupe, but they are having trouble getting it from the supplier. Now I'm freaking out about this too!

Anyway - they were going to do x-rays and labwork for Blue this AM and proceed with surgery in the afternoon if they didn't find anything bad. No news is good news, so I won't hear anything unless they find something and cancel surgery. Otherwise, the vet will call after surgery - not sure what time, they weren't sure.

I went to breakfast with my mom then...

Picked up some cat food (bought some Nature's Variety raw food to try, based on some recommendations here) and litter.

Came home and put stuff away. Saw that Kasha finished all the food I left out. Odd... That means she ate an entire can of FF this morning. Not normal for her. She eventually came out and I tested her at +6.4, hoping for blues, expecting pink or yellow... She was 55. 55!!! She was in the 300s when I left, I thought she'd stay relatively higher today... Nope. I have no idea how low she went, she's usually her lowest between +4 and +5.5, though occasionally later... Jeez... No rest for me, I guess... She just ate a bunch more MC/LC ...

I will definitely post here when I hear anything. Not that many people I know outside this forum will understand what we're going through...

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

I hope the surgery goes well and you hear a good report soon.

55! Fantastic!!!!

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

Yikes! Kasha clears her bounces super fast doesn't she! I see she only bounces for one cycle lately. She may need another dose reduction soon. Keep your eyes open for that.

I hope Blue's surgery is going as easy as possible. Take care ... it's a tough day for you I'm sure. (((Krys)))

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

My thoughts are with you and hope that all goes well for Blue.
You have a ton of positive thoughts and prayers backing you here, and I too hope you get the no news is good news.

Are they getting the bupe for you?

Thanks everyone.

I don't know if they are getting/have any bupe. I hope I made it clear that the Metacam makes me very uncomfortable. I may mention this again when I hear from the doc. Don't know what my other option is... He mentioned something else, but it might be pills. What form does bupe come in? I have no experience with any of this...

So far, it's nearly 3:00 pm and I haven't heard anything. No news is... no news. If he's in surgery, that's more worries too.. I'm so sick-to my-stomach worried...

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

Sending healing vines and positive thoughts your way for Blue (((((HUGS))) sounds like Kasha sure had quite a drop for you when you got home good to hear she is eating so well

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

Call them! Can you call and just get an update? Man, I'd be on the phone saying to them "I'll hold, now you go and get me some news!"

yes, I would pester them about the bupe and get them to get some and tell them how you don't like or want the metacam and what else do they have or can they get. Just keep after them.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease!
I have found that when I am annoying enough at the vet office I get what I want after being shuffled into a room so that I don't scare away the other clients. I demand the best for MY cats cuz they are the most important to me.

I'm pulling for Blue; we are all on blue's cheering squad. Sorry that's all I can do. Cheer and send my most positive thoughts.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

buprenex comes in liquid form. it can be given orally (absorbed through gums, try not to let kitty swallow) or through injection, if it comes in a sterile vial. or if compounded, it's given orally i think - no experience with compounded bupe here.

a fentanyl patch is an option too. i don't know if it would be overkill, but i'm guessing it's not inappropriate for an amputation. (i'm not an expert). do not get torbugesic or butorphanol, it's sedative properties are much stronger than its analgesic properties, so you could have a sedated kitty that is still in pain.

sending well wishes. hope you hear from vet soon.

eta: oh, and breathe :) there'll be discharge instructions when you pick him up, and you want to stay calm and take notes so you'll know what to do. ((hugs)))

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441 + Blue's surgery day, Kasha 55 @ +6.4

Aww, I'm just finding out that your poor little Blue is have surgery today. I will be thinking good thoughts and loads of cheers for your boy.

When Spot was sick, I got him the liquid bupe...it was compounded and I had to give it orally. It's supposed to go into the cheek area, not down the throat. Good luck on getting the meds you want.

And now,Kasha....whoa there!! The last time I saw Kasha she was in the reds and now look at her. Looks good! I hope she doesn't bounce to much for you.

Breathe and let us know how your boy is doing!

6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

Blue update:

He's in recovery, on fluids and pain meds. Surgery was routine - nothing out of the ordinary. Chest films and labwork looked ok too. They sent some tissue, bone and fluid from the lymph nodes for pathology, so when the vet gets those results he'll let me know.

I call tomorrow morning to find out when I should pick him up - probably later tomorrow.

Good news and bad news: They got me the bupe (prefilled oral syringes, I guess) for pain management after I take him home. Good. And oral antibiotic liquid as well. However, when I said the Metacam made me really nervous, the vet told me that they'd given him one shot/dose/whatever of Metacam prior to the surgery. So... not so good.

Well, that part's done. Can't change anything now...

Ok - back to work for another hour or so. *** Thank you everyone *** for your positive thoughts, prayers and energy - and keep on sending them!!! This is just the first step... A lot more recovery to go...

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

OK- so you are a member of the tripod community now. After the healing and adjustment Blue will supply you with lots of laughs and amazement. He will run up the stairs again, he will jump up on the bed again. It is almost miraculous to watch their quick progression - you wish peeps could do the same think.

I don't remember what we used for Merlot for pain after his amputation - but I know at first it was the Fentanyl patch that he came home on. And I do know what ever we used after that was not injectable.

Nice of Kasha to keep you occupied today

Also - don't rush the discharge from the hospital - if they want him an extra night - go for it. Those surgical sites aren't always pretty and usually aren't wrapped....

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

Whew, thank goodness for a nice update.

I screamed, yes screamed, at my vet office a while back when I found out that they had given something to Shadoe that I had specifically said do NOT give. I had told them to mark my file but they had not told the others. They won't be doing that anytime soon.

Ask the vet to mark your file with things NOT to do/give.

I bet you can hardly wait till your Blue is home where he belongs and I am sure Kasha will be happy too.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

I'm at tbp but am happy to hear that Blue's surgery - well, except for the pain killer thing cat(2)_steam - is going well.

I wonder about the codeine paste for the ears - like the one Tizon just had.

I'll be back later.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

I'm so glad the surgery went well! Things are looking good. Blue will be so happy once he's home with you and Kasha. He's a strong kitty.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

I've been thinking of you and Blue all day. So nice to hear his surgery went well.
I am praying for a quick recovery for him. I know he'll be his happy self soon with all the love and care you give.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

Sending healing vines and energies for Blue. I hope he recovers quickly. I'm sure you are totally stressed out, so be sure and take care of yourself too.

Re: 6/7 Kasha AMPS 441, 55 @ +6.4 ** Blue Update **

Just popping in to see how your Blue is doing and am really glad things went well, except for the meds they gave.

Will be sending continued vines for a quick heal!

Wow - a bounce. Who would have guessed?

Kasha is a little off. Not sure if it's from her bouncy day, not having Blue around (although I'd think she'd be happy - but then again, she may be thinking that everyone is disappearing lately...), her stressed-out mama bean or just not feeling well. She was doing the hairball rasp a little while ago, so maybe that's it. She didn't get out of her bed for a good 15 min or more when I got home today. I was beginning to wonder if she COULD get out of bed, when I noticed she was at her water bowl. Then she took a few steps and I was trying to determine if she seemed unsteady when she suddenly sat down on the floor and I started to feel panic. Then she saw my earbuds dangling out of my pocket from about 15 feet away and suddenly she moved very quickly to check them out. So... I don't know. It's just possible that I'm a bundle of nerves just looking for something else to go wrong.

Anyway - I figured she'd eaten a ton today so I'd have trouble getting her to eat dinner. And then she wouldn't come into the kitchen to eat... So, I was prepared for her to eat a light meal and then she went and ate 2 1/2 Tbsp of FF... or more. Pretty good meal for her...

I'm exhausted. Trying to convince myself to go for a stress-reducing walk (yesterday's walk ended with me caught in a downpour 10 minutes from my house!). Hoping for a quiet evening, cuz tomorrow is going to be another stress-fest for us, I think...

Thanks again to everyone for keeping us in your thoughts. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy toward all of you in a way that is normally only reserved for furry non-human species!

See if you can get some of the codeine transdermal gel to rub inside Blue's ear flaps for lesser pain after you have finished whatever the vet is giving you to take home for immediate pain. I was given the injectable bupe for the first few days for Shadoe and then I got some filled tubes of the gel to use once the main pains had lessened.

And yup, that is quite a bounce so I hope she comes around soon. I bet she misses Blue because I know Booboo runs to the door when I come home from the vet with Shadoe. She sniffs the case and checks Shadoe when she comes out of the case. They know and miss each other, so I am sure that both Kasha and Blue with both feel better as soon as Blue comes home.

I hope Blue continues to do well and comes home soon.

After abdominal surgery, the vet gave Gabby a Fentanyl patch. Other than sleepy, she did well with it. If they do give you a patch, Avon Skin So Soft will help you to remove it without taking off Blue's skin.

Easy on the dive there Kasha! I wish the express elevator was out of service and cat had to take the stairs once in a while!!!

Sending healing vines for Blue.

Happy to hear Blue did well with sx and you could ask about the patch's that Sienne talked about we have them where I work and we use them for hit by car patients and sx patients with a lot of pain we have other pain options too but I have no idea what they are but maybe your vet has the patch since they are easy to use might ask anyway wishing Blue the best for recovery :YMHUG: :YMHUG: cat_pet_icon

Hi Krys, Lots of healing vines being sent to Blue. We are relieved to hear that the surgery went well and hope Blue will be home with you and Kasha soon. You had quite a day. Try to get some relaxation this evening so that you will be ready to take on tomorrow. I hope Kasha's bounce clears soon. Thinking of you and your kitties.

Ella & Stu

Hi Krys,
First of all, I am so grateful you ALL made it through this day! I bet you are exhausted from worry and flurry. I do hope you can get some rest, in order to be prepared for tomorrow. Brave and loved...thats what I tell Latte is most important. Brave and loved is certainly what both you and Blue are! Dont ever forget it! I hope blue's recovery progresses in a positive direction and adjusts gracefully to the changes.

I apologize for not being able to get back to you. Phone calls are nearly impossible to receive at work, let alone doing more than glancing at posts/emails online. I agree with Gayle. When you do not want a medication used you need to state it clearly and ask for alternatives...naming the one you want. Live and learn. Thats how Latte and I did. Im glad there is an alternative for you to use for Blue. I certainly hope it helps. Your vet is correct about it being difficult to get the bupe. Everyone is having a problem...even human pharmacies. So, they have to get it compounded, which escalates the cost to a point where it is often not a viable option. I use injection, and was fortunate after spending A LOT of money on the first few batches, to get a large amount at low cost. Just happened to be at the right place at the right time when a shipment came in. Whew! Expect to pay A LOT of money, if you are getting bupe.

In regards to the metacam injection...if you look at my sig there is a link about metacam. The first page lists potential side effects to look for in case of an adverse reaction. These are things you will want to report to your vet anyway, considering what Blue just went through. But if you notice them, get a kidney panel done immediately. Dont shrug it off as just a possible side effect from something else. You want to be safe, rather than sorry. We shrugged it off for a week thinking latte was just constipated (thus the lack of appy, vomiting, and general icky feeling). I left her for a week and came home to a near dead cat. You know blue got the shot. You know what to look for. You know what to do if you see potential side effects. And, you know to say NO, if you are uncomfortable in the future.

Im really glad to see you noticed our sig (Im not sure everyone pays attention to people's sigs). And Im glad it made a difference for you and hopefully blue...at least in helping you make an informed decision on behalf of your cat. Whatever you had chosen would have been fine with me. its the not knowing, and not having the choice - like us- that I hope to prevent. I gave Latte a smooch and told her she helped another one today. Its the only time Ive heard her purr in a while. She knows.

Alrighty, get some rest. Everyone here is pulling for the three of you.
